9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The current Advertising major has three areas of emphasis — Creative Strategies, Interactive and Media, and Public

Relations. With the new Public Relations major (effective fall 2016), two areas would remain. The growing demand in

all areas of mass communication, including advertising, is for graduates with a wider range of skills sets. These changes

— adding two courses to the core, eliminating emphases, and allowing three elective courses — falls into line with this

demand and with other accredited advertising programs.

For all three of the majors (Advertising, Journalism, Public Relations), the Department has identified a consistent 41*

required credits (the range was 36 minimum in Journalism to 44 maximum in Advertising). The accreditation body

requires a minimum 72 credits outside of the Department. Previously, the minimum was set at 76 credits, but for various

reasons that threshold has been increasingly difficult to monitor and maintain. With 41 required credits for all three

majors, plus 72 credits outside the Department, there is now a consistent seven-credit leeway within the 120-credit

requirement to manage contingencies (such as the currently required first-year seminar credits through MCOM 109;

students who choose to major and minor within the Department; and so forth.)

*Note: In Advertising, this reflects 38 credits within the Department and three BADM credits, so the seven-credit “accreditation” leeway becomes

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The Department of Animal Science has reviewed the curriculum for the Animal Science (B.S.) – Business

& Production Specialization and Science Specialization. Revisions to the curriculum include:

Changed the title of the Business and Production Specialization to Industry Specialization. The

business electives have removed to allow students more flexibility in the customization of their

degree and pursuit of a minor.

Added ECON 201 – Principles of Microeconomics and ABS 203 – Global Food Systems to meet

the requirement for SGR3. This is in direct response to the call for global awareness in the

stakeholder survey.

Added more MATH classes as options to meet SGR5 in both specializations.

Added STAT 281 – Introduction to Statistics for all Science Specialization students in order to

build their ability to critically evaluate data and information. The department has engaged in

discussions on potential collaborations with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics on

animal science or agriculture specific sections. This also accommodates many Animal Science

majors with the Science Specialization who intend to pursue veterinary school, as many require a

statistics course.

Revised AS 489 – Current Issues in Animal Science, 2 credits to AS 389 and to 3 credits in order

to better prepare students earlier in their curriculum. Students have typically taken AS 489 in their

final 2 semesters at SDSU. The course is designed to meet the Advanced Writing Requirement

and covers skills necessary for independent research, critical evaluation of sources, presentation

of research, discussion of current issues, resume development, interview skills and other written

and oral communication. The move to a 300 level course will encourage students to take it earlier

in their college career and allow them to further utilize the job preparatory skills for internships

and post-graduation careers. It will also provide an expectation that students taking 400-level

capstone courses will have had training in evaluation of sources and understanding current

research articles.

Added an experiential learning requirements for all Animal Science majors. Students often

graduate with a strong foundational content knowledge. However, based on stakeholder

feedback, they are often unprepared for application of this knowledge in the workforce. The

Experiential Learning credit will allow students to gain practical experience applying their

knowledge and building their skill set prior to entering the workforce.

Added ACCT 210 – Principles of Accounting as a required course for all Animal Science

students. The additional of a financial literacy requirement will prepare students for the

workforce by equipping them with a basic understanding of financial documents.

Added AGEC 354 – Ag Marketing and Prices as a required course for all students pursuing the

Industry Specialization.

Modified the number and name of AS 323 – Advanced Animal Nutrition to AS 219 – Principles

of Animal Nutrition and offer the course only once per year. Currently students take AS 233 –

Applied Animal Nutrition then AS 323 – Advanced Animal Nutrition with AS 233 being a

prerequisite for AS 323. However, discussions with the nutrition faculty clearly outlined a need

ATTACHMENT I 10

Page 11: ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COUNCIL - sdbor.edu · Interactive and Media Emphasis 12 MCOM 225-225L Social Media Design & Lab 3 ADV 372-372L Advertising Media Strategies & Lab 3 MCOM 331-331L

for an understanding of basic nutrition concepts prior to progressing into application. Historically,

these two courses were offered with the principles course preceding the applied course. The order

of the courses was reversed to accommodate non-majors that did not need both courses. That

need is recognized as legitimate and will be addressed by developing a new course for non-

majors (AS 218 – Animal Nutrition for Non-Majors).

Modified the number and name of AS 233 – Applied Animal Nutrition to AS 319 - Livestock

Feeds and Feeding and reduce the course to 3 credits. The course may be able to be offered once

per year depending on laboratory teaching assistants.

Modified the number of AS 345-345L – Value-Added Meat Products and Lab to AS 445 –

Value-Added Meats and Lab. This course has been proposed as a capstone course and the number

change reflects that status.

Modified the number of AS 350 – Meat Product Safety and HACCP to AS 450 – Meat Product

Safety and HACCP. This course has been proposed as a capstone course and the number and

prerequisite changes reflect that status.

Modified the number of AS 365-365L – Horse Production and Lab to AS 476 – Horse Production

and Lab. This course has been proposed as a capstone course and the number and prerequisite

changes reflect that status.

Modified the number of AS 433-433L – Livestock Reproduction to AS 333 – Livestock

Reproduction. This course has been proposed as a prerequisite for the capstone courses AS 474,

477, and 478. The revised course number will encourage students to take the course earlier in

their academic careers.

Proposed:

A grade of “C” or better is required in PSYC 101, ENGL 101, SPCM 101, MATH 102, and all major

courses with an EDFN, HDFS or ECE prefix.

Students must meet all GPA Requirements (2.6 for graduation, 2.8 in major courses including ECE,

HDFS, and EDFN) and be accepted into the ECE Teacher Education program/ECE PSI and ECE-PS II.

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The proposed changes to the Cooperative Elementary Education Specialization with DSU & NSU, the Birth to

5 (B-5) Specialization, and the Birth to 8 (B-8) Specialization are based on the following: 1) With less than 10%

of Early Childhood Education students enrolled in the Birth to 5 Specialization it is no longer feasible to offer

the program as currently designed and delivered. 2) The proposed curriculum plan embeds courses required for

the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Endorsement. This revision will educate teacher candidates on

how to be inclusive of the needs of all learners and is supported by the Collaboration for Effective Educator

Development, Accountability and Reform (CEEDAR) Center. 3) The changes will allow for additional courses

to be offered more frequently to accommodate students’ needs and to allow for more direct relationship with

field experiences. Courses that are no longer going to be offered at SDSU will be phased out as new courses are

introduced. Another benefit of the revised curriculum is more manageable faculty workloads. The curriculum

will allow for all courses to be taught each term with the faculty available, reduce student issues with

matriculation and advising, and provide more cohesive program content.

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE:

This curriculum request is a response to the credit hour change in the Intermediate French I &II

Classes. The department of Modern Language and Global Studies, in collaboration with the

University of South Dakota and Northern State University, work to align language curriculum,

including making the 201 and 202 classes consistent at 3 credits cross languages (SPAN, GER,

FREN, LAK). Reducing 201 and 202 by two credits necessitates an increase in elective French

credits in order to keep the minor at 18 credits.

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: These changes expand the common core in broadcast and news-editorial journalism to reflect the broader skill set

today’s journalists need.

With 41 required credits for all three

majors, plus 72 credits outside the Department, there is now a consistent seven-credit leeway within the 120-credit

requirement to manage contingencies (such as the currently required first-year seminar credits through MCOM 109;

students who choose to major and minor within the Department; and so forth.)

Requiring students to select a narrow emphasis versus the previous unstructured minor enables

students outside of the department to develop in-depth skills in one of the four specialized areas.

This change will bring the minor in line with the BOR guidelines for minors.

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The Department of Sociology and Rural Studies is requesting a substantive change in the Ph.D. program.

The department requests these changes for three reasons. First, at the suggestion of the Dean and the recent

outside review team, the department is undertaking a self-study in preparation for an Accreditation visit

from the Commission on the Accreditation of Programs in Applied and Clinical Sociology. The changes

will make the current department practices in regard to student advising and course offering consistent with

the Accreditation Standards. Second, the outside review team specifically suggested several changes to the

program including the reduction of dissertation credits and the formalization of the procedures in regard to

the student practice or internship experience. Third, in reviewing the current research on graduate programs,

the department has seen a clear change in the type of students who enroll in Ph.D. programs and the careers

they are interested in pursuing as more job opportunities emerge in the private and non-profit research,

evaluation, and policy sectors. The changes will not only allow the department to better serve the students

seeking careers in those sectors but also enhance the ability to educate more traditional students interested

in pursuing academic careers.

The department recommends the following changes to the curriculum:

Add SOC 707 Sociological Practice and Public Policy (3). This is an advanced course in the

history, issues, theories, and methods of sociological practice; the social and political issues

involved in sociological practice will also be covered.

Add SOC 794 Internship (6-12) or SOC 726 Teaching Sociology I (2), SOC 727 Teaching Sociology

II (1-3), SOC 738 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning I (2), and SOC 739 Scholarship of

Teaching and Learning II (1-3). The accreditation standards require we offer two sequences for

applied and practical experience. Students must complete a practice internship related to applied or

practical sociology OR complete the teaching sociology/SOTL courses and related practica. Thus,

students will be able to pursue either the practice experience with the current internship course or

a teaching sociology track with SOC 726, SOC 727, SOC 738 and SOC 739. Students taking the

practice track may also complete the teaching coursework as part of their electives.

Reduce SOC 898D Dissertation from 18 to 12 credits in keeping with current practice in the field

and the recommendations of the outside review committee.

Reduce electives from 23 to 14-20 credits.

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The College of Arts and Sciences has reviewed the curriculum for the minor in Women’s Studies. The proposed

changes in title, program structure, and course offerings, reflect an emphasis on Women’s Studies and the

investigation of how gender is socially and culturally constructed. The elective list has been modified to allow

students to select courses that relate to their interests and career focus in women’s and gender studies.

The student learning outcomes are as follows:

Students will develop an understanding of gender as a social and cultural construct informed by race,

ethnicity, class, sexuality and nationality.

Students will develop an ability to identify and analyze female perspectives and experiences, and links

to cultural expectations.

Students will develop the ability to conduct research, including selecting a research topic that relates to

Women’s and Gender Studies, conducting secondary research, identifying gaps in the prior research,

developing research questions, and completing original research.

Students will develop the ability to analyze how institutions and policies affect female experiences.
