Automated Robots Could Transform Trucking

Industry Peers,

We are excited to announce the next iteration of the Autonomous Series. The Autonomous Trucks Las Vegas Summit will continue the conversations and discussions that were started this past November about the importance of autonomous driving for commercial vehicles.

Commercial vehicle companies are facing numerous unknown regulatory issues, technological advancements and, often, contradicting customer requirements. OEMs and Tier 1 companies are developing autonomous technology that will revolutionize the transportation industry for commercial vehicles, but one of the biggest challenges is convincing Fleet industry, that these technologies will effectively help their business. With autonomous technology safely implemented, the trucking industry will completely transform. With semi autonomous technology, drivers will have the opportunity to conduct administrative work during their drive, while staying safe from unforeseen circumstances. With fully autonomous vehicles, fleets won’t be restricted by human limitations.

Through the use of LiDAR, sensors and ADAS technologies, trucks will have the ability to detect an issue before a problem occurs, ultimately keeping the driver safe. In addition, new emerging technologies will increase fuel efficiency and decrease cost. The ultimate question is, how much will all of these technologies cost to implement and will the cost outweigh the benefits?

At the Autonomous Trucks Las Vegas Summit, on May 16th-18th, you will have the opportunity to connect with Fleets, OEM, Tier 1 companies and Solution Provider to determine the future of the commercial vehicle industry, and just how close we are to autonomous driving.

I look forward to meeting you in Las Vegas!

WORKSHOP A: An update on Latest Developments of Regulatory Framework and Standards for Commercial VehiclesWhat are the new regulations or are there regulations that are to come? How will these regulations restructure the commercial vehicle industry? Right now, there are a lot of unknowns in the system when it comes to State vs Federal regulations. During this workshop, hear from experts to understand how to address the regulations and state borders in terms of regulations.

Paul Enos CEO Nevada Trucking Association

10:45am-12:00pm

WORKSHOP B: In-depth Cost Benefit Analysis of Implementing Autonomous Technologies into Commercial Vehicles One of the biggest discussions surrounding autonomous vehicles is the cost of implementation. How much will this cost and will the benefits out way the cost of implementation? Join this workshop, to learn the different approaches that OEMs could be take when implementing and developing autonomous technology to commercial vehicles.

PANEL: How Has Autonomous Technology Affected the Regulatory ProcessReincorporating the ideas of “how to drive” is something that the Department of Motor Vehicles may have to rethink. When fully autonomous cars are in the market, will humans need to know how to drive a car? This panel will host members from the DMV in states that have been toying with laws addressing autonomous driving and will discuss the plans to implement these new ideas into the industry.

THE FLEET PERSPECTIVE: Full Autonomy vs Semi Autonomy: What Makes Better Commercial Sense For some fleet companies an autonomous car would increase driver productivity, fuel efficiency and lower expenses. The only debate is whether that vehicle should be fully automated or semi automated. Join this session to understand if fleet companies are truly investing in this technology and if so what they are looking for.

Functional Safety in Commercial Vehicles: Applying ISO 26262 to Commercial Trucks The ISO 26262 standard does not want to define technical solutions, but rather strives to preserve the ability for innovation and to enable competitive differentiation. What makes sense for products is not necessarily positive for the development processes and practices. During the session, you will learn the how to apply these same practices to the commercial truck industry.

“There’s so much focus on what’s going on in the passenger car side, especially with Google and maybe Apple, but there’s just as much interest on the truck side of things, and I didn’t want to miss it—because it’s not getting the kind of coverage that it should, and I knew that they would have something unique here.”

“It’s been enchanting. The adventure has been totally awesome. We need more of this—more communication. But we also need to understand where we’re at. We see a tremendous breakthrough in technology solutions, but we don’t see a lot of understanding as far as education. Is the academic world on par with all of these solutions? Who’s going to be able to service and maintain all of these solutions?”

“The event was very informative! It was great to have everyone out here, because it’s such a technical topic that we’re trying to do here. You see the cars doing it, but the truck is a much more challenging vehicle to control. It’s important to understand these challenges and work together on them, because in the end we’re all going to have advanced driver systems on our trucks.”

While integrating the technologies to assist drivers and automate driving functions in commercial vehicles, private industry and public infrastructure regulating bodies must cooperate to define the requirements of on- and off-vehicle technology. The technology incorporated on board must remain user friendly and showcase the benefits for the driver during a long drive without complicating the vehicle or adding prohibitively expensive infrastructure. During this session lead by Daimler, discussion will cover potential roadmaps and the impact to end users based on design decisions of industry and government

Achieved: Trucking ADAS, Safety & Comfort Conquering the Technology Hurdle – Steering ¾ Ton Trucks in North America MAGNASTEER™ with Torque Overlay (MTO) is in current, high-volume production and represents an industry-first innovation. MTO delivers much of the functionality found in advanced electric power steering systems through application of an electro-magnetic module operating within a conventional hydraulic steering environment. MTO overcomes a long-held technology hurdle of ¾ ton trucks – offering the capability to steer Class 6, 7 and 8. Now, drivers of bigger rigs can benefit from enhanced safety, comfort and ADAS features previously found only in lighter vehicles.

How Will The Sensor Technology Help Trucks Better

Understand the Road?Pot holes, “forks in the road” and unforeseen weather issues are not always seen by the human eye but that being said, sometimes sensor technologies are not as keen as the human eye. What commercial trucks need, are sensors that can accurately predict and understand the conditions of the road and react accordingly. This session will go over the technology that could help keep drivers and vehicles safe on those unpredictable highway roads.

Maintain Competitive Edge by Integrating the Technology That is Safe and EfficientIt is projected that within the next 20 years, there will be a large number of connected AV networks that will be on demand for mobility and fleet services. So how do you maintain the competitive edge that will eventually become chopping at your heals? During this closing keynote, you will learn the importance of not only ultimate desire to develop the autonomous technology but also to keep that technology safe and efficient for years to come.
