Active Learning

Active learning is “Anything that involves students in doing things and thinking, talking, discussing, making notes and presenting (PPT) about things they doing”. • Everyone is engaged in classroom. • A variety of activities and learning styles are used

such as a group work, peer assessing, discussions, problem-solving tasks, applying information, PPT presentations, small projects, case studies, role plays, structured learning groups, applying information etc.

• Students are engaged in higher order thinking-tasks (analysis, synthesis, evaluation etc).

• We put our focus on the first two years of Prep.

• All the resources used

are designed and developed by Oxford university.

• We use various “active learning” tools to engage students in each and every minute of their learning in the active leaning class (ALC).

Active Learning Class Steps : Prep

• In the active learning, each and every student comes to the blackboard to interact with teacher.

• After the text book is explained by the teacher through blackboard interaction, following steps follows:

the teacher shows relevant videos on computer with audio-visuals on the same topic.

Toys/cards/equipment are used for playing to learn.

A collective activity by all students is performed.

Thereafter the teacher uses workbook for learning through writing.

Then at the end and last step of learning procedure, the teacher gives worksheets for students. This is done by the students themselves and teacher correct and explains them if they have made any mistake.

Active Learning : Science kits

• For each topic in science and math we have a

working kit developed professionally.

• 200 kits for science and math for primary and secondary section.

The teachers begin the topic introduction with questions involving students in the topic. Then she explains the concept using the science

kit. Then students also perform on the kits. They check by themselves.

Then teachers ask some of the students to explain the concept orally.

Then students are asked to prepare note-of the concept they understood.

Then the teacher takes up the questions from the text book and gets the answer from students.

It also involves pairing and grouping of students to perform an activity or task.

Every unit in the text book is based on learning by doing.

Then teachers moves to activity book. For each unit in learner book (text book) there is are several activities in activity book like drawing, measuring, writing small answers, etc.

Students complete the activity while interacting with teacher in class room.

• Every student through his/her mini-laptop login at their khanacademy accounts online.

• High speed Wi-Fi connectivity in every room.

• They watch a video for 6 minutes on the topic.

• After watching video they have 6 objective questions based on concept to answer.

• They can go back and forth till their concept is clear and they are able to answer it correctly.

• In the next two level they have another set of questions with higher difficulty and application of concepts to solve problems.

• At the end of practice session a complete details of student’s performances is shared with the subject teacher with analysis and further planning.

• Skill Builder and Challenge. • In Cambridge Skill Builder there

are problems which student solve in the class room itself while interacting with teacher.

Each student have to complete nine projects on Science, Mathematic and English in a year from class III onwards. • Projects in science, math and English on each

• A course designed by Oxford University in English for the primary students.

• Students open the oxford Incredible English website.

• There is also a class book. • The class book has story in pictures and

same is displayed on the online. • So a student can see the picture and read

from the books, at the same time same picture has a video and audio clip online.

• The children read it from book and watch and listen from the website.

• This help in keeping up with the pronunciation and English ascent with the oxford standard.

• We train students to speak in the same way as in the audio.

• This helps them understand English, listen English in the right ascent and speak in the right ascent.

Active Learning : Comprehension

• Listening comprehension • It is for English and second language Arabic and Sanskrit • They are given a small audio clip and a question sheet • From their mini-laptop they will listen a small passage (audio

clip) through ear/head phone and will answer the question on the question sheet.

worksheet is given to student to solve. • Worksheets cover the broader area of subject and more like

Active Learning : Group discussions

• From Secondary 1 onwards, we organize group discussion under the supervision of our Principal herself.

• The purpose is to train them to discuss any topic confidently and with positive attitude of learning through discussions.

• These are conducted twice a week on various topic of general interest for the students on social issues.

• Students are divided into two groups and they are guided all along how to go ahead making sure that each and every students gets enough time and opportunity to speak and put up his/her point.
