“The best part of participating in last year’s AT&T Pro-Am in Pebble Beach was meeting others who share experiences of starting and maintaining a viable insurance business in this marketplace. I learned a great deal from them and truly appreciated that opportunity. Oh, and there's golf to watch too.” — Georganne Rodgers, Delta Insurance

Consider these recent
reports:
In Mt. Lebanon PA, thieves
stole copper piping from an
apartment building under
construction, tearing out inte-
rior walls and insulation to
remove the copper.
In Charlotte NC, an apart-
ment building exploded when
a copper thief damaged gas
lines, causing gas to
accumulate. The gas built up
to such an extent that even
normal use of electricity and
machinery sparked the blast.
In Haverhill MA, copper
thieves broke into the base-
ment of an apartment build-
ing during the weekend and
cut copper pipes from six of
the heating units located
there.
Why Is Copper Targeted?
Over the past few years, a
sharp increase in the theft of

other components

safety and economic chal-
lenges for builders, electric
utilities, property owners, and
the general public. This rise
is alarming but not unex-

metals spike whenever scrap
metal prices rise. And with
the market value of copper
increasing as much as 400%
since 2000, the metal has
become more attractive to
thieves looking for an easy
source of cash. Unscrupu-
lous salvage yards readily
accept copper, often paying
up to 90% of market price.

While Temperatures Cool, Insurance Stays Hot in Texas
From the Desk of Jennipher Acedo, Commercial Underwriter for Texas
Question: I’ve read
about the growing prob-
lem of copper theft. My
insurance agent advised
me to take precautions,
but it seems mostly to be a
problem at construction
sites. Do I need to worry
about this at my apartment
building?
Answer: Yes. Copper
thieves do indeed target
apartment buildings.
