The yard and food waste collection programs in Thurston County have gone through several changes over the past few years. This left many residents and businesses confused about what to put in their carts.

On the other side of this insert is a flyer that shows you what goes in your yard and food waste cart. Posting this easy-to-use list where everyone can see it will help “Keep the Green Clean.” Larger printable versions of the flyer can be found at ThurstonSolidWaste.com/organics.

Yard & food waste collection made easy

Composting facilities have a zero-tolerance policy for contaminants like plastic, metal, and glass. No one wants these things in their gardens or yards. Even small amounts of them can contaminate a very large load of compost. The most common sources of contamination are the layers of plastic that coat a wide variety of paper products. These include coffee and soda cups, paper plates, and take-out containers. Even if the paper composts, the plastic is left behind and is almost impossible to remove from the finished product. You can help ensure the availability and affordability of our local yard and food waste program by only placing the items listed on the other side of this handout in your curbside cart. Please remember: When it doubt, throw it out!
