Executive Summary

During the 48 months of the project (between February 2014 and end of January 2018), many dissemination and outreach activities were performed. This report presents the final dissemination and outreach activities report, including the dissemination at conferences, workshops, software user's meetings, courses, dissemination in journals, outreach activities through direct communication channels and mass media. Papers from conferences, workshops or journals are included at the end of the report.

1 Introduction

The ACCUSIM project aims to identify, develop and apply accurate, high-fidelity CFD approaches for

the numerical predictions of the unsteady, turbulent and possibly cavitating flow in hydraulic

turbines, pumps and marine propellers, and to develop advanced shape and functional optimization

strategies for the best design of these systems.

During the 48 months of the project (between February 2014 and end of January 2018), many dissemination and outreach activities were performed. This report presents the final dissemination report, including the dissemination at conferences, workshops, software user's meetings, courses, dissemination in journals, dissemination through other direct communication channels and dissemination in mass media. Papers from conferences, workshops or journals are included at the end of the report. 3 Short description of events

3.1 Conference ‘Kuhljevi Dnevi’ (Kuhelj’s Days) – month M8

In September 2014 (24-25/9/2014) a national annual conference 'Kuhljevi dnevi' was organized in

Maribor (Slovenia). The conference aims to disseminate state-of-the-art research from the field of

mechanical engineering and to promote the discussions to Slovenian researchers, students and

representatives of companies. The conference is held in memoriam to prof. Kuhelj and the official

conference language is Slovenian.

Researcher R4 (from UNITS), who was performing secondment at TI, was getting familiar with

numerical simulations of axial turbines. He attended the conference by presenting numerical

simulations of axial turbines to a Slovenian public. The study ‘Efficiency Prediction for a Low Head

Bulb Turbine with Numerical Flow Analysis’ was performed in collaboration by other researchers

from TI. The paper presented results obtained by different turbulence models and an effect of grid

density on results.

The activity can be classified into work packages WP1 and WP2, more specifically into tasks T.1.1.

(Usage of Open-Source CFD Software), T.2.2. (CFD Simulation of a Kaplan Turbine with Advanced

Turbulence Models).

3.2 Francis-99 Workshop – month M11

In December 2014 the first (of three) Francis-99 workshop was jointly organized by the Norwegian

University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Luleå University of Technology (LTU) from Sweden.

The goal of the first workshop was to determine the state of the art of high head Francis turbine

simulations (flow and structure) under steady operating conditions, as well as to promote

development of such simulations openly.

Both partners of the ACCUSIM project published and presented a paper in which simulations

performed with commercial software ANSYS CFX and with open-source software OpenFOAM were

compared to experimental measurements. One of the conclusions was that results drastically

improved by using our own computational meshes instead of the ones provided by organizers of the

conference. In particular, the provided meshes were insufficiently refined near the blades. Two

researchers attended the conference, R1 and R4, so they could exchange their experiences on

different topics. The study by the team of the ACCUSIM project was one of the most comprehensive

studies presented at the workshop.

The activities can be classified into work packages WP1 and WP2. Due to an interaction among

researchers there was a transfer of knowledge in both directions. Researchers from TI were learning

about the usage of OpenFOAM software (Task T.1.1 - Usage of Open-Source CFD Software).

Researcher R4 is learning about simulations of Francis turbines (Task T.2.1 - CFD Simulation of a

Francis Turbine with Advanced Turbulence Models).

3.3 Presentation at TI's Board of researchers by researcher R4 (Mitja Morgut) -

month M12

On 9th January 2015 researcher R4 presented his research to the Board of researchers of

Turboinštitut. The title of the presentation was 'Research project ACCUSIM from origin to

realization'. In the presentation he showed his research work on cavitation modelling, with emphasis

on the usage of genetic optimization algorithm and open source solver OpenFOAM.

The activity can be classified into work packages WP1 (Transfer of knowledge to TI) as well as the

WP5 (Dissemination, Outreach Activities and Exploitation).

3.4 Seminar at UniTS by researcher R2 (Dragica Jošt) – month M15

On 16/04/2015 researcher R2 (Dragica Jošt) presented her research work to MSc and Ph.D. students,

as well as faculty members, of the Dept. of Architecture and Engineering of the University of Trieste

(a signed list of attendees is available upon request). The title of the presentation was 'Numerical

flow simulation and performance prediction for water turbines'. In the presentation she showed her

research work related to all types of water turbines, as well as a historical overview of such

simulations. The presentation was particularly appreciated, for its clarity and innovative nature of the

methods used, by both students and faculty.

WP5 (Dissemination, Outreach Activities and Exploitation).

3.5 Tutorial for students at UniTS by researcher R1 (Aljaž Škerlavaj) – month M16

On 25/05/2015 researcher R1 (Aljaž Škerlavaj) presented a 3-hours tutorial to the students of CFD

course (Termofluidodinamica Computazionale) of MSc in Mechanical Engineering. The title of the

presentation was "CFD simulation of a simple centrifugal pump". The goal was to teach the students

how to perform such non-trivial simulations. The students followed the course by working on their

computers in a computerized classroom. The tutorial was attended with enthusiasm and genuine

participation by the students, since they not only had the chance to attend - and work hands-on - on

this tutorial, but also had the opportunity to take advantage of the competence and experience of

the teacher in the simulation of turbomachines. The tutorial is available for students at the webpage

moodle2.units.it.

3.6 ANSYS conferences – months M15 and M16

The state-of-the-art simulations and recent findings were presented at three regional conferences of

the software provider ANSYS: in Austria, Italy and Slovenia. People from different technical branches

attend such conferences, so it was a good chance to present the ACCUSIM project to wider audience

and for networking. The following presentations were given:

3.7 Fourth International Symposium on Marine Propulsors, smp’15 – M16

In May/June 2015 (31/05/2015–04/06/2015) the fourth International Symposium on Marine

Propulsors was organized (http://www.caee.utexas.edu/smp15/). The symposium is dedicated to

marine propulsors and ocean current or tidal turbines. At the last day of the symposium a workshop

on cavitating propeller performance was held, with emphasis on comparison of numerical

simulations of propeller cavitation and propeller induced hull pressures to experiments (a blind test

case).

Researchers R1 and R2 (from TI) were getting familiar with state-of-the-art research of cavitation on

marine propellers and with OpenFOAM solver, whereas researcher R4 improved his knowledge

regarding the advanced turbulence models. Two papers were submitted:

- "Numerical investigations of a cavitating propeller in non-uniform inflow" and

- "Numerical predictions of the PPTC model propeller in oblique flow"

The results were obtained by different turbulence models, with two different solvers (ANSYS CFX and

OpenFOAM) and three mass transfer models. Computationally intensive numerical simulations were

performed. The ACCUSIM's qualitative predictions results of the blind test case were almost perfect,

and among the best of the participating groups.

The activities can be classified into work packages WP1, WP2 and WP3. There was a transfer of

knowledge to researchers from TI (task T.1.1. Usage of Open-Source CFD Software and task T.1.2.

Cavitation Modelling), as well as transfer of knowledge to researcher from UniTS (task T.2.1. CFD

Simulation of a Francis Turbine with Advanced Turbulence Models). Regarding testing the initial

cavitation extent with the optimized cavitation model, this task is related with T.3.1. Initial Cavitation

in Hydro-Machinery – Calibration of Cavitation Model for RANS Simulations. The evaluation of the

effect of advanced turbulence models on prediction with cavitation model is related to task T.3.2.

Efficiency and Cavitation Prediction in Hydraulic Machinery (Simulations with Advanced Turbulence

Models).

3.8 NAFEMS World Congress 2015 – month M17

In June 2015 (21-24/06/2015) a NAFEMS World Congress 2015 was organized in San Diego, CA. The

congress is a general (non-specialized) conference for numerical simulation and CAE (computer Aided

Engineering), with the purpose to exchange experience between different branches of engineering. It

is particularly focused upon industrial applications.

At the NAFEMS congress we presented the main results of the simulations of bulb water turbine.

More specifically, a research with two CFD solvers (ANSYS CFX and OpenFOAM) was performed, with

two approaches for turbulence modelling. The first approach was a steady-state simulation

approach, the second one a time consuming approach with advanced turbulence models (with

transient simulations). In the latter case, the effect of grid refinement of various turbine parts on

turbine efficiency, torque and mass flow rate was studied. Numerical results were compared to

experimental results.

The activities can be classified into work packages WP1 and WP2. There was a transfer of knowledge

to researchers from TI (T.1.1. Usage of Open-Source CFD Software), as well as transfer of knowledge

to a researcher from UniTS (T.2.2. CFD Simulation of a Kaplan Turbine with Advanced Turbulence

Models).

3.9 33rd UIT Heat Transfer Conference – month M18

In June 2015 (22-24/06/2015) a conference was organized in L'Aquila (Italy). As presented on the

conference's webpage, the conference "promotes cooperation in the thermal science and heat

transfer by bringing together scientists, researchers, those in industry, laboratories as well as

students to network, learn more and share their knowledge". The paper "Numerical investigation of

the flow in axial water turbines and marine propellers with scale-resolving simulations" was

presented at the conference. The paper has been selected, among the best papers, as eligible to be

published on the IOP Conference series on-line journal.

3.10 6th IAHR WG Meeting –month M20

In September 2015 (24-25/9/2015) a biannual international IAHR working group conference for

hydraulic machinery was organized in Ljubljana (Slovenia). The IAHR WG meeting is primarily

intended for researchers from Europe, but usually also researchers from the other parts of the world

attend the meeting as well. After a long time the meeting was organized in Ljubljana, a location

particularly convenient to attend the meeting.

Three manuscripts were submitted by the ACCUSIM team:

- "Cavitation Prediction in a Kaplan Turbine Using Standard and Optimized Model Parameters",

- "Numerical Analysis of the Flow Non-uniformity Generated by Symmetrical Suction Elbows of

the Large Storage Pumps" and

The second manuscript is a result of the networking of researcher R1 at the IAHR conference in

Montreal (in 2014). The manuscript is a result of two similar cases (by two researchers), combined

into one paper. The third paper was created from previous activity of researcher R1.

3.11 Regional conference ‘Kuhljevi Dnevi’ (Kuhelj’s Days) – month M20 In September 2015 (24-25/9/2015) a regional annual conference 'Kuhljevi dnevi' was organized in

Maribor (Slovenia). The conference aims to disseminate state-of-the-art research from the field of

mechanical engineering and to promote the discussions to Slovenian researchers, students and

representatives of companies. The conference is held in memoriam to prof. Kuhelj and the official

conference language is Slovenian.

The study "Effect of Losses in Labyrinth Seals on Efficiency of a High Head Francis Turbine" was

presented at the conference. The study is an extract from the results presented at the Workshop

Francis-99 (Trondheim, Norway, 2015), and was aimed at the Slovenian-spoken researchers from

different fields of research.

The activities can be classified into the same work packages/tasks as in the case of Francis-99

Workshop: Task T.1.1 (Usage of Open-Source CFD Software) and Task T.2.1 (CFD Simulation of a

Francis Turbine with Advanced Turbulence Models).

3.12 9th International Symposium on Cavitation, CAV 2015 – month M23

In December 2015 (06–10/12/2015) the 9th International Symposium on Cavitation was organized in

Lausanne, Switzerland. An emphasis of this high-valued symposium is on basic cavitation research

(either numerical or experimental), and is organized in 3-years intervals. Researchers and engineers

that were present at the meeting, came from a wide spectrum of fields, such as hydro-machinery,

naval engineering, medicine, fuel systems, developers of numerical methods etc.

The manuscript "Numerical predictions of the turbulent cavitating flow around a marine propeller

and an axial turbine" presents results of the simulation of cavitating flow in an axial turbine,

comparing two sets of cavitation models (default and optimized one).

3.14 NAFEMS Seminar – month M26

In March 2016 (16/03/2016) the NAFEMS (International Association for the Engineering Modelling,

Analysis and Simulation Community) organized a seminar entitled ‘La Fluido-Dinamica

Computazionale Nella Simulazione Ingegneristica - Seminario di Sensibilizzazione’. The seminar,

organized in Torino, Italy, was of regional type with broad audience (i.e., researchers from various

fields, but in particular engineers from industry directly involved in CAE/CFD). The presentation

“Numerical predictions of the performances of hydraulic turbines and marine propellers” presented

ACCUSIM project's results in regards with the Francis and Kaplan turbines, as well as in regards with

the optimization of the centrifugal pump. For complete presentation of hydraulic machines, the

presentation included also a Pelton turbine simulation, as well as a simulation of the propeller.

The presented paper is an overview of many ACCUSIM project's results, so the activity can be

In May 2016 (05/05/2016) Dragica Jošt presented some resent numerical results to the students of

UNITS. The title of the presentation was “Recent improvements of performance prediction by CFD

for all types of water turbines”. The presentation was focused on improvement of efficiency and

cavitation prediction with transient simulations using advanced turbulence models (SAS SST, zonal

LES). The results of the Francis'99 workshop and resent results for the axial turbines were included in

the presentation. Also results for Pelton turbines obtained with free surface model were presented.

3.16 Tutorial for students at UniTS by researcher R1 (Aljaž Škerlavaj) – month M28

On 09/05/2016 Aljaž Škerlavaj conducted a tutorial for M. Sc. Mech. Eng. students at UNITS about

numerical simulation of a pump, for which he also prepared written instructions (which form a part

of this deliverable). The tutorial is available for students at the webpage moodle2.units.it.

3.17 modeFRONTIER User‘s Meeting 2016 – month M28

The modeFRONTIER software is a software tool for optimization, which is used in the ACCUSIM

project. In May 2016 (17-18/05/2016) an international user's meeting was organized in Trieste (Italy).

All four researchers, performing secondments during the ACCUSIM project, were present at the

meeting. Researcher Aljaž Škerlavaj presented his results about optimization of the centrifugal pump

("Optimization of a single-stage double-suction centrifugal pump using different Response Surface

methods"). The feedback was positive - there was an interesting suggestion from the public, which

was tested at a later time. The meeting was a good chance to learn about the capabilities of the

modeFRONTIER software on real cases. On 19/05/2016 the researchers attended the training

courses.

The described activities belong to work package WP1 (Transfer of Knowledge to TI) - task T.1.3

(Usage of Optimization Algorithms and Optimization Software), as well as to WP4 (Optimization) -

3.18 ANSYS Convergence Conference – month M28

3.20 Academy of Mech. Engineering & 5th International Conference of Mech.

Engineers – month M33 The event was held in Cankarjev dom (the "house of culture"), Ljubljana, on 18/10/2016. The goal of

the event is to stimulate a closer cooperation between industrial and academic spheres of

mechanical engineering. At the event, lifetime awards and awards for the recognition of Slovenian

companies abroad were granted, which was later followed by the presentation of the posters and

social evening. Dragica Jošt and Aljaž Škerlavaj attended the event and presented the ACCUSIM

project with the poster entitled Napoved kavitacije v vodnih turbinah z računalniško dinamiko tekočin

– rezultati projekta ACCUSIM (CFD Prediction of Cavitation in Water Turbines – results of the

ACCUSIM project). The poster is available also online at http://www.zveza-

Maribor, Slovenia, visited Kolektor Turboinstitut. Dragica Jošt and Aljaž Škerlavaj gave short lectures

about the ACCUSIM project, and water turbines and pumps in general. The students were satisfied

with the visit of Kolektor Turboinstitut.

3.22 Presentation for Assoc. for Hydraulic Research (Društvo za hidravlične

raziskave) – month M35

On 15/12/2016 Mitja Morgut presented recent achievements of the ACCUSIM project in regards with

the cavitation modelling. The English title of the presentation was Predictions of cavitating flow in

hydro-turbines and marine propellers by CFD - results of ACCUSIM project. The presentation was

given to the volunteering association, the Association for Hydraulic Research, which unites various

engineers. The goal is to follow, as well as to stimulate, professional and scientific hydraulic research

from the field of civil, mechanical and environmental engineering. Up to two presentations are given

each year. The presentation was very interesting, so the ACCUSIM project was invited to try to

participate in the special issue of the Journal of Mechanical Engineering, by sending a manuscript in

March 2017.

The presentation can be classified into the following transfer-of-knowledge (ToK) and research-

related work packages: WP1, WP2 and WP3. More specifically, the following tasks are associated

3.23 Two presentations at the 7th IAHR WG conference – month M37

The IAHR conference is the most important conference for the scientific and research-related

community for hydraulic turbomachinery. This year, the meeting was organized jointly with the

HYPERBOLE EU project conference in Porto, Portugal, on 1-3/2/2017 (month M37). Dragica Jošt

presented the paper Numerical Prediction of Cavitating Vortex Rope in a Draft Tube of a Francis

Turbine with Standard and Calibrated Cavitation Model, which turned out to be completely in-line

with the topics of the conference. Aljaž Škerlavaj presented the paper Decoupled CFD-based

optimization of efficiency and cavitation performance of a double-suction pump. Both papers drew

others attention. As well, the researchers got acquainted with the new trends of hydraulic turbine

operation, which may cause a lot of damage to turbines in the (near) future.

3.24 Presentation to undergraduate students of Faculty of Mech. Eng., UNIMB –

month M38

On 24/03/2017 the undergraduate students from Faculty of Mech. Engineering, University of

Maribor, Slovenia, visited Kolektor Turboinstitut during the Turboinštitut's "Board of researchers"

meeting. Dragica Jošt and Roberto Renato Stopar gave two lectures about numerical analyses of

Francis turbines and about optimization:

1. Numerical flow analysis with efficiency and cavitation prediction for the Francis turbine

2. Optimization of the runner cone extension in Francis turbines

The students received general information about Francis turbines and were introduced into

possibilities of CFD simulations, related to Francis turbines. KTI's laboratory and production line of

small turbines was presented to the students.

3.25 Presentation to undergraduate students of Faculty of Mech. Eng., UNIMB, and

Faculty of Mech. Eng., UNILJ – month M38

On 31/03/2017 another group of undergraduate students from Faculty of Mech. Engineering,

University of Maribor, Slovenia, and from Faculty of Mech. Engineering, University of Ljubljana,

Slovenia, visited Kolektor Turboinstitut. Roberto Renato Stopar gave a lecture about Kaplan turbines

and also presented a model of the Kaplan turbine in KTI's laboratory. Besides the KTI's laboratory, the

production of small turbines was presented to students.

3.26 Presentation to PhD students of Faculty of Mech. Eng., UNILJ – month M40 On 10/05/2017 the PhD students from Faculty of Mech. Engineering, University of Ljubljana,

Slovenia, visited Kolektor Turboinstitut. Roberto Renato Stopar, Dragica Jošt and Aljaž Škerlavaj gave

lectures about hydraulic machines, cavitation and optimization. KTI's laboratory and production of

small turbines was presented to students.

3.27 A tutorial for MSc Mech. Eng. students at UniTS – month M40

On 15/05/2017 Aljaž Škerlavaj conducted a tutorial for M. Sc. Mech. Eng. students at UniTS about

numerical simulation of a pump. The aim was to show how to create a mesh and how to set up the

simulation. In the end, the results were compared to available experimental results.

3.28 Presentations at the ERCOFTAC Design Optimization course – month M41

The ERCOFTAC's (European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion) course on

design optimization <http://www.ercoftac.org/events/design_optimization_2017/> was organized at

University of Trieste on 05-07/06/2017. The ACCUSIM project was involved by presenting two

studies:

1. Optimization of a double-sided centrifugal pump (A. Škerlavaj)

2. Multiobjective optimization of the Francis turbine runner cone (R.R. Stopar).

Both studies were presented by A. Škerlavaj on 06/06/2017.

The presentations can be classified into the following transfer-of-knowledge (ToK) and research-

related work packages: WP1, task T.1.3. (Usage of Optimization Algorithms and Optimization

Software), and WP4, tasks T.4.1 and T.4.2 (Shape optimization 1 and 2).

3.29 ACCUSIM Summer School – month M44

During the 25-27/09/2017, the ACCUSIM project summer school was organized at Kolektor

Turboinštitut. More about the summer school is presented in the next section.

3.30 Regional conference ‘Kuhljevi Dnevi’ (Kuhelj’s Days) – month M44

In September 2017 (28-29/9/2017) a regional annual conference 'Kuhljevi dnevi' was organized in

Dobrna (Slovenia). The conference aims to disseminate state-of-the-art research from the field of

mechanical engineering and to promote the discussions to Slovenian researchers, students and

representatives of companies. The conference is held in memoriam to prof. Kuhelj and the official

conference language is Slovenian.

The study "Večkriterijska optimizacija hidravlične oblike cilindričnega podaljška rotorja Francisove

turbine" (Multiobjective optimization of a hydraulic shape of runner cone extension in Francis turbine)

was presented at the conference. The study presents a multi-objective optimization of the runner

cone extension, aimed at reducing pressure losses in the draft tube at best efficiency operating point

and at maximal discharge one. The study is aimed at the Slovenian-spoken researchers from different

fields of research.

The activities can be classified into the work packages/tasks: Task T.1.3 (Usage of Optimization

Algorithms and Optimization Software) and Task T.4.1 (Shape Optimization).

3.31 Academy of Mech. Engineering 2017 & 6th Int. Conference of Mech. Engineers

– month M45 The event was held in Cankarjev dom (the "house of culture"), Ljubljana, on 26/10/2017. The goal of

the event is to stimulate a closer cooperation between industrial and academic components of

mechanical engineering. At the event, lifetime awards and awards for the recognition of Slovenian

companies abroad were granted, which was later followed by the presentation of the posters and

social evening. Dragica Jošt and Mitja Morgut attended the event and presented the ACCUSIM

project with the poster entitled Napoved kavitacije v Peltonovi turbini in v centrifugalni črpalki

(Prediction of Cavitation in a Pelton Turbine and in a Centrifugal Pump). The poster is available also

The presented poster represents the extract of the latest results of the ACCUSIM project, which have

not been published elsewhere yet. Default and calibrated mass transfer models were tested for

prediction of sheet cavitation in a Pelton turbine and of cloud cavitation in a centrifugal pump.

The activity can be classified into transfer-of-knowledge (ToK) work package WP1 and research-

related work package WP3. More specifically, the following tasks are associated with this activity:

T.1.2. (Cavitation Modelling), T.3.1. (Initial Cavitation in Hydro Machinery - Calibration of Cavitation

Model for RANS Simulations), T.3.2. (Efficiency and Cavitation Prediction in Hydraulic Machinery -

Simulations with Advanced Turbulence Models) and T.3.3 (Reliable Prediction of Cloud Cavitation on

Hydrofoil).

3.32 Presentation to undergraduate students of Faculty of Mech. Eng., UNIMB –

month M46

On 12/11/2017 a group of undergraduate students from Faculty of Mech. Engineering, University of

Maribor, Slovenia, visited Kolektor Turboinstitut. Dragica Jošt gave a presentation about hydraulic

turbines and CFD. Afterwards, Roberto Renato Stopar and Aljaž Škerlavaj presented laboratory to the

students, with emphasis on the cavitation observation on the propeller-type turbine model.

3.33 Presentation to pupils of Strojna šola Velenje – month M47

On 19/12/2017 large group of pupils (40) from Strojna šola Velenje (High School of Mechanical

Engineering, Velenje, Slovenia), visited Kolektor Turboinstitut. Due to the large number of pupils the

group was split in two, the other one arriving when the first one was finished.

Aljaž Škerlavaj had a presentation about different types of hydraulic turbines, as well as about the

possibilities of CFD for simulations of the turbines. Matjaž Krušec presented the KTI's laboratory for

water turbine model testing.

3.34 Other activities

Besides the activities presented above, other dissemination and outreach activities were performed.

For instance, a very important mass media channel was digital media, represented by the ACCUSIM's

webpage (http://www.accusim.eu/) and supported by YouTube videos, Twitter

(https://twitter.com/AccusimEu) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/accusim.eu) accounts.

The videos that were uploaded to YouTube (and linked from the webpage) allow for a valuable and

rare opportunity of insight into cavitating flow in a centrifugal pump. Some videos were taken at a

test rig in Kolektor Turboinstitut, some were the result of CFD simulations. The videos were post-

processed to include necessary explanations or data.

A short news about the ACCUSIM project approaching the end, as well as with the link to our

webpage and a statement about future collaboration of the partners, was presented at the Water

Power & Dam Construction webpage (http://www.waterpowermagazine.com/news/

newscollaboration-to-continue-as-research-project-comes-to-an-end-6042535), as well as in their

newsletter.

Besides the videos, the webpage includes a detailed step-by-step tutorial that shows how to create

structured and unstructured meshes in ANSYS CFX, in this particular case for a simple pump. The

tutorial consists of a PDF file and three geometry files.

The media that was also not mentioned above was broadcast media, in frame of which a 40-minute

interview with Aljaž Škerlavaj was done for the Radio RAI in January 2018. Link:

4 ACCUSIM Summer School

During the 25-27/09/2017, the ACCUSIM project summer school was organized at Kolektor

Turboinštitut. 36 registered participants attended the summer school not including four invited

lecturers (prof. Jure Ravnik from University of Maribor, prof. Matevž Dular, University of Ljubljana,

Maja Ondracka - private company, prof. Carlo Poloni from University of Trieste) and six lecturers

(Jošt, Škerlavaj, Morgut, Stopar, Nobile, Pavlin) who were part of the ACCUSIM project.

Nine registered participants came from University of Trieste (graduate students and PhD students),

five from University in Maribor, Faculty of Mech. Eng. (2 graduate students, 2 PhD students and one

professor), nine from University of Ljubljana (students and one PhD researcher), 11 from other

companies (also from competitive ones) and two from Kolektor Turboinštitut. Five unregistered

participants attended some of the lectures (four from KTI and one from University of Ljubljana,

Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering).

The scope of the school was to share and disseminate the knowledge and expertise, gained in the

Marie-Curie European project ACCUSIM, about the application of:

Advanced (scale-resolving) turbulence models,

OpenFOAM,

Cavitation modelling and

Design optimization

in hydraulic machines and marine propellers. Invited lecturers were also covering the four aspects of

the scope. A short resume of each presentation was included in published proceedings of the

summer school:

who were not interested to see the KTI’s laboratory, Pre and Post-processing for numerical

simulations of water turbines were presented.

All participants received printed proceedings, advertising material, a sketchbook and a pen. At the

end, the participants received the certificate of attendance.

7 Conclusions

This deliverable presents dissemination and outreach activities of the ACCUSIM project.

During the lifetime of the project, numerous scientific papers were presented at conferences and at

workshops. The dissemination at conferences was an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge,

obtained during the ACCUSIM project, with researchers and engineers. It should be mentioned that

the ACCUSIM project justified its acronym (ACCurate SIMulations). Namely, from the scientific point

of view the results have turned out, in two cases, to be among the best, when compared with other

researchers. Such two cases were the smp'15 blind test case and the Francis-99 open test case. A

short description of achievements at the two workshops, including the links, can be downloaded at

the ACCUSIM's webpage.

Besides numerous dissemination activities, many outreach activities were performed, such as

theoretical and practical (experimental) presentations for students or pupils, organization of summer

school, attended also by employees from similar companies, writing text for technically-oriented

public, creating movies for general public, using broadcast media, etc.

Some results, obtained during the lifetime of the project, will be published after the lifetime of the

project. It is therefore envisaged that the dissemination and outreach activities will continue for a

reasonable period of time after the end of the project.
