The original Land Rover rolled off the Solihull production line in 1948 and enjoyed greatsuccess through the 1950s. The launch of the Series II in 1958 further established the

marque’s reputation for durability and practicality. It was given a new larger petrol engine,synchromesh was added to 3rd and 4th gears and the bodywork got the shape we are sofamiliar with today.

1961 saw the introduction of the Series IIa with not many significant changes other thanthe diesel engine getting bored out to 2.25Lt. A 12 seat Station Wagon version was launchedin 1962 which led to the demise of the 10 seat 107" model.

A 6 cylinder 2.6Lt petrol option was the next major change introduced in 1967 togetherwith a re-designed dashboard. Export models had the headlamps moved from the grille to thewings in 1968 - a feature added to UK models in 1969. Also in 1968 we got the “1 Ton” LandRover which was given heavy duty transmission and lower gear ratios to aid with towing andto improve off-road capabilities.

The Series IIa models continued to evolve through the 1960s and many variations ofwheelbase and body style were developed to increase Land Rover’s flexibility to suit a widerange of markets from military to agricultural and emergency services.

This programme culminated with the introduction of Series III in 1971 - not a completerevamp but with significant changes to the gearbox, clutch and braking systems. The Salisburyrear axle became standard fitment to 109"vehicles from 1972 and the electrical systemwas upgraded with an alternator replacing theold dynamo.

The Series III bodywork remained almostunchanged although the metal grille wasreplaced with a plastic one. Inside, thedashboard was now padded and theinstrumentation moved in front of the driver;door interiors were upholstered, an improved

heater was added and even a radio wasavailable as an option.

Series IIIs were producedthrough to 1985, overlapping the

production of Defenders whichstarted in 1983 – but that’sanother story…

ROOF RACKSFamily holiday, major expedition or just too much to putinside the vehicle – a robust roof rack is an essentialaccessory. Bearmach supply a number of roof racks forthe Landrover range. For Series vehicles, the majority ofthe roof racks are simply held into the gutter around theroof with brackets. Available in black powder coating orgalvanised finish, with an optional ladder in most cases.

Polyurethane Bushes have been taking over the automotive suspensionindustry. The urethane elastomers used have the versatility and elasticity ofrubber yet with the advantages of rigid plastics and metals.
