Artwork

Incorporating our HeritageAcademy Services began as a commercial cleaning company in 1979 in Adelaide, the traditional home to the Kaurna people who occupied and managed the grassy Adelaide Plains for countless generations.

Since then, Academy has expanded nationally and founded Academy Indigenous Services

together with Paul Brock, an Adelaide business man descending from the Barngarla people of Whyalla and Port Augusta.

As a Group, it was important that the identity of both our RAP and Academy Indigenous Services reflect the history of our company and the land of our origin.

Sid Domic

Sid is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer of the 1990s and 2000s. Domic played in Australia for the Brisbane Broncos and Penrith Panthers and in England for the London Broncos, Warrington Wolves, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Hull.

Sid started painting in 1996 at the age of 21. He is a descendant of the Kalkadoons of Northwest Queensland.

We engaged Sid’s services to create an artwork to represent the combined heritage of our company and community.

OUR ARTIST

Kardi the emu is a significant animal totem to the Kaurna people of Adelaide

It is said that the Barngarla people ‘sang to the sharks’, when the women would dance on the beach while the men sang on the rocks for the sharks and dolphins to drive fish to the shore, to be speared by the men.

This is a powerful story of collaboration and represents our desire to work together with the individuals of our company and community for the benefit and success of all.

The red concentric circles represent Academy Indigenous Services.

The blues represent the ocean and fresh water communities.

The red colours are indicative of the land-based communities.

Greens represent the great, grassy plains of Adelaide.

Women singing on the beach.

Blue dotted lines symbolise the river. The coming together of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous owners to create a company where success flows to benefit indigenous individuals, communities and companies. So too does the river flow across the country bringing benefit to all.

The fishermen as they sang to the sharks.

Concept

The artwork features four sets of intersecting circles representing the many communities Academy Services engages with, weaving in and out of the red central circle representing our company, symbolising a diverse network collaborating together.

Sid placed significant importance on acknowledging the original custodians of the land of Adelaide and the Barngarla people from whom Paul Brock is descended, while symbolising our corporate values and social responsibility.

Our Business

40 years of service excellence in commercial cleaningAcademy Services is a national commercial cleaning and facility services company established in 1979, with a long history of success, growth and service excellence. We apply our decades of experience and innovative systems to continually refine our approach to service delivery, focusing on what our clients desire most: quality, consistency and value.

Academy has a broad national reach with over 2,000 personnel across all states and territories, supported by offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Coupled with our diverse range of facility services, our geographic penetration affords us the capacity to service any organisation, irrespective of sector, size or location.

In 2016, we set the foundation for Academy Indigenous Services, a commercial cleaning company in partnership with Paul Brock, a descendant from the Barngarla people of the Whyalla and Port Augusta areas and an accomplished speaker, trainer, manager and business leader.

As the first step in delivering employment and leadership opportunities to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders within the community, we are first auditing existing personnel to evaluate our current levels of indigenous engagement and identify potential candidates for advancement.

Academy Indigenous Services is an exciting venture for our group and under the leadership of Paul Brock, we hope to contribute to the reconciliation movement by generating awareness of the social divide between Australians and providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders opportunities for employment, skills development and career development.

Our RAP

Academy is intent on driving Indigenous engagementAcademy Services aims to be a leader within our industry and across our community. We’re constantly seeking to innovate and strive towards delivering consistently better service outcomes for our clients through the adoption of integrated systems, the procurement of the highest standards of equipment and ongoing training for our personnel.

Similarly, we continually endeavour to advance our social programs to contribute to the community and we appreciate the value commercial organisations can create within our society .

At its core, Academy Services is a company with a belief in equality for all Australians and in providing opportunity and an improved quality of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the country. We recognise the value of Indigenous people and culture and acknowledge the hardships they face within our society.

Lead by the General Manager of Academy Services and the Managing Director of Academy Indigenous Services, our first RAP reflects the initial steps in our path towards reconciliation. There’s a long road ahead and we’re just beginning our own journey, but we hope the contributions of our company, and others like us, will help reduce the inequalities between Indigenous and mainstream Australians and move the nation forward towards a brighter future for all.

Additionally, we are involved in NAIDOC week events and are scheduled to participate in local events such as the annual Reconciliation SA Apology Breakfast and National Reconciliation Week celebrations beginning in May 2018.
