Commodore’s CornerI can’t believe it is already August. We are halfway through the summer series, and it seems that I just got my boat in the water a few weeks ago. Well, that’s because I did! The sound of the cicadas fills the air on these hot summer days, and always reminds us that the days of summer are beginning to wind down. We’re losing a little more daylight each week, and….Oh never mind. There’s no sense dwelling on the passing of time. We sailors know better than most how to seize the moment, so that’s what we will do.

We still have plenty of fun ahead. Bay Week is upon us, and the ACSA contingent is looking forward to another fun event with excellent participation from our club. We’ve got almost half of our Red Cup series still to go, along with the rest of the XX/XY,Women’s Regatta, and of course the Old Fox. Ladies, mark your calendars for August 15th and the Ladies Night sail, with the men of ACSA set to provide a first

class dining experience for your evening. Don’t miss out on it!!

Thanks to all those who helped out to make our recent Rock at the Docks/Fundraiser a smashing success!! It truly was a team effort with so many contributors, as is always the case. Thanks to the crew that organized the party and worked so hard during the eventto make sure everything ran smoothly. Thanks to all those who donated items for the silent auction, as well as those who bid on them. And certainly a big thanks goes to Jim Foreman and his band mates. “Midlife Crisis” really rocked the Pavilion and we look forward to hearing them play again soon.

Our next General Meeting will be on Monday, August 1st at the Pavilion.

What is that on the horizon?It looks like a party. No, it looks like a race.. Could it be a cook out ? It is all of them! Don’t forget Bay Week August 4-7, 2011. It’s organized by Bob Shepard and several ACSA volunteers. There is another event that is just around the corner and needs to be noted on your road trip calendar. It is the Newport International Boat Show. There are multiple waterfront facilities along America’s Cup Avenue hosting the show, including: Newport Yachting Center, Oldport Marine, Bannister’s Wharf and Bowen’s Wharfad. This is an in-the-water boat show with over 600 boats! The trip calendar for the Newport Boat Show is September 15-18, 2011.

Newport will be chockablock full of world-class racing events taking place during the Newport International Boat Show, so start planning your accommodations now. There are two BIG boats available for sailing and its cheaper than a hotel! WHOOA! The cost could range from $100.00 per night depending on the boat and the number of people we have going. This is cheap compared to the minimum cost of rooms in Newport at FROM $250.00/ night.

Also, for a fall away sail after our ramps are closed, we could return to Newport for the beautiful Columbus day weekend. There are some 42 ft boats available at only $2500 per week. If your’re friendly and have six people on a boat that would be only $70 a night per person. Again, I cannot begin to tell you how much there is to see and do in Newport - where the speed is measured in knots! Just take a look at www.gonewport.com.

For the BVI winter away sail, we have not set a specific date yet, however, we are planning to go either the third or fourth week in February. If you are even remotely interested in this trip, please contact me ASAP so we can select which week is best for all.

by Bob Sheppard, I-LYA Club Liason Thanks to Dick & Kittie Brown, Rose-Marie McCormick, Shannon Fisher and everyone else who helped make this year’s fund-raiser a success. With your support, we did well in starting the process of getting a sailor elected to the bridge of the Inter-Lake Yachting Association (I-LYA). Jim Foreman and his band entertained us with great oldies music for dancing and Karaoke, and bidding on the donated items for the silent auction was loads of fun. For those uninitiated, the I-LYA is an association of 147 Lake Erie and surrounding yacht clubs (ACSA, Buckeye Lake, Leatherlips and Hoover are all members) in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario, created for fun and to promote the sport of boating. Most of the clubs are power boat clubs, however, so sailors have not always been well-represted. Over the past several years with more involvement from sailors such as Heidi Backus Riddle, Steve Harris, Jamie Diamond and me, sailors are being recognized in the association and are sitting on more committees and boards. I’d very much like to be Commodore of the I-LYA and that process begins with being elected as Rear Commodore with the next election! So thanks to everyone for your monetary and personal support! I-LYA Senior Sail Regatta 2011

August 5-7 is the weekend for the Senior Sail Regatta at Put-In-Bay Village on South Bass Island, better known as Bay Week. Although the registration deadline will have passed by the time you read this, there will still be some social package tickets available on the island, so grab a ferry and come on over. There may be boats still looking for crew, so you might even catch a ride for the racing! The Deepwater Races from various ports around Lake Erie’s west basin leave for the Bay on Thursday (Cleveland on Wednesday), so check with area yacht clubs to see what might be available. Thursday night features Happy Hour at The Boardwalk on the wharf, followed by food and beverages at the Put-In-Bay Yacht Club. Friday night is the annual Rum Party at the Crew’s Nest Pavilion, and Saturday features a BBQ at the yacht club. Live music and dancing on Friday and Saturday will be provided by The Usual Suspects & Repeat Offenders who entertained us last year at Bay Week and at parties at Alum Creek and features Jim Martin, Carin’s father.
