    TeamDenverwillcreateaone-pagewikionthetopicofEmotionalIntelligence.

    Need

    ThewikiwillbecreatedforAcmeTelecomCompany.Acmeisacompanyof100employeesthatreceives

    contractstocreateandsupportsmallpiecesofcodewithinlargercommunicationstechnologyproducts.

    Overthepastsixmonths,HRhasreceived40complaintsaboutpersonnelincidentsandbehaviors.The

    complaintsincludetheperceptionthatthereistoomuchgossipingamongstaff,disagreementsabout

    workbehaviors,cliques,andevenlunchstealing.TheHRdepartmentbelievesthatsomeofthese

    problemscouldbeaddressedamongtheemployeesthemselvesratherthanescalatedtoHR.

    HRbelievesthatthestaffwouldbenefitbylearningaboutEmotionalIntelligence(EI).Itishopedthat

    afterviewingashortonlinelessononEI,thatstaffwillstoptoconsidertheirreactionstosituationsand

    trytoresolvethembeforeescalatingthemtoHR.Becausethecontentisintroductory,allstaffwilltake

    thesameprogramregardlessofrole.

    Currentstaffwillberequiredtotaketheprogramwithinthreemonthsofdeployment.Iftheydonot

    taketheprogramwithinthistimeframe,itwillbenotedontheirnextperformancereview.Newstaff

    willtaketheprogramintheirfirstweekofemployment.

    TheprogramisintendedasPartIofathree-partprogram.PartIIwillbealivetrainingsessionandPart

    IIIwillbeanonlinefollow-up.Thesesessionswilldiffersomewhatbasedonstaffrole.Before

    implementingPartII,HRwillevaluatetheeffectivenessofPartItoseeiftheprogramwillbecontinued

    asplanned.

    EmotionalIntelligence(EI)isdefinedas"thesubsetofsocialintelligencethatinvolvestheabilityto

    monitorone'sownandothers'feelingsandemotions,todiscriminateamongthemandtousethis

    informationtoguideone'sthinkingandactions"(SaloveyandMayer1990).EIisimportantinthe

    workplacebecauseemployeesmustgetalongwitheachotherinorderforthebusinesstoachieve

    itsgoals.WhilesomeindividualshaveaninbornEI,othersarelessadeptbutcanstilllearnstrategies

    toemployit.

    ExamplesofEIincludecommunicatingwitheachother,discussingtopicsopenly,listeningtothe

    issuesthatareexpressedbyotherparties,beingabletoeffectivelymanageconflict,andinspiring

    eachothertooperateatahigherlevel(ExforsysInc,2009).

    Goal

    ThegoalofthelessonistointroducethelearnerstoEIandencouragethemtoapplyEIintheirdaily

    interactionswithotheremployees.

    Objectives
