Regional Train Announcements in Germany 2014-09-24 Alstom to develop a new emission-

free passenger trains in Germany

• LOI to purchase 40 fuel cell-powered regional trains signed by 4 German States

• Commercial service on non-electrified regional lines in Germany by 2020

• Powertrain to combine hydrogen fuel cells, batteries and energy storage systems to replace diesel powerpack

2014-11-12: Fuel cell drives to replace diesel railcars – National Innovation Programme hits the rails

• 7.9 million euros, the Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) supporting the development of a new generation of rail vehicles with fuel cell drives from the company Alstom.

• First prototypes to go into test service operation by the end of 2016.

2015-05-27: Hydrogenics and Alstom Transport Sign Agreement to Develop and Commercialize Hydrogen-Powered Commuter Trains in Europe

• Valued at over €50 million, including the supply of at least 200 engine systems along with service and maintenance support over a 10 year period

2014-09-24 InnoTrans Fair, Berlin, GermanyAlstom President Henri Poupart-Lafarge and representatives of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg and the transport authority of Hesse (Rhine-Main)

The notification of funding approval is handed over.

Innovation Topic: Building synergies in FCH

between Automotive, Aerospace and Rail Systems

Conclusions:• Common fuel cell systems have been integrated in cars, buses, planes and trains in

early demonstrations

• Fuel cell stacks for cars do not meet the requirements for buses and neither meet the requirements for aircraft

• Fuel cells for trains can be based on fuel cells for buses, plus further optimization

• Fuel cell stacks for ground-based vehicles do not meet the requirements for aircraft

• Ultimately commercialized fuel cell power train systems for each sector– of course –will be purpose-designed and specifically highly optimized just as ICE’s today are

• Similar or same Fuel Cell sub-components and system architectures between auto, aero and rail power trains can be shared
