Our Approach The Democratic Republic of Congo is the second most populous country in sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimated total population of 71 million people—47 percent of which are under the age of 15. In the past, DRC has experienced significant political turbulence and instability, particularly in eastern Congo and as of 2014 was placed at 186 of 187 countries, according to UNDP’s Human Development Index. IMA World Health began working in the DRC in 2000 and is a recognized leader in partnering with the Ministry of Health, donors, faith-based and non faith-based organizations to strengthen health systems for improved delivery of services. The Access to Primary Health Care Project, known locally as Accès aux Soins de Santé Primaires or ASSP, has achieved great success in strengthening the health system by focusing on priority interventions such as the treatment of malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea; nutrition; obstetric and neonatal care; family planning; immunization; and water, hygiene and sanitation that are delivered through the health system. Over 65,000 health workers have been registered in iHRIS health-force management software. 1.32 million new acceptors of modern methods of family planning. 1.27 million pregnant women received two doses of intermittent preventative treatment in pregnancy. ASSP has completed 253 health centers, including 79 new construction and 174 completed renovations. On average, 1,745 health facilities are submitting routine monthly reports using DHIS2. On average, ASSP programs exceeded targets by 6%. 2.26 million Bed nets distributed.

ASSP has seen a steady increase in annual service utilization since the start of the project, from 2.5 million per year at baseline to 5.6 million at Year 5.

The majority of ASSP’s indicators have also seen a steady increase since the start of the project. 786

CODESA (community development commitees) are essential in supporting health activities within their health catchment area. This includes organizing scorecard meetings, as well as the follow-up on community recommendations.

At the end of the Year 5, ASSP has successfully integrated the community scorecard program in all 52 assisted HZs, with a coverage of 89% of health areas. This process aids in developing plans to improve a variety of factors that impact health uptake.
