Executive Summary
Proof of Innovation and Thought Leadership 2000- 2013
This document provides an overview of Thought Leadership contributions by Shubhadha Iyer (also
referred to as “Author”, “Consultant” or “Contributor”) from 2000 to 2013 in the field of IT,
Business and Management. In addition to general writing it concerns the Business Plans and White
Papers (and Books) prepared by the author, initially circulated among a few online and Investor
groups/Networks, then followed up with promotional Blogging and online Publishing.
The author sought opportunities for professional growth by publishing papers and articles online
- a strategy that many professionals follow these days for career and business advancement. It was
to raise awareness of ideas and concepts being written about, and initiate progressive efforts- such
as Consulting projects; Meetings and Discussions involving the author, with a view to developing
ideas considered feasible. While working to benefit organizations, the stated aim was to allow the
author to actively participate in similar initiatives in Industry and/or locate career opportunities in
domains of choice, at appropriate levels.
Date time stamps to indicate original dates and mode of publishing of books, eBooks,
documents and other communication are available in all cases and can be provided upon request.
Event Timelines are provided to give a clear view of chronological developments. This should serve
as proof of “first-in-line” Thought Leadership by the author. All documents were copyrighted.
Nature of Contributions and Impact
- A good Business Analyst can put two and two together no matter how far apart, to clearly
and logically arrive at four- bringing together different ideas and concepts to construct
logical patterns. Typically, gathering requirements from diverse work groups.
- A good Entrepreneur gets two and two together, to project a five! (Or more, depending on
how far ahead the projection is). Among other qualities, it requires good “showmanship”,
futuristic thinking, marketing and of course- original ideas and the ability to innovate.
- And let’s not forget the good Management Consultant- who can assess to determine what
type of solutions the project requires; whether the four, five or six is being arrived at
through optimized and cost-effective paths and how to manage these practices for the
organization. And an important question for these turbulent times- whether the work of
these people- analysts and entrepreneurs- is being given fair treatment and due credit, and
what can be done to improve these practices as well.
The following sections will explain how the Author/Consultant Shubhadha Iyer’s efforts worked
to create benefits at large, and at multiple levels.

The Industry Overview
Promotional activities have been undertaken from time to time by various entities in industry.
While there is a veritable information explosion now, when the author first started writing and
publishing on business topics at the turn of the century, it was much easier to see who’s done
what. It was easier to establish thought leadership!
Therefore, the author does feel confident in claiming a distinct head start in some areas. That
covers the product ideas and Business Plans prepared in 2000- 2002. Recent works prepared by her
have involved more abstract high level concepts in Management. A tougher challenge, but the
author has taken steps to clearly distinguish existing information from new ideas, to minimize
confusion from “information overload”.
In addition to preparing Business Plans and White Papers, promotional activities included
writing to networks and online groups; and blogging (The author’s Blog on Placement practices had
25000+ views in 2011-12). Following sections examine the type and scale of impact that resulted
from each of these contributions.

Table 2 Business Plans prepared by Shubhadha Iyer 2000-2002
Date Idea/ Initiative/ Business Plan initiated by Shubhadha Iyer 2000-2002
1 March 2002 PRIVATE UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE Product: --
A Business Plan titled “Private Unemployment Insurance” was first prepared in 2002 and sent to prospective investor groups, with copyright. After preparing this B-Plan in March 2002, the author filed a USPTO titled “Career Insurance” for the same product. In later years, the same B Plan was re-formatted as a Research/Feasibility Paper (same title) and published online. (In an effort to promote the author’s thought leadership).0
The above 2002 Plan/paper proposed a mid-tier Insurance product in the category of “Private Unemployment Insurance"-- aimed at providing funds and career resources for people facing between-job situations and other career contingencies. As a key differentiator, it would be offered through Private organizations (as stated in USPTO disc.)
2 September 2000 INDUSTRY EXPERTS Site:—The Business Plan (2002) proposed a type of web-based HR Information Management System that comprised of a database of Experts in finely segmented industry areas, with enhanced classification to showcase an Expert’s portfolio—termed Expert Information Management System (EIMS). This application would also have the infrastructure to quantify and exchange expert information over a web-based platform. In 2002, suggested the EIMS as an add-on to existing sites and portals.
3 September 2000
TROUBLESHOOTING and DIAGNOSTICS Tools and Methodologies: Proposed —an Expert Systems-based methodology and tool, for applications in Troubleshooting, Diagnostics and Internal Technical Support. It would work at Technical, Administrative and Operational levels. The novelty of this idea was in extending AI software to Business/IT troubleshooting, as distinct from the already existing applications in Engineering or Medical. A Business Plan was first prepared in 2000, circulated to prospective investor and entrepreneur networks then re-formatted as a White paper, both published online.
4 May-June 2002 OUTSOURCED ANALYSIS SERVICES: A Business Plan was prepared in 2002. This service aimed at taking up outsourced work from bigger projects, based on the concept of "Outsourced Analysis Services". The service category would specialize in taking over Analysis-intensive project tasks -- be it technical, business, systems analysis, etc. applying structured and efficient methodologies.

1. INDUSTRY EXPERTS Site:
Proposed a type of web-based HRIMS that comprised a database of Experts in finely segmented industry areas, with enhanced classification to showcase an Expert’s portfolio—termed an Expert Information Management System. This application would also have the infrastructure to quantify and exchange expert information over a web-based platform.
Expert Information Management System : a Web-based HRIMS for classification of Experts
September 2000
Over the past decade this design and concept has been incorporated in many websites and various online portals including a few Job Sites.
For example,

(Consultancy Development Centre)
2. OUTSOURCED ANALYSIS SERVICES:
Proposed a model, aimed at taking up outsourced project work from bigger projects, initiating the concept of "Outsourced Analysis Services" -- a service category that would specialize in taking over parts of a project cycle involving analytical work at various levels -- be it technical, business, systems analysis, etc. using structured and efficient methodologies.
Outsourced Analysis Services
May-June 2002 As envisioned in the original Plan- The practice of Business Analysis, and its Tools and applications have grown dramatically in the last decade, especially in the outsourced- offshore model.
3. NETWORK MARKETING:
This Plan discusses the merits of Network based Marketing, by offering Outsourced Analytical B2B services to a Community/ Network of Users.
Project Plan for XYZ Networks (Actual name(s) not disclosed)
2002 This project was not specifically taken up anywhere, but Network based Marketing is now a widely deployed strategy, primarily for online channels. Professional and Business networks also avail of it.
4. BUSINESS ANALYTICS:
Proposed a consulting project (in US) aimed at researching Business Analytic tools and applications available in the market, based on the increasing importance of Business Analysis tools and methodologies in the IT environment.
(Written as Part of the Plan for Outsourced Analysis Services)
2002 This project was not specifically taken up anywhere, but it drew attention to the importance of “Analytic Tools” that could be applied for Business Analysis as well as Analytics companies.

5. PRIVATE UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE Product:
Proposed a mid-tier Insurance product in the category of "Career Insurance" or "Private Unemployment Insurance"-- aimed at providing career resources for people facing between-job situations and other career contingencies.
Private Unemployment Insurance (Feasibility Study)
March 2002 Globally, State–run Unemployment Insurance (UI) is found in many countries including USA and Europe. In India, ESIC (Employee State Insurance Corporation) has previously been in existence for decades. While noting the many benefits provided by ESIC and other State-run models, the point to be noted is that- the model proposed in this paper, aimed to be different.
S.Iyer’s paper highlighted the benefits of UI offered through Private entities (in contrast to State-owned or Government). The core product idea was for “Private UI” but the paper also suggested that add-on benefits can be derived from “career/ placement networks” if developed further.
6. Tools and Methodologies-
TROUBLESHOOTING &DIAGNOSTICS:
An Expert Systems-based methodology for applications in the Troubleshooting and Internal Technical Support arena.
Product design brought together elements of Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), AI Software (Expert Systems) and applied it for Troubleshooting and Diagnostics for IT and Business environments.
Automated Trouble-shooting, Maintenance and Diagnostics for Technical Support- an Expert System Approach
September 2000
Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) is now a part of mainstream desktop software; and Troubleshooting Knowledge bases in IT support have been enhanced.
Following years saw a number of startups being recognized by Entrepreneurial and VC Networks in the field of AI software (2007-2008) and also Expert Systems.
Exact implementation of this tool or approach has not been observed in industry. The Consultant wanted to develop a Proof-of-Concept but this plan has been held up (so far) for lack of funding and Entrepreneur support.
The consultant has original ideas to develop this further, and the future plan is to take it up later, if possible.

7. JOB ROLES & CAREER MOVES
Business Analysis and DGM
Following the initial move in 1998-2000, Shubhadha Iyer worked as BA on various projects in India. Received a CSBA Certification in 2010.
In 2007, Shubhadha Iyer held a DGM (IT) position.
Career Moves as indicated by Events that took place in the given time frame
BA-January 1998 onwards
DGM- July 2007 onwards
IT MNCs launched many drives to hire, develop and promote Business Analysts, as observed from 2000-2012. Job requirements indicate that many were placed onsite.
Shubhadha Iyer progressed from Business Analyst to DGM mode in 2007 and worked successfully. However, in 2008 left to complete a PGDBA (92%) with the intent to resume Management positions thereafter. Also trained on cutting edge areas like Analytics, BI during this gap.
2008 onwards, job requirements for “DGM Business Analyst” started appearing online. Articles that prominently featured Lady DGMs from IT MNCs, increasingly appeared in Newspapers and magazines.
Shubhadha Iyer’s well-planned re-entry into Management was however, met with barriers and general inertia. Her move is still being unreasonably blocked. Since 2010- S. Iyer was forced to fall back on Business Analyst projects yet again for lack of other options, despite having far out grown this mode of work.
MANAGEMENT:
8. People Management practices
9. Entrepreneurship Services
Arguments and ideas are contained in the Books written in 2007 and 2013 on people management
People Management (2004- present)
Entrepreneurship (2002-2007)
There has been a surge in people management awareness (2004-2012)
S.Iyer forcefully advocated “small scale” and “people entrepreneurship” (2002-2007). These principles are aligned with Micro- Finance, an area that has seen many developments in the past decade.
There has been growth and standardization in services provided by Entrepreneurial Networks.

Trendsetting & Popularity
Shubhadha Iyer’s contributions involved visionary concepts and approaches. At one level, it had an
indirect impact as Trendsetters and Catalysts, raising Awareness and adoption of best practices. Some
of these views were absorbed into functional Improvement cycles. And at another level, there are
specific product ideas, originated by the same consultant.
The author’s efforts to popularize certain practices were always successful, often triggering other
initiatives and competitive events in the same arena.
Outlined in the document are trends that followed in the wake of White Papers and Plans
prepared by her. The author’s efforts paved the way for progressive trends in a number of areas
while lending impetus to growing trends. A distinct “Ripple effect” could be observed and these
are constructive effects that Industry widely benefited from.
Effects of the Author’s work have been analyzed in terms of- the Product or Service value,
Business impact, value in trend-setting, its impact in raising popularity and related factors. These
effects often reinforce each other, e.g. ideas formulated to raise the popularity of a concept or
idea, may also set a trend in that direction. So it is the overall effect and end results that should be
considered.
For example,
In the 1990’s Business Analysis (BA) existed mostly as domain-specific or financial functions.
While not disturbing this niche, starting 1998 the author undertook high-risk career moves
from IT to BA mode. In parallel, highlighted the value of Business Analysis per se, to
organizations. The years that followed saw a phenomenal growth in BA and IT-BA roles. Refer
the section Business Analysis- The Past Two Decades for further details.
HRIMS for Industry Expertise -The importance of registering and classifying Industry expertise
online, highlighted through a Business Plan in 2000. Similarly, in areas like Expert Systems (AI
Software) - the author wrote to raise awareness and popularity and also outlined a specific
product idea.
How these Trends were observed
- Analysis of News and Business Articles that concerned the same or closely related areas that
the author took initiatives in. These often involved organizational and industry events that
happened in the months after the author made some visible move or constructive effort.
- The progressive sequence of events is therefore relevant in estimating the precedence and
impact of an effort.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN THOUGHT LEADERSHIP November 2, 2013
November 2013 Prepared by Shubhadha Iyer 10
Raising Popularity of Progressive Ideas and practices in Industry
The author’s strongly expressed views on Entrepreneurship Services (2002- 2004) involved
emphasis on “small-scale ventures” and “people entrepreneurship”- this seems to have spotted
high-level Industry trends accurately as it was aligned with principles of Micro- Finance, another
area that witnessed growth in the past decade. Arguments were also forwarded for raising the
quality of services for aspiring Entrepreneurs.
Deputy General Manager (DGM) role –the more dramatic career moves made by the author,
were followed by a surge in popularity of the concerned Job Role! IT Business Analysis was an
example discussed above, DGM job roles is another. Since the author moved from Business
Analyst to DGM role in 2007, the popularity of this job role has increased since 2008 in India!
(Refer Table 3- Job Roles and Career Moves).
A Business Plan to take up Analytical services on an outsourced basis was prepared and widely
circulated from 2002 to 2004. In 2002, the focus was on outsourcing software development. But
in following years, this Plan would have added several dimensions of value to that initial
approach. The profit potential of the business model for outsourcing analysis services was
highlighted (The focus of the plan was not outsourcing which had already gathered speed by
then, but on Business Analysis as the author was a “BA Enthusiast”).
Improvement and Adoption Cycles
Apart from promoting ideas online, there is the matter of generating waves of awareness and
popularity around a Management, Business or Technology concept. This is a tougher challenge,
requiring a great deal of persistence and energy to cut through widespread inertia. Above all- it
requires the ability to foresee, and envision the benefits of improvement at an organization wide
and industry level.
Usually, it is the Corporate and Management authorities, well-resourced Entrepreneurs and
Networking circles- that are able to pull this off successfully. But of course, their rewards are
also high, in the form of adoption of these ideas in the mainstream.
In this regard, the Author has pulled off a remarkable feat by initiating similar efforts at the
helm, then single-handedly promoting these concepts. And these ideas have been absorbed
into improvement cycles in Industry, which means the impact was felt not just in one but many
companies.
There are high level areas such as People Management- that the author does not claim to have
originated. But forcefully argued the need to improve certain areas such as Decisions- generic
arguments, but as usual with high intellectual impact.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN THOUGHT LEADERSHIP November 2, 2013
November 2013 Prepared by Shubhadha Iyer 11
Improvement and Adoption Cycles (Cont’d)
Most far-reaching Management practices and paradigms go through cycles that involve not one but
several waves of adoption, sometimes spanning decades. Lean Management, Six Sigma, even Flat
structures are prominent examples.
People Management may have had similar waves generated since inception. In this context, the
author played an important role in a resurgent wave that happened in the concerned time
frame 2003- 2012. Read the People Management section on how this evolved.
The author’s contributions often worked at multiple levels. For example, People Management
involved waves of awareness as the author wrote extensively on the need for Decisions, and
other people management principles. All of which led to a greater strategic focus in these areas.
New Management ideas were also originated. For the past 5-7 years, the author has desisted
from publishing entire (new) documents online. But the latest Book on People Management
contains her original copyrighted ideas; as well as general discussions on established theories.
Optimal Timelines
Initiatives in IT Business Analysis, Outsourced Analysis, Expert Channel – were provided “just in
time” for the IT/ Outsourcing boom, and Web-based revolution to derive maximum value from.
Private Unemployment Insurance anticipated the need for Job and Career Services well in
advance, and its potential as a viable model to be offered through private organizations which
was its unique differentiator. Read “Private Unemployment Insurance” below.
Private Unemployment Insurance (UI)
The author prepared a business plan and paper on “Private Unemployment Insurance” (2002).
Shubhadha Iyer was among the “first movers” who proposed Private Unemployment Insurance
in March 2002, while in US.

Business Analysis- The Past Two Decades
In recent years, the Business Analyst role has grown and diversified dramatically. But it was during
the 1990’s IT boom that a few intrepid IT Analysts ventured into BA space (notably, Shubhadha
Iyer) and worked to add Analysis-intensive skills on IT projects. Propelled by such cross-functional
movements in the US jobs market, these trends later gathered momentum.
What we have at the turn of the century is-- the immense benefits of business analysis on IT
projects had been pointed out to industry. Companies started hiring for “BA skills” in large
numbers, on IT outsourcing projects. Business Analysts- whether Functional or Techno-
functional, have since expanded their presence in many industries.
The extent of specialization within this role has increased, with differentiation between Domain
Specialists and Generalists. And then there are versatile, multi-skilled Analysts – like the Author,
who can do both and work across verticals. In another interesting trend, growing fields such as
Analytics have been quick to absorb Business Analysts.
People Management
The author started writing for the need to improve decisions related to people practices, in 2004-
and argued for improvements in decision making, team management, placement and even people
management practices in Entrepreneurship.
These ideas were later assembled in an E-book published in 2007-2008. A unique experimental
style set this book apart, as content was in Email or online communication format (Chat, Phone
conversations- entirely fictional). It was not marketed widely and sold but a few copies; later
removed by the author who felt that her ideas in People Management deserved a more
specialized treatment. Initial views and ideas from 2004 onwards can be found in this book
(2007).
The same vision and principles were later developed into focused solutions for the book “Ideas
in People Management (2013)” with a wealth of new ideas added.
Ideas were initially in the form of generically stated arguments. Based on logical thinking, best
practices and Management principles, but- admittedly, some of it may have resembled
powerful exhortations- and that seems to have increased the impact!
In following years, the author noticed the same people management ideas echoed in
Newspapers, Business Articles and Forums. Once again, the strongly expressed views created a
“viral buzz” and reverberated across the corporate world.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN THOUGHT LEADERSHIP November 2, 2013

Business Plans prepared by the Analyst
Refer Business Plans prepared by Shubhadha Iyer 2000-2002 listing the prominent early-stage business
ideas. The Analyst was not in a position to take these Plans forward. Nevertheless, it should
demonstrate the strategic value of each idea, along with the thought leadership and aptitude to
spot futuristic trends with high profit potential. It can be inferred that in general, ideas and views
forwarded by the Analyst have a high probability of succeeding, if allowed to develop within the
opportunity time limit.
This Analyst does not like to “rest on past laurels”. Evolving new ideas and solutions will
continue to be the key driver, though in certain cases it was necessary to analyze trends. While
doing so it is observed that some of the identified opportunity areas- outsourced analysis,
network-based marketing, and expert databases have been saturated; but there are a few others
that still retain the space for further development!
Product and Service Ideas
The above mentioned list of B Plans is a snapshot of product and service ideas. As discussed,
Private Unemployment Insurance- was a product idea that drew worldwide attention.
Fault Tree Analysis and Troubleshooting knowledgebase were popularized. Exact Product design
and solution refinements that the author had in mind was however, never published. The author
has been working on these solutions independently and might be in a position to develop to
completion, once her next in line career goals are achieved.
Summary
In retrospect, the contributor accomplished the following through distinctive works of Thought
Leadership —
Wrote extensively on ideas and concepts that led to waves of awareness, popularity and
adoption in Industry.
Popularized methods and tools that are now industry standard
Played an important part in initiating Improvement Cycles in certain areas.
Acted as a catalyst for change, growth and innovation
Supported the introduction and absorption of best practices in a given area
