WELCOMEWELCOME TO THE SAIPA’S THIRD ACCOUNTING INDABA!

We developed the Accounting iNdaba in 2019 to provide a platform for accountancy professionals to engage on the future of the profession impacted by technology. During the first iNdaba these discussions focused on how 4IR will leave the finance profession forever changed.

In 2020, the iNdaba allowed delegates to delve into the practical implications and shifts needed to move their respective professions from hindsight, to insight, to foresight. The future is about embracing technology – not fighting it.

ACCOUNTING INDABA 2021 INTRODUCES THE ACCOUNTANCY REVOLUTION!

A Professional Accountant (SA) needs to continuously add to their already extensive set of skills, the latest of which being around infonomics and sustainability. Thank you for joining us for Accounting iNdaba 2021.We hope that this was a meaningful and valuable experience.Warm wishes for the rest of the year, we hope to engage with you soon.

DAY 2

12

The shortage of finance skills is emerging as a significant challenge for accounting practices as they seek to grow their businesses. According to ManpowerGroup’s 13th annual Talent Shortage Survey, accounting and finance placed fourth on the list of South Africa’s top skills shortages. As such, finding, developing, and retaining

talent in these two sectors is key to any accounting firm’s success.

This challenge is compounded by the volume of change the accounting profession has experienced over the past few years – including the need to integrate new technologies such as artificial intelligence into the business, the complexity of managing a multi-generational workforce, and customers looking to their accounting practices to provide strategic consulting.

Here are three essential steps that accounting firms can take to attract and retain the industry’s top talent:

1. Acknowledge industry changes with candidatesThe world of accounting has changed, and skills such as technology literacy, project management, and consulting are as crucial as being able to crunch the numbers. Accounting professionals are expected to serve as financial resources and trusted strategic advisors. Acknowledging this reality can help an accounting firm attract ambitious talent.

When recruiting, it makes sense to openly talk to candidates about how the practice is positioning itself for the future by building new competencies. In discussing how tech innovation has transformed the industry with candidates, accounting firms will demonstrate they have adopted a tech-ready mindset to attract forward-looking, digital-first talent.

BY VIRESH HARDUTH VICE PRESIDENT, SMALL BUSINESS, SAGE AFRICA & MIDDLE EAST

ATTRACTING & RETAININGTOP TALENT IN YOUR ACCOUNTING PRACTICE THREE STEPS

2. Define success and equip staff with tools As new skills like presentation, project management, and relationship building gain prominence in accounting, leading accounting practices will focus on helping their teams fit into the bigger picture of an evolving industry. By providing a clear career development path that includes training and support to develop skills, practices can become more attractive places to work.

Accounting practices should also ensure employees have access to the tools they need to succeed. For example, with technology adoption taking place faster than ever before, accountants of the future will be more comfortable with technology than their predecessors. Upskilling colleagues to feel confident with new technologies like artificial intelligence and bots is a worthwhile investment.

In the hiring process, be particularly mindful of the varied skillsets needed to succeed and consider looking outside of the standard talent pool – beyond traditional accountancy qualifications – to build a firm with the right mix of expertise. Ultimately, if organisations don’t set their employees up for success and outline precisely how they can progress, they risk losing them to firms that do.

3. Ensure your workforce feels valued, engaged, and motivatedIn addition to providing career paths and the right tools, successful accounting practices focus on creating a culture where people feel valued and engaged. This may include having a strategy and vision that provides a north star for the team to follow and provides a transparent view of how each employee can advance their career. In the work-from-home era, flexibility is becoming increasingly important to many professionals.

THE LATEST SKILLS

A Professional Accountant (SA) needs to continuously add to their already extensive set of skills, the latest of which being around infonomics and sustainability, urges Prof Rashied Small, Executive of the Centre of Future Excellence at the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA).

“Infonomics refers to the economic value businesses can achieve by turning raw corporate data into a rich platform for strategic decision-making that allows for sustainability,” he explains. “Infonomics enables accountants to advise business leaders on producing profits while simultaneously benefiting society, the environment and the greater economy.”

As the Fourth Industrial Revolution frees professional accountants from mundane financial administration, this trend signals an Accountancy Revolution, which is the focus of this year’s virtual SAIPA Accounting iNdaba, scheduled for 2-3 November 2021.

Experts speaking at the event will unpack a variety of topics within the theme of infonomics and sustainability, including – among others – how to assess the integrity and quality of data, ethical use of technology, integrated thinking for business sustainability, the dream-vs-reality status of cryptocurrency, understanding sustainable value creation, taxation in a digital economy, and cybersecurity in a cloud accounting environment.

“We are grateful and proud that the SAIPA Accounting iNdaba is considered as an investment opportunity by several high-profile sponsors,” says Shahied Daniels, CEO of SAIPA.

“Standard Bank and Xero are the two platinum sponsors; Sage has taken up the gold sponsorship.”

Commenting on partnering with SAIPA as a platinum sponsor for this year’s iNdaba, Mandisa Zwane, Head of Accounting Sector/Relationship Banking/Business Clients SA at Standard Bank notes that “We are acknowledging the strategic contribution accountants make to the economy and the positive changes the profession is experiencing and would like to lend our voice to a critical conversation which has an impact on the sector to ensure that we align and are driving the right strategic objectives of the sector with one of its key professional bodies.”Hannah Collett, UK & EMEA Communications Manager at Xero, says their involvement in the event was motivated by the fact that the role of accountants has never been more important, with 40% of small and medium-sized business saying that working with an adviser meant they could keep employees on the payroll during the last year.

“We are passionate about working with accounting bodies like SAIPA to push the sector forward. One way we've been supporting is by innovating new financial tools, from launching South Africa’s first digital bank feed that allows the automated flow of business transactions into accounting software, being able to snap receipts and upload the information from anywhere using Hubdoc, to taking all this information to seamlessly collate and eFile VAT returns to SARS,” Collett adds.
