    THE PROBLEM

    Declining quality of

    new employees, aka

    FRESH GRADS

    INCREASING COSTS

    i. Increased need for

    additional training

    ii. Low supply of quality

    preparation due to lack

    of time

    Declining quality

    of higher

    education

    Low quality of

    incoming college

    students

    Mismatch in education

  • 1. Focus NOT on projects and programs

but on policy and institutional reforms

    2. Sustained and continuous advocacy,

    independent of political administration

    3. Continuous emphasis on the

    importance of education

    4. Build partnerships and unity (within

    sector and among sectors)

    CURRICULUM

    REFORM: K12

  • HIGHER EDUCATION REFORM

  • THE MISMATCH

BICOL UNIVERSITY 4th INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC COLLOQUIUM

  • THE MISMATCH

  • THE MISMATCH:

    Three problems, not one

    1. Finding the right job & therefore the

    right course

    2. Developing the correct competencies

    a. General competencies

    b. Specific competences

    3. Getting the right people into the right

    job

  • GENERAL COMPETENCIES

    FIRST!!

    • Skills that are missing (PMAP Study)

    – Ability to communicate

    – Critical thinking & Problem solving skills

    – Independent thinking

    – Confidence

    • McKinsey Survey: Employers cite work ethic and teamwork as most important skill in almost every country

other is looking for and what each

    one can offer (standardized tests

    and certificates)

    Strong relationships between

schools and companies (not only at

    the end of the program)

    Company relationships begin early

  • LEARNINGS

BICOL UNIVERSITY 4th INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC COLLOQUIUM

  • LEARNINGS

    1. We must accept that as simple a thing as bringing

people together involves a change of mindset of

    all sectors

    2. Informal relationships are as important as formal

relationships and they must be multi-level

    3. Need to develop social trust (within sectors and

    among sectors)

    4. Need to be organized at national AND local levels

    5. Government needs to be involved but maybe

    should not take the lead

    6. Will involve policy reform

  • THANK YOU!! Education is everyone’s

    business
