Dear colleagues,

Once again we will honor the memory of our beloved master and teacher, Professor Nicolae Cajal, member of the Romanian Academy and prominent scientist of Romania.

The VIIth edition of the Acad. Nicolae Cajal Symposium has the same two main sections as the previous ones: Virology and Translational Medicine. An update and new developments in the two areas will be discussed during the meeting by prestigious lecturers from Romania and from abroad. Among them Prof. Akira Horii - Japan, Prof. Bin Tean Teh - Singapore, Assoc. Prof. Lance Munn - USA, Assist. Prof. Dan. G. Duda - USA, Dr. Florin Selaru - USA, Prof. Shai Izraeli - Israel, Prof. Thomas Michiels - Belgium, Prof. Stefan Constantinescu - Brussels, Prof. Rodica Anghel - Romania, Prof. Ioana Berindan - Romania etc.

Both Virology and Translational Medicine are areas with many hot topics for which there is an enormous interest. Therefore, the invitation to participate is addressed, as always, mainly to young scientists and, particularly, to the medical students.Among the most interesting topics are those related to the Hepatitis C and the pancreatic cancer. Both are diseases without an efficient cure and the later is uniformly lethal.

So, any progress could be a starting point for a major breakthrough that is expected for such a long time.

Translational medicine and research continues to be a developing area, constantly emphasizing the close relation between “bench” and “bed”. Most of the recent progress in medicine comes from such an integrated approach.

Organized by the “Nicolae Cajal” Foundation and the Romanian Academy in the very center of Bucharest (Intercontinental Hotel) the VIIth edition of the Symposium is waiting for you in a warm atmosphere and is promising a very high scientific level and fruitful debates.

Romanian School of Medicine was for Acad. Nicolae Cajal the second family. He loved both his teachers and his students and in his entire life and activity he worked to consolidate and promote the Romanian School of Medicine and to continuously educate the public opinion to respect life.

So, every year on the occasion of the Annual Symposium, we honor not only my father’s scientific career or the results of his studies but also the man he was and his love for life. The teacher, the researcher, the spiritual father, the academician and last but not least the CITIZEN Nicolae Cajal, loved people more then anything.

In the name of what my father meant for us all I suggest we act as an united family to make a better

Romanian School of Medicine every day and to make it exist further on with dignity and appreciated

performances.

I thank to all that make the dream of our father come true, Romanian School of Medicine needs to

serve both people and life.

Academician Nicolae Cajal Symposium 2012, the VIIth edition, wants to evaluate the barriers that delay the transposition of the recent discoveries of biomedical researches in therapeutic protocols and in the authorization of new medicine usage.

Starting from the example of Hepatitis B and C, we will analyze the value of some biomarkers that show which patient can be treated, which will react inappropriate, how we need to monitor the treatment and the negative reactions, the report cost - benefit of new medicine compared to the ones used in present treatments.

The organizing committee invites all specialists in clinical research to present their experience and their solutions to ameliorate the prophylactic treatment no only in infections pathologies but also in other fields of medical practice.

Irina CAJAL MARIN - President of Academician Nicolae Cajal Foundation.

Prof. Irinel Popescu - President of the Symposium

Prof. Costin Cernescu - President of the Symposium

HERBERT BERLER BARBU AWARDSHerbert Berler was born in 1915 in Viena and attended the law school at Cernauti University. With a great passion in the science, Herbert Berler felt the importance of Genetics, Immunogenetics and Molecular Biology and developed the outsider's vision with some of the greatest creators of school in Romania, among them Nicolae Cajal, at that time the co-founder of the Institute for Infra-Micro-Bilogy. The “Academician Nicolae Cajal” Foundation represents today the right forum to promote scientific talent, providing awards in the memory of Herbert Berler, as initiated by the family. Those two awards are meant for young and ambitious researchers that have the potential for significant contributions in the scientific fields they represent.
