What is OSA?– Sleep apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition, characterized by

repeated cessation of breathing while sleeping, due mostly to complete or partial pharyngeal obstruction

Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Basics

Snoring Lack of energy

Large neck Excessive daytime sleepiness

Nighttime gasping, choking, or coughing Obesity

Morning headaches Irregular breathing during sleep

Hypertension Depression

Gastroesophageal reflux Frequent nocturnal urination

Due to the widespread under-recognition of OSA, its prevalence is estimated to be as high as 43 million and thought to be equivalent to adult diabetes

Up to 93% of women and 82% of men with moderate to severe OSA have not been diagnosed and, therefore, are not receiving treatment

According to one US survey:

OSA Disease Landscape

  OSA Prevalence by Age

Age 20-44 years 45-64 years 61-100 years

Men 3.2% 11.3% 18.1%

Women 0.6% 2.0% 7.0%

OSA Related to Chronic Diseases

OSA is present in…

83% of patients

with hypertension*

77% of patients

with obesity

49% of patients with atrial fibrillation

48% of patients with type II diabetes

30% of patients with CVD

In addition:– 65% of stroke patients have sleep-disordered breathing†

– Severe sleep apnea increases the risk of death by 46%

† OSA is the most common form of sleep-disordered breathing.

It is important to screen your at-risk patients for OSA

*Drug-resistant.

How Is OSA Diagnosed?

1. Screen your at-risk patients for OSA by using the 8-question STOP-BANG Questionnaire (ask your Territory Manager for screeners).

2. For patients who answer “Yes” to 3 or more questions, an OSA diagnostic test should be prescribed.

3. Patients can choose to visit either a sleep-lab for an overnight diagnostic test or they can be prescribed an at-home diagnostic test.

Home diagnostic sleep tests are more convenient and cost-effective for patients, allowing them to stay at home and sleep in their own bed

What Happens Post-Diagnosis?

If you have a preferred durable medical equipment, a copy will be sent if specified on the order form

Therapy options should be determined based on test results, pre-existing medical conditions, payer requirements, and patient preference

Auto-titrating Positive Airway Pressure (APAP or Auto-CPAP) is an easy treatment to prescribe

• Automatically decreases or increases the air pressure as needed

• No in-lab titration studies required before initiating therapy

• Therapy may be more comfortable and easier to use

10

The American College of Physicians Guidelines validates that APAP therapy is as effective as CPAP therapy

Page 11: AccuSom At Home_Overview 5.5.15

HomePAP Study* Confirms HST+APAP Protocol

A randomized, multicenter clinical trial proved that home-based diagnosis followed by APAP therapy was as effective as in-lab PSG and CPAP titration in terms of acceptance, adherence, time to treatment, and functional improvements*

Key findings:– PAP was used 1 hour greater in

the home setting versus the sleep lab

– Adherence was 12.6% higher in the home versus the sleep lab
