I’m pleased to have this opportunity to introduce myself to so many of you who have supported the Academy of Fine Arts and the upcoming restoration of the Academy of Music Theatre.

I say “upcoming” in light of the fact that the desire to bringour beautiful circa 1905 Beaux Arts concert hall back to life has been in the hearts of Lynchburg citizens for so many years... At long last this vision will, I promise you, become a reality at some point in the next few years. The time is right, the determination among civic leaders and the corporate community is now at its strongest, and the positive economic impact of historic theatre restoration is fully and inarguably recognized across the nation.

Arts and historic preservation nonprofits across this country have had a very, very rough time of it over the last decade, especially the last four years. Projects have been curtailed, staff have been cut to the bone and fundraising campaigns have been stalled within even the most prominent organizations.

In our case, however, things may have worked out the way they were supposed to. It’s quite possible that if the full restoration of the Academy of Music Theatre had been undertaken a decade earlier, the funding and the civic support may not have been there. But with the dramatic improvements in the downtown environment that have taken place in recent years, few if any can doubt the obvious benefit and common sense business logic of the theatre’s rebirth.

In the coming months you’ll see us inaugurate the most comprehensive campaign for funding that the AFA has ever launched. Integral to that appeal will be our outlining the benefits of what we, both you the donor and we the AFA team, have the potential to accomplish. Theatre restoration isn’t just an “arts” project. It’s about Positive Economic Impact – about a theatre providing solid and demonstrable return on investment through its ability to act as an unparalleled catalyst for downtown redevelopment, attraction of relocating businesses, attraction and retention of a qualified work force, increase in retail and tourist foot traffic, creation of jobs, generation of increased sales tax, the positives go on and on...

Perhaps most importantly, there are very few projects which enhance both the actual and the perceived quality of life factors of a town as much as the reopening of a historic theatre and its continued operation as a venue for national and internationally touring performing artists... and let me be frank...

This isn’t just public relations spin. This isn’t the excessive use of rose-colored glasses. This case has been proven time and time again, well over a hundred times in fact, in cities large and small across this nation. It’s a certified reality that carefully restoring and reopening theatres like the Academy of Music is a smart, responsible investment.

Remember... they don’t call it “show art,” they call it “show business.”

I feel enormously fortunate to have been welcomed to the AFA, because quite honestly, I don’t know of a more interesting project anywhere. I’ve been lucky enough to direct five theatre restorations, operate four as very successful concert halls, consult with over thirty such efforts and I served for many years on the board of the League of Historic American Theatres. In all those years and those thousands of miles travelled, I’ve never encountered a combination of an existing arts center already serving its community and enjoying that community’s respect, and the potential to open the doors to as beautiful an old theatre as ours. Not to mention a theatre of genuine and quite impressive historical signficance.

Stay tuned for details. I hope and trust that you’ll continue to stand by our side as we see to it that the dream of so many, for so long, becomes a reality.

Academy Empty Bowls By May Carter

LOTS of giving of time, clay, talents of all kinds, AND the gift of food: soups, bread and desserts EQUAL a wonderful, successful arts-based fundraising event at the Academy!

Four years ago the core group of potters in the Academy Pottery Studio and I undertook an Empty Bowls event. These are events sponsored all over the country with several components: handmade bowls are donated by potters are sold with a serving of soup and the beneficiary of the proceeds is always a program related to hunger issues. Daily Bread, Lynchburg’s downtown soup kitchen, became the organization benefiting from our event.

Donated bowls came from our studio potters, from community classes held on Saturdays in January and from generous potters in the Lynchburg area. Soups, breads, and desserts were donated by area restaurants and

bakeries. As a result, virtually all of our proceeds were donated to Daily Bread!

In past years, we had a respectable crowd, but there was always the feeling that we could get the word out better. This year, starting with an area realtor who bought many tickets to give to clients and ending with coverage by WSET and the News & Advance, the word did get out! There was a big crowd waiting for first choice of bowls before we even opened, and a record crowd happily strained our serving capacity. For the first time, we had table cloths and flower arrangements (thanks Lynn Shapiro) and we again had music (again donated by generous musicians).

Most of our bowls sold for $15. AND when all was said and done, we had sold well over 300 beautiful bowls and as a result, doubled our donation from last year. We were able to give $5200 to Daily Bread!

Due to this year’s success, the Academy Potters have pledged a bowl-a-month contribution so we can accumulate bowls throughout the year. And those special individuals who were involved this year are already planning for next year.

Put on your Sunday Clothes, Before the Parade Passes By, It Only Takes a Moment... These are just a few of the songs that have been bouncing around my head, since we chose Hello, Dolly! as our musical for this season. I went to rehearsal last night and now I am humming the title song Hello, Dolly! I love this musical; you will fall in love with Dolly Levi and her matchmaking antics.

In 1964, Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway, becoming the longest running musical of that time. Featuring a cast of Carol Channing, David Burns and Charles Nelson Reilly, the show was a huge success, adding 10 Tony Awards to the list of awards! Hello, Dolly! has become a crowd favorite.

In 1969, the show was so popular it was turned into a film. Directed by Gene Kelly and starring Barbara Streissand, it went on to receive 3 Academy Awards!

Now 48 years later, theatres across the world have been able to produce their own production of Hello, Dolly!

The Academy had auditions in January and the cast has been in rehearsals since February, sometimes rehearsing 5 nights a week. We are quickly gearing up for opening night! The set is being built as I type, the costumes are being gathered, the cast is busy in blocking rehearsals and we are nearing another opening of a great production. We have an excellent cast under the direction of an awesome Director and Creative Team. This show is going to be a smashing hit in Lynchburg!

WHY GIVE?

To support the arts! The AFA offers productions and workshops for youth. Teens experience contemporary music and dance from local and regional performers. College students and adults enjoy a wide range of comedy, contemporary, pop, traditional and world music. Broadway musicals, comedy, jazz, pop, dance, opera, chamber, symphony, country, gospel can be expected on any given weekend.

There are naming opportunities available in the lobby of the Arts & Education Center also! As the design work is completed for the historic theatre, lobbies, and Administration Building, additional opportunities will be created.
