If each of us volunteers just four hours per year, we would have more than enough help to support all of our club functions. At our Feburary meeting I will be asking you to help out by signing up to participate in or coordinate an event this year. Just a half a day turning tops, setting up tables at events or handing out club brochures will go a long way to help support the club. So please step up and help out where you can. Looking forward this year, we have many exciting events planned, starting with the Nick Agar all day demo in March, followed closely by Woodfest in Sedro Woolley. Also, we are planning for a Tool Exchange and Sale at our April meeting. 1

January Program Recap

As President of your club, I am always open and available to hear your thoughts on how we canimprove the club’s activities and programs. Please feel free to reach out at the meetings orthrough email.

I invite you to help me and the Board in making 2020 a fun and satisfying year in woodturning.

Regards,

President's Letter (Cont'd)

Talk about bad timing. Just when we were ready to get back into the swing of things after anearly two month break, an arctic blast brought frigid winds, snow and ice at precisely thewrong time. For the first time in anyone's recollection, we were forced to CANCEL the Januarymeeting.

BUMMER!

The good news is that our scheduled presenter, John Shrader, is from the Seattle area and haskindly agreed to re-schedule his demo for later in the year. You won't miss out on hearing andseeing him as he shows us his techniques for silver (and other metal) inlays -- it will just takeplace when the roads are less hazardous.

3

February 20, 2020 - Our guest will be Dale Larson ofGresham, OR. Dale has been an active turner for morethan 40 years, and is a past President of the AAW. He isbest known for turning bowls from Pacific Northwesthardwoods like madrone and big leaf maple. He is afrequent demonstrator at AAW Symposiums and hastaught at Arrowmont and the John C Campbell FolkSchool. On Thursday evening he will be discussing anddemonstration turning spheres by eye.

March 19, 2020 - In addition to providing our annual All-Day Demo, Nick Agar will also be the presenter at ourThursday evening meeting. It is likely he will be creating abronzed bowl, although the exact nature of his demo hasnot yet been disclosed. But Nick has such a well-earnedreputation for producing beautifully crafted art and alsofor providing great demonstrations that it hardly matters. You are sure to have an enjoyable time while you pick uptips from a virtuoso turner.

Of interest, Nick will also be conducting two classes inMarch -- one on textured bowls and another on ceramicrimmed platters. Stay tuned for further info.

April 16, 2020 - As per what has become tradition, thismonth we will be meeting at the Burlington CommunityCenter. Also per tradition, our own NWW mentors willbe in charge of developing an entertaining andworthwhile meeting for you.

Shop Tours in 2020?

Wood turning is multifaceted in many ways such asitems turned (bowls, platters, boxes, pens, etc.),mediums used (e.g. various wood species, bone, antler, etc), Tools (chainsaws, lathes, bandsaws, gouges, skews, etc). The shops that our memberswork, play and possibly live in are equallymultifaceted in terms of space, arrangement, fixtures, jigs, tools, equipment, lighting, heating, storage, etc. That being said, the purpose of shoptours is for members to learn from members bysharing ideas on how members have overcomelimitations (space, cost, etc.) across the many facetsof shops and furthering camaraderie betweenmembers.

The board has discussed shop tours previously butthe action has been limited to discussion. So hereis a potential opportunity to expand and share yourknowledge about the various facets of woodturners’ shops. It is evident and proven by thiswriters experience that the shop hosts can learn asmuch as those visiting and the host can visit othershops as well. So here is the concept for shoptours:

1. To be conducted on a Saturday morning with a maximum of three shops to be visited.

2. The shop hosts are identified by geographic region (Bellingham, Mt Vernon, etc) so the traveltime between shops is minimal.

3. Once hosts are identified and correlated to a region, a common Saturday is determinedalong with approximate times and a common starting point to meet for potential carpooling.

4. Any member can sign up for the tour at a club meeting.

5. The learning begins.

Editor's Note: Since the January meeting was cancelled, we arere-running this piece and will discuss it at our Feb meeting.

Wood Bequest

The late Donald V. Daniels, an accomplished woodturnerfor over 20 years, had made it known to his wife Rubythat he wished to bequeath his supply of turning wood tofellow woodturners in the community. It is a pleasure toannounce that in honoring Don's wishes, Ruby haschosen NWW as the recipient of his wood collection.

Don was a creative turner who enjoyed trying his hand atmany different aspects of woodturning. As shown inthese photos, Don had extraordinary talent andsuccessfully mastered a wide variety of turning skills.

We are most grateful to Don and Ruby Daniels for thismost generous donation.

Know Your Woods

Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens), sometimes called Europeanboxwood or common boxwood, is native to Europe, NWAfrica, and SW Asia. It can reach 10-25 ft in height, with a 4-6 inch trunk diameter. It is commonly used in topiary.

Heartwood tends to be a light cream to yellow, which canslightly darken with prolonged exposure to light. Sapwoodnot distinct from heartwood. The wood has a fine, eventexture with a natural luster. The grain tends to be straight orslightly irregular.

Boxwood is somewhat difficult to work in flat dimensions, though it is superbly suited for turning. The wood's ability tohold crisp edges make it one of the best woods for handthreading. It has a slight blunting effect on tools.

Boxwood is usually only available in small quantities andsizes, and can be very expensive. The tree's diminutive sizerestricts it to smaller projects. Some common uses includecarvings, chess pieces, musical instruments (flutes, recorders, woodwinds, etc), rulers, handles, decorative turned objectsand other small specialty items.

Turning on the Web* ...

*The internet contains a wealth of information of value to woodturners. Some is direct “how to”articles and videos ...other resources provide inspiration and techniques which can be applied to ourcraft. But remember, the internet is unedited, so beware of poor and unsafe techniques.
