PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome once again to the Sir John Wilson T own Hall, Airdrie for Opera W eek 2016. Following a very hectic 2015 we are thrilled to be presenting what is fast becoming a modern classic: Sunshine on Leith.
Choosing a show can be a daunting task for a club. The Committee’s job is to suggest shows which balance a performance budget, are commercially viable and have plenty in them to keep our talented members busy onstage. Given the setting, the accents and the songs, it is no surprise that Sunshine is a show that many Scottish clubs are queuing up to
perform and ACAOS are proud to be one of the first amateur clubs in the central belt to perform it. If we’re honest however , the audience popularity of this show is something we underestimated and something nobody could have forecasted. Everyone loves the movie, right? Everyone loves the music, right? So we expected it to be popular. What we were not expecting however was to sell out every night of production several weeks before we open! As President, it’s been exciting to watch the sales climb each week (and to see our ticket team run off their feet each week!) as we build towards opening night. 2015 was a busy year for our members as we performed two shows throughout the year. Sunshine is now our third show in a row and despite little time off, our members have continued to display their dedication and hard work throughout rehearsals. Indeed all cast, crew and members have all worked tirelessly to get Sunshine on stage. I would like to express my sincere thanks to each and every one of them.
Special thanks go to our production team: Tom, Lisa and Ross. They do a fantastic job of pushing our talented cast to deliver an unforgettable show . Without them it would not be possible to reach the high standards on display tonight. We are further supported in our efforts by the dedication of a large number of volunteers who find the time to help us stage our productions: to you all, I thank you on behalf of the Society.
Finally to you, our valued audience, patrons and sponsors, thank you once again for your continued support. We are already well underway planning our next production for March 2017: Rock of Ages. We can’t wait to welcome you back then; this is another ACAOS show not to be missed and after this year I would be sure to book early to avoid disappointment!

ACAOS’ NEWEST MEMBER
August 2015 saw the arrival of baby and future ACAOS star , Keir Smith. Keir is destined to stage stardom, as his dad is none other than current ACAOS president Alan, while his mum is talented cast member Lesley-Anne. As if this wasn’ t enough, his gran is past president Anne, his papa is house manager Arthur and his aunty is Property Manager Lesley - keeping ACAOS in the family!
LET’S GET MARRIED!
There were two ACAOS weddings this year and given the focus this year’s show places on relationships, we thought we would celebrate them all over again. Cast
and main committee member Lynsay married stage crew stalwart Ian Young (pictured on the left with ACAOS pals in predictably full on ‘jazz hands’ pose) while this year’s leading lady Gillian wed beau Mark MacKissack. Congratulations to both couples from all of your friends at ACAOS.

SUNSHINE ON LEITH SYNOPSIS Davy and Ally , return to their homes and families in Edinburgh after a tour of Afghanistan. On their first night home Ally’s girlfriend Liz introduces Davy to her English friend and nursing colleague Y vonne at a pub and romance ensues. Meanwhile Davy’s dad Rab receives an unexpected letter from a woman he had a brief affair with in the early days of his marriage to Davy’s mum Jean. Later, Ally explains to Davy that he intends to propose to his sister Liz during the 25th wedding anniversary party for Davy’ s parents Rab and Jean. At the anniversary party Rab serenades Jean, but during the song, Jean discovers the letter still in Rab’ s jacket and is outraged at Rab’s infidelity. Ally, unaware of this turn of events, then proposes to Liz, who turns him down. A brawl erupts and Y vonne is horrified to witness Davy’s aggression.
Though Davy and Yvonne fight to save their burgeoning relationship, it appears that Liz and Ally want different things. Meanwhile, Jean sends Rab to Coventry (and the sofa). Rab does his best to make amends in the hopes of reconciliation with Jean. Tragedy strikes however and he suffers a heart attack on his doorstep. As the family struggles to come to terms with this, the three couples are also forced to reflect on what they want from their relationships; they must decide what they are willing - and what they are not willing - to fight for.

Thomas Gemmell - Director Thomas is delighted to return to direct for ACAOS after the successes of All Shook Up, Calamity Jane, Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story, Godspell and Summer Holiday. He has also directed musicals for other societies, including My Fair Lady, Annie Get Your Gun, Oklahoma! and Carousel, as well as directing a range of plays including Men Should Weep, Twelve Angry Men, Breaking the Code, Play it Again Sam, The Eight Reindeer Monologues, and school productions of Romeo and Juliet, Caesar, Macbeth Recut, Richard III, King Lear and Hamlet. He
is currently a teacher of Drama and Media at a secondary school in Glasgow , but has a background in corporate training and teaching, has acted, produced, directed and toured with his theatre company TheatreFusion, is the writer of The Gunpowder Plot (find it on Amazon), The Whitechapel Murders (which premiered at Glasgow’ s Britannia Panopticon Music Hall in 2006), and the Bram Stoker -inspired The Dark Ladies. His adaptation of Shakespeare’ s Caesar has been produced by schools and colleges in Glasgow , at Bathgate Regal, and by a college in the USA. He is relishing directing this fantastic new musical.
Lisa Kennedy - ChoreographerLisa is thrilled to be back choreographing her 10th ACAOS production. For over 15 years, Lisa has enjoyed a successful career in teaching, choreographing and performing a variety of styles of dance. Formerly a pro-sports cheerleader , Lisa spent six years as Dance Artist in Residence for Clackmannanshire Council with Scottish T raditions of Dance Trust, which saw her co-choreographing a piece for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games Flag Handover Ceremony in 2010 as well as leading numerous projects nationally . In 2009 Lisa formed the 1940/50s inspired dance troupe ‘The Kennedy Cupcakes’, who have since continued to entertain audiences across the UK and enjoyed great success. As a freelance artist Lisa enjoys working on a variety of collaborative projects. More recently , she choreographed the Tron Theatre’s show ‘Snow Pals’ and has been delivering the NHS INTERACT Forth V alley Health & Wellbeing project, Max in the Middle. Lisa loves dance and it’s a passion she enjoys sharing with everyone regardless of age or ability.
Ross Angus - Musical DirectorSince returning to ACAOS as accompanist for the 2012 production of Godspell, Ross has established himself as a valued member of the production team. He is thrilled to be working alongside T om and Lisa as Musical Director again after the success of ‘All Shook Up’ last summer. Ross graduated from Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with a Bachelor of Education in Music with specialisation in Performance
and Accompaniment in his Honours year . Alongside this, he achieved his Diploma of the ABRSM in Piano Performance. As well as his work with ACAOS, Ross is a high school music teacher, private piano teacher, church organist, freelance musician and keyboard player in The Sentinels wedding band.Ross thoroughly enjoys his involvement with ACAOS, which includes performing as Musical Director for our popular Concert Party, and is quite fond of an occasional club social event.

Gillian MacKissack - LizGillian started performing in dance shows at a very young age and found
a love for amateur theatre while at primary school. With the exception
of a brief pause to focus on university, she has enjoyed appearing in
numerous plays, musicals and pantomimes. This is her third show with
ACAOS after appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar and Calamity Jane and
her first principal role since returning to the stage. She is thrilled to be
performing the part of Liz and would like to take this opportunity to thank all her friends and
family who have come to support her.
Katrina Campbell - JeanKat is thrilled to be back on stage after having baby son, Jude, last year.
This is her 13th year at ACAOS and she has had the pleasure of playing
some fantastic parts, including Yum Yum in Hot Mikado and Erma in
Anything Goes. She equally enjoyed featured roles in West Side Story
and Jesus Christ Superstar. Kat has also had the pleasure of watching
the super talented ‘Team ACAOS’ bring to life two original review shows
that she co-wrote and directed. As she is playing the ‘mammy’ this week, Kat would like to
dedicate her performance to her own mum, Sadie, whose love and support means the world.
Laura Shepherd - YvonneLaura joined ACAOS in 2013 for Come Fly With Me: New Heights and
went on to play Mary in Jesus Christ Superstar and Miss Sandra in last
summer’s hit All Shook Up. She is delighted be taking to the stage with
‘the most talented group of people she has ever met’ and to have been
given the opportunity to play Yvonne in this regional premiere has been
a real privilege for her (being the only English character in a very Scottish
show has presented a few ‘accent’ challenges, however!). Laura would
like to thank her family and friends for their love and support over the last year and hopes you
all enjoy walking the 500 miles with us.

Steven Lambie - DavyAfter some time abroad, Steven is delighted to have the opportunity to
perform once again with ACAOS in Sunshine on Leith . Steven joined
ACAOS back in 2012 for their hugely successful performance of Godspell
and has been a loyal member ever since. In this time, Steven’s characters
have seen him become mentally ill and a devout Christian. Whether he is
playing an asylum inmate (Godspell, 2012), a hoodlum (West Side Story,
2013), or a disciple of Christ (JCS, 2014), he has taken each performance and character in his
stride. Steven wouldn’t be here today without the love and support of his family, friends and
fiancee Brooke.
Grant Campbell - RabGrant’s over the moon to be back on stage with ACAOS, his last outing
having been in 2010’s Singin’ in the Rain when he played the pivotal
role of “Policeman”. During his time away from ACAOS he’ s spent six
consecutive years at the Edinburgh Fringe in various shows including
a sell out run as René in the stage adaptation of ‘Allo ‘Allo. He has
also appeared locally in a number of plays including Of Mice and Men ,
Glengarry Glen Ross and God of Carnage. Offstage he (sadly) has a real job and (gladly) is dad
to Evan and Rose.
Steven Struthers - AllySteven graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama
in 2005. He has performed widely in musical theatre and other mediums
including professional productions, radio and television. He first appeared
onstage with ACAOS as Seymour in the 2003 production of Little Shop of
Horrors but will always be best remembered for his outstanding portrayal
of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar (2014). Steven feels lucky to have had the pleasure to work
with many talented people in ACAOS shows over the years, and loves being part of the club.

IN THE SPOTLIGHTACAOS leading man Steven Lambie has been a busy man: he travelled more than ‘500 Miles’ to work in the US where he met the lovely Brooke, and after returning home, and despite the Atlantic between them, Steven suggested: ‘Let’s Get Married’. Brooke said ‘YES’ and now America’s gain is ACAOS’ loss as our talented and well liked pal intends to head across the pond as soon as Sunshine on Leith closes. W e know he’ll send us a ‘Letter From America’, but we decided to catch up with him before he left just in case.How did you first become involved in ACAOS?My former drama teacher (ACAOS mainstay Susan Campbell) contacted me after ACAOS had put out a call for new men. I hadn’t long left school and had done no acting since so I jumped at the chance to get back into it. Four years later and I can safely say it’s one of the best decisions I have made so far.What was your first show with ACAOS?That was the 2012 production of Godspell which took place in New W ellwynd Church while the Town Hall was under refurbishment. It was a small cast in an unusual location and this really brought the team together. Favourite ACAOS show and why?Well, besides Sunshine on Leith (of course), this has to be West Side Story. After going from a cast of 20 in Godspell, I suddenly found myself part of a cast of 50, a real diverse group. I loved this show for loads of reasons: the fun rehearsal process, the excellent choreography and the challenging music for a start. It was a physically gruelling show, and emotional too. Current VP Iain’s contribution to Vest Sunday was also a highlight (especially when he forgot his lines); that memory will stay with me forever!Any embarrassing or funny moments on stage?Well, I’ll do my best to keep it PG! The worst thing happened in rehearsals. Picture the scene: a rehearsal hall in the winter of 2011. The director Tom (also a former teacher of mine) was delivering an important and very serious concept talk. W e were surrounded by the great and good of ACAOS and I was just in front of T om. Suddenly I realised my trousers were around my ankles and I was standing in my pants (courtesy of a prank by a friend standing behind me). I was too embarrassed to pull them up and continued to hold Tom’s gaze as if nothing had happened. It seemed like an eternity until it was safe to slowly bend forward and pull the breeks back up.What’s the best professional show you’ve seen?Difficult to choose just one. ‘Once’, ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ or anything by Cirque du Soleil would do. But I recently saw ‘Kinky Boots’ in the West End and it’s a stand out. Everything you could want from a musical.Other interests outside ACAOS?I love sports, fitness and circus training and performing. I developed a love for circus work after spending numerous summers in the US at camps. It was at one of these camps that I met my fiancee Brooke, who was a dance and musical theatre instructor and has played Gabriella in the North American and Asian tour of High School Musical. This technically makes me Zac Efron, of course. Doesn’t it?What do you most enjoy about being a member of ACAOS?The best thing about ACAOS is the sense of family within the club, I feel a chemistry in the group. This includes the ‘unsung heroes’ behind the scenes that make the club what it is. I woud just like to take this chance to thank them all for what they do for us onstage. We’re not just a group - we’re a family.
We couldn’t agree more Steven, and you remain part of the ACAOS family no matter how far you travel. All your friends in ACAOS wish you and Brooke a long and happy life together - you’re on your way!
In November this year , superstar duo The Proclaimers visited Lanarkshire and when they
heard about ACAOS’ upcoming production of Sunshine on Leith they happily lent their
support (including an unprompted shout out during their gig!).
Afterwards, Charlie and Craig posed for pictures, chatted with our principal cast and wished
them well for our production. With sell out audiences attending the Sir John Wilson this
week, we’re confident we’ll do the boys proud. .

NODA SCOTLAND GOLF TOURNAMENT
August 2015 saw the annual NODA Golf Tournament, and ACAOS sent along a superteam consisting of Grant Johston, Arthur Smith, Gavin Johnston and Alan Love.
We are pleased to report it was happy hunting as past president Grant won the individual competition and came in as runner up alongside front of house manager Arthur in the team competition (left).

ACAOS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS: LONG SERVICE AND THE HARRY HAMILTON AWARD
2016 is a special year for two of the ACAOS team, stage director Alan Love and club sec-retary Laraine Johnston (left). Laraine has reached the milestone of ten years, while Alan has registered an impressive 25 years of dedication to our club.Both carry out crucial roles within ACAOS and do so with aplomb. The Harry Hamilton A ward is reserved for members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in service of ACAOS. This year, treasurer Iain A Campbell and club secretary Laraine Johnston were recognised (right, with president Alan Smith). Iain, for extended service and for negotiating the club’s move to charitable status and Laraine for pioneering the almagamation of roles into overall club secertary. All in ACAOS extend their thanks to you both.
NODA LONG SERVICE AWARDS
NODA long service awards recognise the contributions of individuals towards amateur theatre. ACAOS were proud to present awards to members (from left to right) Lynsay Young (10 years), Grant Johnston (15 years) and Lesley Smith (20 years). Well done and thank you all.
The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) was founded in 1899 and has a membership of 2500 amateur theatre groups and over 2000 individual enthusiasts through -out the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls. NODA is divided into eleven regions, each headed by a regional councillor who sits on the national council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of regional rep -resentatives. These 190 volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre groups themselves.
NODA aims: • To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector• To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the
highest standards of best practice and performance• To provide leadership and advice to enable amateur
theatre to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century
Membership of NODA provides theatre groups with a wide range of benefits including access to NODA’s advice service at national and regional level, as well as representation to government, access to funding agencies, direct access to rights holders and the media, and access to conferences, workshops and seminars to help share information on best practice. NODA also holds an annual residential Summer School (with bursaries available) offering training from professional tutors in a wide range of both performance and technical courses. A similar residential youth academy has also been introduced to provide training for those under 18. NODA also publishes regular regional magazines as well as its quarterly national magazine, Theatre Business, designed to help those running theatre groups, and holds annual national and regional Programme and Poster competitions, to encourage the highest standards in design.
