1. God’s people, Israel, fought many battles and won them. After Israel overcame the city of Jericho, they were ready to fight with another city called Ai.
2. God had promised his people that they would win battles if they obeyed him. So when it came time to fight against the city of Ai Joshua decided he didn’t need to send all of his soldiers. He only sent 3,000 soldiers to fight with Ai.
3. But something very surprising happened. Instead of winning like usual, the Israelites were defeated by Ai’s army. They ran back to their camp.
4. Thirty-six soldiers were killed and they lost their courage and were afraid. Joshua cried out to God. How could this have happened? Didn’t God promise that the Israelites would win battles if they obeyed him?
5. But Joshua only THOUGHT everyone was obeying God. God told him that there was sin among the Israelites. Someone had done something wrong and was trying to keep it a secret. After the battles no one was supposed to keep any of the treasures for themselves. But someone had disobeyed God and hidden the treasures in a secret place where no one would see them. This person thought no one would ever know their secret. This person even though GOD would never know their secret.
6. God told Joshua to have all the people of Israel to walk before him. God would tell Joshua who was keeping the secret.
7. When everyone walked by the tribe of Judah was chosen. Then the tribe of Judah walked by and only the family of Zimri was chosen. Then out of the family of Zimri the guilty person’s name was called. The man who thought he could keep a secret from God was named Achan.
8. Finally, Achan confessed that after the battle of Jericho he had decided to keep some of the treasure for himself. He had stolen a robe, some silver and some gold. He thought no one would know about it if he hid those things under his tent.
9. Achan and his family were stoned. Their bodies and properties were burned.
10.After that, Israel went to fight with Ai again. This time they won.
