ACPS’ Learning Through the TV Handbook

Welcome!  Use this handbook as your step-by-step guide to produce your 30 minute program for telecast on ACPS-TV as one of our ACPS-at-Home learning resources.

Read through this handbook to familiarize yourself with how to best translate the presentation that you’d give to your students in a classroom into a distance-learning tool that will engage your students and bring ACPS into their homes.

INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT

THANK YOU for volunteering to support this request!

In order to try and reach as many students as possible, we are looking for PreK-2 instructional videos approximately 30 minutes in length to broadcast on the ACPS TV. The videos can also be two or three videos combined in to one file, but the TV station needs the files to be about 30 minutes long each. Some ideas for videos:

1)K-2 Priority Standards-based: Link to K-5 Priority Standards document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1N3M6eM_99KviAjRd9TymIgdNlTXF9eD7eAir1Chu2k4/edit?usp=sharing 2) Read Aloud (with approved book, see below) 3) TCRWP focused lesson 4) Anything you feel is engaging, educational, and fun!

READ ALOUD GUIDELINES:

1. Please select one or more books to read from the approved list of publishers below. The story should fall into one of these age categories: PreK-K or Grades 1-2. When you click on the publisher's name below you will be redirected to the publisher's website. Please keep in mind many of these lists will contain hundreds of books. It is best to narrow down your search by filtering the book selection by age and/or grade. Scholastic ages 3-5 ages 6-8

◦ Houghton Mifflin/ Harcourt ◦ Crabtree ◦ Chronicle ◦ Penguin Random House ◦ Macmillian

Vendor Sites ◦ Flocabulary

If the publisher is not listed above, that publisher is not approved for ACPS TV. Only books from the publishers listed above may be included in your video. If you have several books at home already, you can find the publisher's name within the first two-three pages of the book. Once you have selected your book, please check HERE so that we can ensure your book hasn't already been chosen by another reader. You may also choose to select an eBook, such as the hundreds of free titles available from the Alexandria City Public Library or those from approved publishers on your Kindle or Nook app. 2. Once your book is approved, please plan out your lesson to maximize reading time and ensure your lesson goes as planned. We are asking for teachers to provide 30 minutes of content in order to fill in a 30 minute block of programming. You can read multiple stories or incorporate teaching concepts within your lesson to fill in the time. You are also able to combine two videos into one to reach the 30 minute time commitment. Feel free to use props, puppets, and/or other materials to enhance your stories and bring them to life!

Below are instructions for recording your read aloud using WeVideo. When your video is ready please share the link to your video using Google Drive and be sure to allow viewing rights for all ACPS email addresses under the 'share' function.

3. Your video is recorded and you are ready to submit! Please send your finished product to [email protected] for review. In the subject of your email please include the following:

Appropriate grade level for your story/Title of the Book(s)/ Publishing House

Tips for good video

• DO face your computer so the microphone can pick up your voice.

• DO look for nice lighting. Face a window or turn on a lamp. Avoid sitting with your back to a window or other light source so you're not backlit.

• DO look at the camera when presenting.

• DO keep a clutter free background.

• DO dress for the task at hand.

• DO silence your phone during recording.

• DO ensure others in your household refrain from downloading large files or streaming while you record.

• DO remember that sound will echo if there aren’t soft furnishings. The living room will sound much better than the garage or bathroom!

• DO prepare. Know your topic. Rehearse your key talking points.

• DO relax and be yourself.

• DO smile and have fun with this!

BEFORE YOU GET STARTED PLEASE READ:

1. We cannot use videos that have incorporated material from outside sources without the producer's permission in writing.  That means that music or videos produced by outside sources cannot be used and should not be recorded without verifiable authorization.   Although you may have purchased a song on Apple Music or through Amazon, that doesn't include rights to re-record that music, or for us to telecast the music.  The same applies to video clips that you find on YouTube or other places online.  There are a number of sources for music that may be used--WeVideo has musical selections that are easy to drop into your work, as well as some stock photos and video clips.  If you search for Creative Commons material to incorporate, you may find an array of material to incorporate into your own work with permission and acknowledgment.  If you have questions about what is ok to use and what isn't, please don't hesitate to contact us before you make your video, and we can help guide you through that part of your work.  Or, better yet, contact your school's music or art teachers about best sources (or ways to incorporate works created by their students!).

2.  If you are using your phone to record video for telecast, please make sure to turn your phone on its side and shoot using landscape format.  this will give you lots more room to work within the video frame!
