Dear Parents,

I hope your family is enjoying a happy and mem-

orable summer. Once again, we are delighted to

have an active PTO to help launch the school

year. I am grateful for the many ways PTO mem-

bers help us during the summer to get our

building and materials ready.

I am pleased to be starting my eighth year as

principal of South Charlotte Middle School. It is

a privilege to lead this school known for its out-

standing family support, stellar student achieve-

ment, and great variety of student clubs. The

unofficial results of state testing show that 82

cial results in September, but the unofficial

results regarding proficiency and growth indi-

cate great work by teachers and students. Last

year we were designated an A+ school, and we

look forward to that designation again.

Enhancing our students’ literacy skills is our

academic initiative this school year. Strong

reading skills support every academic and elec-

tive domain. Please look throughout the school

year for literacy strategies we are practicing in

the classroom to increase comprehension,

We are pleased to welcome new staff members

to our Shocker team. Last year we lowered

studies and English for four years and will be

our new 7th grade social studies teacher. Her

SCMS PTO Dedicated to Supporting Students and Staff On behalf of the South Charlotte Middle School PTO, welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! We are

looking forward to another great year of working with parents, teachers, and staff to support our students

and the educational initiatives at South Charlotte by funding professional development opportunities for

teachers and staff, purchasing items that will enhance our students’ learning experiences, and providing

volunteer assistance throughout the year.

As we begin the school year, please give thoughtful consideration to how you will become involved at

South Charlotte. There are many opportunities to become an active participant in your child's education.

Be Informed: I encourage you to stay informed about events and activities throughout the year by reg-

ularly visiting the PTO website (scpto.wordpress.com), liking South Charlotte Middle School on

Facebook, and ensuring that your email address and phone number are current in PowerSchool so

you will receive our school’s weekly email newsletter, The Shockwave, and important phone mes-

sages.

Be Invested: First and foremost, please donate to our Annual Fund. Every single dollar raised goes

back into our classrooms. See the Annual Fund article on p. 3 to learn more about how every do-

nation can make a difference. In addition, we encourage you to link your Harris Teeter VIC Card

(#1933) and save your General Mills Box Tops. Funds from these two programs contribute around

$2,000 annually to South Charlotte.

Be Involved: Parent involvement is key to our school’s success. There are volunteer opportunities to fit

any schedule and interest, so please consider donating your time and talents. Please check the

volunteer sign-up form in the packet that will come home with your student the first day of school

to learn more about opportunities to get involved.

I look forward to working with you this year through the SCMS PTO. If you have any questions, sugges-

tions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you for your

support of South Charlotte Middle School and the PTO.

Sincerely,

Katharine Willis

PTO president

Barnes & Noble Arboretum.

Look for information in coming weeks regarding

Class Novel ordering opportunities.

Thanks to the generous support of more than 205 families, the annual fund raised over

$35,000 last school year. With these funds, SCMS purchased new technology for the re-

source and planning rooms, which included three 65” monitors and one LCD projec-

tor; new science equipment and supplies for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science classes; and

more than $4,000 worth of new books for our media center.

Your annual fund donations also provided professional development opportunities for our

staff, celebrated our wonderful teachers during Staff Appreciation Week, and provided

funding for materials for teacher classrooms. This year, our goal for the annual fund is

$35,000. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to your child’s school.

Thank you for supporting South Charlotte Middle School. If you have questions about the

annual fund, please contact Heather Collier, VP of fundraising, at [email protected].

Frequently Asked Questions

Continued on next page

Transportation

Q: How will parents know which bus their child needs to take to school?

A: Bus stickers will be sent home to every family in August. The sticker includes:

• Child’s name • Address • School assignment • AM/PM bus numbers • Stop location • Estimated pickup and delivery

times

Please have your child at the bus stop at least 10 minutes before pickup time.

Q: How can families request alter-native bus stops for their child?

A: CMS will provide transportation to alternative stop locations, including licensed daycares and/or a relative’s address, only if the stop is within the child’s attending school boundary. Parents may call the school office to determine if their alternative stop is within their school’s boundary. Forms to request an alternative stop are available at every school.

Q: If my child is late arriving home, how can I inquire if his/her bus is late?

A: Call (980) 343-3670 if your stu-dent’s bus is unusually late. Someone is in the office until 4:30 p.m. If we’ve been notified of a late bus, students will be given the opportunity to call you. Please remember the most effi-cient routes are generally deter-mined during the first two weeks of school.

Q: Should I drive my child to school during the first week?

A: Although bus transportation can be frustrating during the first several days of school, if you registered for a bus stop, your child needs to ride the bus. Otherwise, your stop might be eliminated for nonuse. Bus routes are refined during the first few weeks of school.

Q: If I routinely drive my child to school, what are appropriate arrival and pickup times?

A: Students are not allowed in the building before 8 a.m. School dis-misses at 3:30 p.m. Students can re-port to their homerooms beginning at 8:15 a.m. Students who are not in their seats and prepared for class by 8:30 a.m. are considered tardy. Par-ents are asked to be prompt in col-lecting their children in the after-noons.

Parents who do not routinely pick up their students within 30 minutes of the close of school (4 p.m.) or within 20 minutes of any school-sponsored activity are considered negligent. The administration will take appro-priate action, if necessary, regarding this issue.

Q: What is the procedure for the carpool line?

A: The carpool line is a two-car flow. Parents are requested to pull up to the crosswalk to let their children disembark. Students should NOT leave their cars and walk through waiting automobiles to get to the sidewalk.

Q: What if my child is not waiting for me on the sidewalk?

A: Carpool students and students who walk are dismissed before bus students. It is the student’s responsi-bility to go directly to their car. Cars without waiting students are asked to circle around to Strawberry Lane and rejoin the line until their child appears.

Q: I noticed that South Charlotte Middle School has an entrance and an exit. Can I sneak in the exit to wait for my child?

A: No. As stated, the carpool line is a two-car flow. Both lanes of the school exit are used for exiting vehi-cles.

Q: Where do I park when I visit or volunteer at the school?

A: Please use the parking spaces fac-ing the school cafeteria and parking spaces 24–31. ALL other spaces are for staff parking only. Overflow park-ing is in the grass near the bus lot.

Curriculum

Q: Where are the grade-level summer reading lists and school supply lists?

A: The lists can be found at http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/southcharlotteMS/Pages/Summer-Reading-Lists.aspx and http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/southcharlotteMS/Pages/SupplyList.aspx.

Back to School 2018 6

The Shocker

Frequently Asked Questions Q: Does my child really need a cal-culator?

A: Yes.

Q: Was the summer reading required?

A: There is one expected book for each grade level. Once school be-gins, students will participate in an activity based on their book. To prepare for grade-level language arts and social studies programs, students are encouraged to read two additional books from the list.

Q: Can I change my child’s schedule?

A: Scheduling is a very complex process. With nearly 1,000 stu-dents, it is impossible for every child to receive his or her first choices. However, class changes can be made during the first ten days of school for academic rea-sons. Change forms are available in the guidance office. All schedule changes must be approved by the assistant principal.

Q: How was my child placed in honors math and language arts?

A: The CMS rubric was used as a placement guide for all students.

Q: Is Physical Education (PE) required?

A: The State Board of Education requires all 6th, 7th, and 8th grad-ers to take one semester of PE per year.

Q: Where can I view homework assigned by my child’s teacher?

A: Every teacher has a website.

These websites include homework assignments.

Communication

Q: I understand that Principal Bailes sends out a weekly message to parents. When should we ex-pect to receive this message?

A: Mrs. Bailes sends The Shock-wave, a weekly newsletter, via email. It is also posted on the SCMS website, along with past editions. Mrs. Bailes encourages all families to read this newsletter, as her goal is to ensure parents are informed of South Charlotte "happenings" at all times.

Q: How do I sign up for The Shock-wave?

A: The Shockwave is sent each week to the email addresses of all parents on file in PowerSchool. Please ensure the email address in PowerSchool is the correct address. We do not print The Shockwave, but if you do not have Internet ac-cess, let the front office know and they will assist you.

Attendance

Q: When can I collect my child for early dismissal?

A: Students are required to bring a note from their parent notifying the school of the need for an early dis-missal. These notes are to be taken to the attendance office in the morning, and the student is given a dismissal pass. There are NO early

dismissals after the start of 4th block.

Students will be dismissed at class breaks. Dismissals during scheduled class time will not be allowed un-less it is an extreme emergency. Classroom interruptions affect classroom engagement and ulti-mately can negatively affect stu-dent performance. Please contact Mrs. Bailes if you have questions.

Dress Code and Book Bags

Q: Does South Charlotte Middle School have a dress code?

A: Yes. Information regarding the dress code will be sent to parents, and it will be posted on the SCMS website.

Q: Can my child carry a book bag to class?

A: Within the first 10 days of school, students will be issued book bags for the purpose of protecting the devices that will be issued (each student receives a Chromebook). The book bags will be distributed at the same time the devices are dis-tributed. Students will need a per-sonal book bag, which will remain in the student’s locker each day. There will be ample time to return to lockers to collect anything need-ed from the book bag throughout the day and to ensure the book bag may be retrieved at the end of the day.

EARLY DISMISSAL POLICY

7 Back to School 2018

The Shocker

All early dismissals must leave and return following the bell schedule. Please look for the 2018-

2019 bell schedule in The Shockwave weekly newsletter and on the SCMS website and refer to it

throughout the year. Students will also be given a copy on the first day of school.

Students must bring a note from their parent explaining the need for the early dismissal to the

attendance office in the morning. They will be issued a dismissal pass. There are NO early dismis-

sals after the start of 4th block. Classroom interruptions affect classroom engagement and can

negatively affect student performance.

Do you love the GoPlaySave coupon books with great offers from

your favorite Charlotte area stores, restaurants, and entertainment

venues? The South Charlotte Fine Arts Network (FAN) will be selling

these coupon books again this year pending final school approval.

The fundraiser is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of Septem-

ber 3. It’s a win-win for everyone! Parents and friends receive a fan-

tastic coupon book filled with savings, students are rewarded for sell-

ing the books with a party and prizes, and the SCMS fine arts pro-

gram, which includes art, band, chorus, dance, drama, and orches-

tra, benefits with needed funds to support and improve the pro-

grams. Last year’s fundraiser helped buy new stage lights and head-

sets, pay for competition fees, and fulfill wish lists for all fine arts

teachers! The GoPlaySave book pays for itself when used once or

twice, and half of the proceeds go to SCMS FAN. We hope your stu-

dents will participate and that you will support this important fundraiser.

Odyssey of the Mind is a competitive program that promotes divergent and critical

thinking. Every team consists of a maximum of seven students who must creatively

solve a given problem without any assistance outside of their teammates and present

their solution in the form of an eight-minute skit. Problem requirements range from

building vehicles and engineering mechanical devices to mastering classical literature,

art, and comedy methods. Team members also learn the art of improvisation and how

to respond spontaneously to random verbal questions and work together to solve

hands-on building problems.

Odyssey of the Mind tryouts will be held at South Charlotte during the first few weeks of school. Students

placed on a team will begin practices in late September and will compete at the Central Region competition in

March with a chance to advance to state finals in April and World Finals in May.

If you are interested in volunteering as a coach, if your child is interested in trying out for a team, or if you

have questions about Odyssey of the Mind, contact Nadine King at [email protected].

The SCMS PTO is excited to once again partner with Barnes & Noble for our 2018 Fall

Book Fair and purchasing of novels for students’ assigned reading! Information on your

student’s assigned reading list and how you can pre-order those books will be coming

home during the first few weeks of school. During our Book Fair week, students and their

families can shop in-store at The Arboretum loca-

tion or online. Our school benefits from all sales,

including books, games, gifts, and in-store cafe

purchases.

Booster Club Fosters School Spirit Participating in school sports can leave such a positive, lasting impression on our

children, fostering a sense of community, camaraderie, and school pride. Even if

your child does not play sports, cheering for their classmates and school is al-

ways a favorite of our students. South Charlotte’s Booster Club, a nonprofit vol-

unteer organization, was established to promote school spirit and provide much-

needed support to our student athletes and coaches. Thanks to the parent sup-

port during the past few years, the SCMS Booster Club has made stellar accom-

plishments, including new uniforms for all sports teams and some much-needed

training equipment. With your help, this year we will be able to do even more!

The extra support is paying off! Our 2017-2018 sports teams were the most suc-

cessful year in school history with some impressive seasons all around. South

Charlotte offers many school-sponsored sports teams available to 7th and 8th

graders and has several great club sport options available to all students in 6th

through 8th grades. These student-athletes need our support and the resources

to be as successful as possible, so please consider becoming a member of the

Booster Club. If you are interested in helping with the Booster Club or becoming

a corporate sponsor, please email Jennifer Martin at SCMSBooster-

[email protected]. As always, thank you for your consideration and your support!

Attention Parents of Rising 7th and 8th Graders:

Summer break is a great time for you to schedule a

physical examination for your child if they are inter-

ested in trying out for a sport during the 2018-

2019 school year. As part of CMS athletic eligibility

requirements, student athletes must receive a

medical examination by a duly licensed physician

every 395 days (1 year and 1 month).

Students must have a 2.0 grade point average

(GPA) to try out and participate in athletics. The

student’s previous semester GPA is used to deter-

mine eligibility. (Example: We will use the spring

semester GPA to determine eligibility for fall

sports.)

Fall Sports Season

Tryouts are Sept. 4-5. If needed, there will be a

third day of tryouts on Sept. 6.

PE UNIFORMS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE DURING OPEN HOUSE

(AUG. 24) AND THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE’S PHYSICAL EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT

South Charlotte Physical Education is a program that shapes positive attitudes toward

fitness, achievement, teamwork, and student responsibility. Maximum participation is ex-

pected, necessary, and revered as a foundation for fitness goals and the acquisition

of knowledge and skills.

Physical Education is REQUIRED for every student by the state of North Carolina. This

year, South Charlotte Middle School is providing mandatory PE uniforms. See p. 7 for

more information.

Students will need the mandatory PE uniform, which includes a grey short-sleeve, crew-

neck T-shirt and athletic shorts with the SCMS logo, running or athletic shoes, a small

CLEAR water bottle, and a one-subject spiral notebook. A combination lock is optional.

We will hit the ground running—literally. To give your child the best chance for success

in this challenging course, practice daily strength and conditioning. Staying active and

playing outside, as opposed to playing indoor video games, will allow your child to ex-

perience a bit of confidence on day one. We are a fitness-based program that gets re-

sults while focusing on student self-motivation, goal setting, pride, responsibility, adher-

ing to deadlines, and other real-world, applicable skills. Results are not achieved without

dedication and hard work. Inactivity and obesity have become an epidemic, and with

your support and a little hard work, we will return your children to you in better shape

than when they entered our class.

Physical education is your BEST health insurance!
