efore starting with the main project, students participated in an activity in which they

had the chance to learn a little more about their new classmates. Then, students had to make

calendars with images making allusion to animals and environmental issues. As the aim of the

activity was to raise awareness, the calendars are now hanging on the walls of all the

classrooms of the Institution, the library and the computer lab.

English for Journalists June 5, 2012

n June 5 Access students from second year took part in the workshop “English for

journalists” conducted by Paulina Schmidt, a freelance journalist for La Capital

newspaper. On this occasion, students learned about the process of how the news story comes

to being and the importance of the different means of communication in our every day lives.

Paulina shared her experience as a journalist with the students, telling them about all her jobs

and places where she has worked over the years. Students enjoyed this workshop very much

and they were ‘journalists’ themselves when they had to interview their partners to learn

more about what each of them had learned from the workshop. During the presentation,

members of the USA Embassy visited the class and interacted with students and Paulina.

Devon’s visit June 25 and 26, 2012

On June 25th and 26th, Access students received a very special visit. Devon Arndt is a

twenty-year-old American girl who came to Rosario some weeks ago as part of an internship

between ARICANA and St. Catherine University. Devon is from Minnesota and during her stay

she is visiting different classes in order to talk to students, exchange experiences and tell them

about her country.

On this special occasion, Devon gave Access students a Power Point Presentation on

some cities from the United States which she finds really beautiful and interesting such as

Boston, New York, Savannah, Chicago, Santa Fe, Seattle and her hometown, Saint Paul. After

the presentation they had a nice talk with Devon during which they could learn a bit more

about her and practise their English.

One more time, Access students enjoyed a most valuable experience and were very

happy with it. We want to thank Devon for being so nice and friendly and sharing her

knowledge and experience with the students.

Devon is a very interesting person.

She comes from a beautiful city. She

is a bit shy. I like how she speaks

English. Thank you!

American Independence Day. One of the activities was held at the Library, where students

were asked to look for information in books about important people and places related to the

Independence processes of both countries. Then, they wrote the information they found on

maps. In the mean time, another group was working in a different classroom with a Power

Point Presentation about the independence of the United States and how Americans usually

celebrate it today. Devon Arndt, an American girl, was also present during the activities and

told students a bit more about this celebration, its importance and what she likes to do on that

good  food. There were  incredible costumes

too.

At the party  I danced and talked with my

friends.  I  wore  a  costume  of  a  dead

person,  but  it  wasn’t  very  real.  I  liked

some of  the costumes a  lot,  for example,

Jack Sparrow’s costume that won a prize. I

also  liked  the “dead” people.  I didn’t win

any  award but  I  really  enjoyed  the party

and the music. I had lots of fun.

Pablo Balbo – Access 2C

The  party  was  great.  I  wore  a  witch

costume.  I  won  500  candies.  I  was  very

happy. I gave them to the children from my

neighborhood.  I  liked  Cindy’s  costume‐it

was the best. I didn’t win a prize at the party

but  I didn’t care because  I  liked  it so much.

The music was nice, the place was good and

all the costumes were excellent.
