3ACT Compass State TestingOAA:DSR:js:pp: : 10/7/2013Computer-AdaptiveUntimedNOT a Mandatory AssessmentSeniors May Test TWICE

COMPASS is a computer-adaptive UNTIMED assessment program that helps educators evaluate students' skill levels, place them in appropriate courses, and connect them to the support services they may need to achieve academic success.

COMPASS also has College Readiness Benchmarks in Reading, Writing and Mathematics that correlates to the ACT.

It is not a state mandated assessment. There is no legislation that requires COMPASS. It is an opportunity for Seniors who have not met CPE benchmarks in:Writing Skills (English), Mathematics, Reading.

4ACT Compass College PlacementOAA:DSR:js:pp: : 10/7/2013Course PlacementNOT College AdmissionsCOMPASS will not replace ACT as an admissions examExamples in Final COMPASS Guide Updated in September

Kentucky post-secondary institutions use COMPASS as a college placement exam. COMPASS is NOT a college admission test. Kentucky colleges and universities will not use COMPASS scores for replacement of the ACT to admit a student into their institutions. The COMPASS computer-adaptive college placement test helps colleges evaluate incoming students' skill level in Reading, Writing Skills (English) and Mathematics and place students in the appropriate level college course.Students may retake the ACT to meet the admissions requirements at individual colleges/universities. The students composite on the ACT qualifies them for college admission, not the COMPASS exam.

Please refer to page 3 of the Final COMPASS Guide Updated in September for student examples of when students would retake the ACT or use the COMPASS scores.

7ACT Compass BenchmarksOAA:DSR:js:pp: : 10/7/2013

In March 2011 the Council on Postsecondary Education met with the Kentucky Public Colleges and Universities to determine one Cut Point or Score that is acceptable by all of the institutions for each COMPASS test. Private institutions may have their own benchmarks.

The above Cut Points were set by KDE but will be revised to reflect CPEs Cut Point when it becomes available.8Postsecondary AccessOAA:DSR:js:pp: : 10/7/2013KCTCSUniversity of PikevilleWestern Kentucky UniversityEastern Kentucky UniversityKentucky State UniversityMorehead State UniversityMurray State UniversityUniversity of LouisvilleUniversity of KentuckyNorthern Kentucky University

These Postsecondary institutions have direct access to student scores

MOAs were signed by all these institutions to accept the COMPASS administration given at the local school district for placement. Each institution, including local KCTCS campuses, have representatives who have access to the scores. The MOA outlines that staff could only access students scores who had shown interest in the institution.

KDE has names of the individuals who have access to students scores. If your students have trouble at the local campus with their representatives cannot access scores, you may email [email protected] for assistance. 9ACT Compass Testing OAA:DSR:js:pp: : 10/7/2013Internet Based-no restrictionsUpload students at testing

Schools and districts are expected to help graduates or completers, which are all students with G-Codes, achieve College and Career Readiness. This expectation shows up in the accountability system in the College and Career Readiness Rate (C-C-R).

Multiple ways to demonstrate college readiness include the A-C-T (state or national), or the COMPASS and KYOTE placement exams. It is to the students benefit to take the state A-C-T administration since the A-C-T is the test used for college admission.

Note: K-D-E receives a file with Kentucky student data from Kentucky national administrations to include in the C-C-R-R.

Opportunities to Demonstrate ReadinessSchools provide opportunities for their graduates to demonstrate readinessThe assigned grade level shall determine the state tests to administer. 703 KAR 5:240 ACT Junior yearCOMPASS or KYOTE Senior yearCareer Measures Throughout high schoolCareer academic (ASVAB or WorkKeys)Career technical (KOSSA or Industry certificates)OAA:DSR:js:pp: : 10/7/2013

It is the schools responsibility to provide opportunities for their graduates to demonstrate readiness. Students who miss the A-C-T during their junior year (and have not met readiness on a national test) are given the opportunity to take the COMPASS or KYOTE in their Senior year. Career measures can be attained throughout students high school career.
