Dear Friends,

Every child should have the opportunity to reach his or her greatest potential. At the

Achievement Centers for Children, we truly mean every child, even those who face

significant obstacles.

Our mission is to enable and empower children with disabilities and their families to grow,

learn, play and prepare for lifelong achievement in society. At the Achievement Centers for

Children, we focus on what a child can achieve, not on what might hold him or her back. We are

humbled and inspired by the children we serve because they work hard to overcome what can

seem like impossible challenges to experience extraordinary successes. With support from family,

the passion and expertise of our staff, and the assistance and contributions of our volunteers,

donors, and Board of Directors, our clients have the tools they need to live a life of achievement.

After celebrating 75 years of service last year, we have spent this year reexamining our

mission and all the ways we work to fulfill it. The stories of the various children in this report will

illustrate how we enable and empower those who come to us for services to meet their goals.

Alexis has been able to grow, learn, and play at Camp Cheerful through therapeutic horseback

riding, swimming, socializing with friends, gaining independence, and just having fun. Likewise,

TayVon, as a student in our Autism School, has been able to learn from qualified and dedicated

teachers, physical and occupational therapists, and aides in a setting that encourages his

curiosity, speech, and comfort in the classroom. Through his work at the Achievement Centers,

TayVon is being prepared for lifelong achievement in society.

Our circle of support here at the Achievement Centers for Children includes the teen playing

for the Junior Wheelchair Cavaliers competing against teams in other states, and the newborn

benefiting from the bonding and soothing techniques taught in our infant massage classes.

It includes the child rewriting his prognosis by learning to stand and walk in intensive therapy,

or the child learning to communicate with the help of innovative techniques and tools.

These successes are why we do what we do. We remain committed to looking at our clients

and their needs in creative ways and using a multi-disciplinary approach to serving them.

As you will see in the following pages, we have experienced an exciting year of positive

outcomes and possibilities, in part because of generous supporters like you. We thank you

for your commitment to our mission, and our children and families!

Sincerely,

Sally Farwell, MEd

As an infant, Dallas required extensive medical care for

hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, and other complications. “At the

time of his birth, no one could tell me what to expect for Dallas’

development. In his first year of life, it seemed that everyone outside of family wanted to do

something medical with him, and he became afraid of new people” said his mother, Joy.

At two-and-a-half years old, Dallas started occupational therapy at the Achievement Centers.

Soon physical therapy and speech therapy were added. His therapy team thought he could

make even greater progress if he was better able to accept their guidance.

Social workers with our Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMH) and Accent programs joined

Dallas’ care team. Our ECMH staff utilized dolls as a strategy to help Dallas engage in

conversations with his therapists and build a higher level of trust in them. He happily became

more engaged and motivated in his therapies. During his current therapy sessions, Joy meets

with an Accent social worker to discuss any needs she may have including linking her to

community resources and advocating alongside her at school IEP meetings. “The best thing

I can do is just give him the greatest opportunities for success I can. Through working with the

outstanding people at the Achievement Centers, we progressed further with Dallas’ physical,

speech and cognitive development than I ever imagined.” said Joy.

Now four years old, Dallas and his mother consider his Achievement Centers’ care team their

friends. Dallas is now able to stand and run, has an extensive vocabulary and an infectious

laugh, enjoys jazz and gospel music, and is especially inquisitive about how things work.

Joy knows their Achievement Centers’ care team will be beside her all the way on her

journey with Dallas.

Meet ten-year-old Alexis Gyory. She’d like to tell you all about

playing at Camp Cheerful.

“I’m sweet and I love my dad and mom. I have a dog named Poncho. He’s a schnauzer

and is black. The best things about Camp Cheerful are my counselors. I love all of them!

They are nice to me, and I try hard to listen to them, but sometimes it’s hard. My favorite

things to do at camp are swimming, going down the slides, playing games, and arts and

crafts. I want to stay overnight at camp next year. I think it will be fun to sleep in the cabins.

The beds are cool and sometimes they have campfires and dances at night. I also ride

horses here every Monday. My favorite horse is Butter because she likes to trot and she

listens to me, but she doesn’t always do what I tell her. I know how to stand up in the

stirrups on the horse and ‘post.’ I think it’s good exercise for me.” —Alexis

Alexis’ father, Eric, added, “For Alexis, being an only child, camp is a great opportunity to

get her out socializing with other kids, and it’s making her more independent.” Her mother,

Annette, added, “Alexis makes sure we read the daily reports from camp, then she explains

everything to us. For example, today, she had some trouble transitioning from one activity

to another, but she was very welcoming and friendly to new children coming to camp.

We love talking with her about her day. I think all the activities at camp have made her

stronger physically and improved her social skills.”

When Alexis, who has Down syndrome, comes to Camp Cheerful, she is a typical child

having a great time playing . . . and growing, learning, and preparing for lifelong

achievement in society. To Alexis, she’s having a great summer at camp!

TavYon’s mother, Carmel, watched as her two-and-one-half

year old son’s behavior changed before her eyes. The child

that was starting to talk and sing his ABC’s, started isolating himself, and stopped talking,

engaging with people, and making eye contact. TavYon starting running from his mother,

biting, spitting, and having tantrums for no apparent reason, sometimes lasting hours.

Carmel, who is hearing impaired, faced even greater challenges and frustrations

communicating with her son who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

After having unsuccessful experiences with several child care centers and their local

public school, TavYon started second grade at the Achievement Centers Autism School in

Highland Hills. His mother saw a tremendous change in her son in a short period of time.

He was finally toilet trained, started talking, responding, expressing his emotions, and

his behavior began to improve.

Today, TavYon is 11 years old. He has developed into a very curious boy who loves to

learn and memorize facts, especially animal facts. He loves anything electronic, and is a

real perfectionist. Carmel appreciates the emotional support and strategies she receives

from our classroom staff. Of most comfort to his mother, is seeing TavYon learning to read

and be more independent. Carmel said, “I was always afraid—would he be able to be on

his own? I want him to succeed and be independent. If he wants to go to college, or

live by himself, I want him to be able to manage his life.”

In September, TavYon will attend sixth grade in our Autism School in Westlake. In addition

to academics, he will continue to learn daily life skills like how to make his own meals,

and more pre-vocational skills such as basic assembly work for local businesses. With

patience and understanding, TavYon will take more steps to independence and lifelong

achievement in society.

From 1940 when four Cleveland Rotarians opened the doors of the Achievement

Centers for Children, then known as the Society for Crippled Children, to the

present, our foundation has consisted of passionate, caring supporters. Dedicated

contributors further our mission in so many ways: from children collecting coins at a

lemonade stand to large corporate sponsors; from individual volunteers guiding riders on

horseback to large groups of volunteers tackling construction projects at Camp Cheerful;

from our committed, hardworking staff to the passionate guidance and expertise of our

Board of Directors. We share a common community as advocates for our mission.

Members of our Board of Directors have always been our guiding light, embracing our

mission on a personal level to make a difference with the clients and families we serve.

They are generous supporters offering their expertise, experience, financial resources, and

time. They play an active role in numerous ways such as coaching adapted football players,

running a 5k race at our “A Most Excellent Race,” or inviting colleagues to our black tie

event, “Sparkle, Shimmer and Shine.” They are enthusiastic advocates that encourage

others to get involved. We could not have the impact we do for our families without the

exceptional members of our Board of Directors.

We are so very grateful to our Board of Directors and all our supporters who give from

their hearts to brighten the futures of children with disabilities and their families!
