If you enjoy concerts and socialising we have mixed the two together with Classical Conversations and Classical Café…Relax and enjoy concerts, conversations and cake!

Alongside the Middlesbrough Town Hall Classical Concert Series 2012/13 we are introducing….Classical Café! Sit with friends and enjoy a drink from the bar whilst listening to some of the region’s top classical musicians. Ideal if you find the format of classical concerts a bit intimidating or you enjoy concerts but simply fancy a change.

Same music, same musicians, same purpose, just without the formalities.....so ditch the bow tie, come and hear the musicians perform and talk about their music in the relaxed, informal surroundings of Classical Café! The Crypt Bar will be open throughout the concert.

Before each Classical Café! we will be providing the opportunity for discussion on various ‘hot topics’ around music making in Tees Valley. Bigger things can be achieved by working together, so if you are a music organisation, musician, teacher, or simply interested in classical music in the local area come along to help us build a bigger, better future for music making in Tees Valley.

This is your chance to meet, hear speakers, share knowledge and put your views forward or simply enjoy some nice cake and conversations with fellow music lovers!

Either come along to both the networking session and the Classical Café! concert, or come to either separately – both are FREE!

Sarah began piano lessons at the age of 7 and has excelled from the start. She currently studies with David Murray, Head of Keyboard at the Sage Gateshead Weekend School. In 2012 was the classical winner of the Next Brit Thing at the IndigO2 and as a result performed as soloist live at the Royal Albert Hall which was broadcast nationally on Classic FM. Sarah has accepted a scholarship to The Royal Academy of Music to begin in September this year. Sarah will perform works by Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninov and Ravel.

3PM CLASSICAL CAFÉANDREW SNELL, CELLO

Andrew Snell is 15 and from Stockton on Tees. Andrew began studying cello at the age of 9 with Stephen Coss before being accepted into The Sage Weekend School in 2010 where he now studies with James Craig, Sub-principal cellist with the Northern Sinfonia.Andrew is currently in his second year with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and in his third year as a member of the regional youth orchestra, Young Sinfonia, where he is regularly principal cellist. He is a former member of The National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. Andrew hopes to pursue a career as a solo cellist.

Middlesbrough born Soprano Emily Smith and American Tenor David Pisarowill be performing a recital of popular English and American songs and duets. From composers such as Handel, Vaughan Williams, Barber and Bernstein this Anglo -American offering is sure to satisfy any transatlantic appetite. Emily and David will also be providing a masterclass for aspiring singers in the morning of this concert, see page 6 for more details.

EMILY SMITH AND DAVID PISARO

MASTERCLASSES TOP TIPS FROM TOP ARTISTS!An opportunity for music students to gain expert tuition. If you are a teacher and have a promising student who would benefit from a lesson with a top artist, let us know! Masterclasses are a very effective way to inspire young people by having a fresh, new look on the pieces they are working on.

SUNDAY 12TH MAY, 10AM – 1PM, TOWN HALL CRYPTTHIS IS FOLLOWED BY A FREE CONCERT FROM EMILY AND DAVID AT 3PM.

In this masterclass Emily will invite singers of all abilities to work on songs and arias from the English song repertoire. These could include traditional folk songs, songs from the classical and romantic era as well as modern classical composers. Emily will work on presentation, interpretation, technique and musical phrasing in a fun and inspiring way.

David has a way of making high level classical music accessible to all without compromising on quality or content. He is pleased to offer a Masterclass on American Song which can include composers such as Copeland and Bernstein, but also the wide net cast by the phrase: “The American Song Book”. This encompasses jazz standards, blues songs and perennial showtunes. Students will have the chance to hone their skills and give their lingo a transatlantic buzz to remember.

WILLIAM FONG

BRODSKY QUARTET

SATURDAY 20TH APRIL, 10AM – 1PM, MAIN HALL,MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN HALL

William is of North East origin and studied at Chetham’s School of Music then at the Royal Northern College of Music. His international engagements have included appearances in New York, Moscow and St Petersburg (under the auspices of the Sviatoslav Richter Foundation) and across France and Spain. William’s concerts have been broadcast on television and on radio in Europe and the US. In the UK he has performed at all London’s major venues and his concerts have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and BBC television.

He is also Head of Keyboard at the Purcell School in London and visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music. In this masterclass William will coach young pianists on their own choice of repertoire. He will advise on musical interpretation, technique and suggest ways for improving performance.

SUNDAY 16TH JUNE, 10AM – 1PM, TOWN HALL CRYPT THIS IS FOLLOWED BY A CONCERT FROM THE BRODSKY QUARTET AT 3PM

Since its formation in 1972, the Brodsky Quartet has performed over 2,000 concerts on the major stages of the world and released more than 50 recordings. A natural curiosity and insatiable desire to explore has propelled the group in many artistic directions and continues to ensure them not only a place at the very forefront of the international chamber music scene but also a rich and varied musical existence. Their energy and craftsmanship have attracted numerous awards and accolades worldwide, while ongoing educational work provides a vehicle for passing on experience and staying in touch with the next generation.

Now the Brodsky String Quartet are coming to Middlesbrough Town Hall! They will begin the day with a masterclass for young quartets. This is a fantastic opportunity for string players wanting to gain advice on ensemble playing and techniques for blending the sounds of the string instruments in the quartet form.

Pursuing a career in classical music doesn’t just mean getting up onto the stage. , There are many varied careers under the classical music umbrella! This mentoring programme will support 6 local young musicians aged under 25 and offer them an opportunity to talk to and be mentored by a range of professionals. Mentors will be available who can offer advice on orchestral playing, studying at a conservatoire, composing and conducting, singing leading, arranging, recording, arts management, promoting yourself – and more! What better way to get an insight into the real life of a classical musician?

MENTORING SUPPORTING TEES VALLEY’S CLASSICAL MUSICIANS OF THE FUTURE

SPECIAL CONCERT!

In celebration of the Brodsky Quartet’s 40th anniversary they present the ‘Wheel of 4Tunes’! This fantastic event promises a diverse programme of music chosen in an informal and fun way. Throughout the evening the wheel will be spun to create a programme from a selection of 40 of their favourite quartets and short pieces. The music will all be kept at the quartet’s feet throughout the concert and each piece will be picked out as it arises! The quartet will also discuss the music and invite questions from the audience - creating an ‘Audience with the Brodskys’ feel.

SUNDAY 16TH JUNE, 3PM, TOWN HALL CRYPT TICKETS: £12, CONCESSION £8

1st spin All the pieces in this section are typical ‘openers’ of around 5-10 minutes long and range from Mozart and Schubert to Piazolla and Turina.

2nd spin These pieces are about 20 minutes long and again show a wide range of composers from Beethoven to Britten. They are all pieces that the Brodsky Quartet would offer in many of their concerts.

Interval 3rd spin This section presents works that were written in the quartet’s lifetime – a

great opportunity for audiences to hear something new. 4th spin These are the longer, more traditional string quartets of about 30 minutes

such as Elgar, Mendelssohn and Schubert
