NEW Design Talk MONEY

Investments – Going GreenWe are all becoming more aware of the impact we are having on the world. We are happily recycling, we donate money to charities to help nature and the environment and we are all concerned with global warming. Many people take this concern one step further by literally investing for the future of our planet; often known as ethical or green investment. Many of us have money in a personal pension, a bond, ISA or unit trust. The money will be invested in funds, managed by fund managers. The money will be pooled with that of other investors and used to by assets which should hopefully make your money grow. Normally, this will include shares in companies, in the UK and sometimes abroad.

The companies in your investment funds could be dealing in gas, oil, arms, tobacco or pharmaceuticals; in essence you could be supporting companies which are going against your moral beliefs. It is always difficult to dig below the surface and find out, and it is even more difficult if you want to avoid investment into certain companies or areas of investments, especially as the investment will be changing as time goes on.How to invest ethically;Large life companies and fund managers know that people are concerned, and many have now launched “ethical funds”. These funds can put your mind at rest that you are investing in the right place. The funds can be accessed via an ISA, pension or other investments.

How do the funds invest? There are two main ways;Negative screening: The fund manager would avoid investments in companies whose activities are deemed to be negative. This process is used by most UK ethical fund managers.Positive screening: The fund manager would invest in companies who are involved in projects with a positive social or environmental impact, things such as waste management or renewable energy. The manager would literally screen in companies who are doing good in the world. These funds are often known as green funds. How to access the funds;Depending which provider you have your investment with, they may have ethical funds available. If you have taken no advice for some time, a full review would be advisable, you should contact an Independent Financial Adviser who can contact your current providers and get all of the relevant information,

then advising you on the best course of action.

If you would like to discuss any of the above, for ethical investments or a full financial review, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. Email: [email protected] Web: www.talkmoney.co.uk

But do you know where your money is invested?

Paul Zara is a director of architects Conran and Partners who have been involved in the restoration of Embassy Court

[email protected]

There’s an old lady that sits on Brighton seafront all year round. She’s nearly eighty but doesn’t look it. She’s had a bit of work done over the years. In her youth she was the most glamorous creature on the south coast, but time

catches up with us all and the cracks begin to show. In this case the cracks are in the concrete and the make up is some very expensive paint! Embassy Court is a Grade 2* listed building, designed by the architect Wells Coates, a leading modernist architect of the 1930s. And in its day the building was the most radical and the most luxurious creation the English seaside had ever seen.

All flats have sea views overlooking Hove lawns and, in the words of the sales brochure ‘in style it is unaffectedly of the New Age of Health and Light - it makes no concession to any other period of architecture than that of today and tomorrow’. It wasn’t meant to fit in, it was all about showing off. The flats all had sun rooms so that you could enjoy the sea area but avoid the wind. The 9th and 10th floors were set back to create sun terraces. Allegedly these were the first penthouses in the UK! And all residents could use the sun deck on the top floor. If you ever get a chance to visit it, do so. The views are some of the best in the city. Originally the flats were heavily serviced, with a concierge, bell hops, and meals served in the flats by ‘well groomed waiters’. You could hire experienced servants for one shilling per hour and the six lifts all had private letter boxes which would be emptied several times a day by the good old GPO. With rents of between £125 and £500 per annum these were flats for the very wealthy.

The current work on the building had been all about repainting and improving the windows. It’s a constant battle against the wind and the rain, as anyone who lives on the seafront knows. But when you walk past, listen carefully and you might just here the sound of wealthy socialites dancing the night away on the roof terrace, while the chauffeurs slept quietly in the basement, with the maids a safe distance away in their rooftop dormitory.

Once a coach house, it has an impressive exterior with wide iron gates opening onto a pretty courtyard.Inside the bright, spacious rooms have modern touches mixed with the house’s historic architectural features. Time for ‘red tape’ government to rethink landlord immigration plan As a Brighton solicitor who works closely with the city’s landlords, my phone lit up following the Queen’s Speech in which it was announced the Government would introduce legislation requiring landlords to be responsible for ensuring tenants are not illegal immigrants.

Tackling immigration is of course a priority, but this so called policy has caused a great deal of concern. Why?

The decision to make landlords responsible for checking tenant identities was not extensively trailed and there does not seem to have been very much consultation. Indeed, it came as a complete surprise to all letting agents to whom I have spoken.

We are constantly told by this government that they are cutting red tape, but on the face of it, this policy will impose yet more arduous regulation on landlords and letting agents.

Not for the first time we have a proposal that will actually generate more work for private companies and individuals, not less.

I am also not alone in thinking this is another example of the government delegating responsibility and liability for something that should be a function of Whitehall, not taxpayers.

Landlords, via their letting agents, will be required to challenge identities which will involve searches and other legal requirements, all of which will take time and money with no recompense from central government. Surely it is the government’s job to vet illegal immigrants, not landlords.

Much of the concern over this announcement has focused on how landlords and letting agents are expected to enforce it. Should they challenge all holders of non-EU passports? What happens if someone with an Australian passport on a long European stay applies for a six month let for example? Should he or she be treated as an illegal immigrant?

We will wait to see the nature of legislation that may follow the Queen’s Speech but many feel this is simply a knee jerk reaction to those who are critical of the government’s current immigration enforcement.

Many people in the industry are considering whether the government should be more consistent in following its own policy statements about making life easier for businesses, and therefore should rethink this proposal.

Marine Drive

Absolute NEW Homes

Generator Developments is pleased to announce construction has commenced on a collection of nine spacious, luxury apartments with spectacular sea views on Marine Drive in Rottingdean, East Sussex.James Barnes, Development Director, comments: “Marine Drive is a great addition to our expanding portfolio in the South of England. We have chosen Brett Construction as the contractor for the project and are pleased construction is underway and on schedule. The property was originally acquired with planning permission for six apartments and two town houses. We did not consider the permission maximised the sites full potential and, following detailed negotiations with Brighton & Hove Council, we secured a resolution to grant planning for nine luxury apartments all of which benefit from stunning sea views.”

Set to launch later this year, the two and three bedroom apartments are each individually designed to a high specification. Occupying a commanding position looking out over the English Channel, the homes all have large private balconies, along with secure basement parking. Marine Drive is situated within easy walking distance of the centre of the historic village of Rottingdean, just a few miles east of Brighton.

KITCHEN - The Heart of the Home

We probably spend more time in the kitchen than anywhere else in the home - “it really is the heart of the home”. It is the hub of family life. With this in mind today’s kitchen manufacturers have built

kitchens that are not only aesthetically pleasing but are both practical and innovative.

A new kitchen is a major investment in a home and designers and manufacturers of kitchens have come to realise that there is a change in recent years in the way we use the most important room in the house. It has now become the main living area in most homes with space for eating, relaxing, entertaining, even working as well as a place for the preparation and cooking food. So it becomes important that the kitchen you choose is well-planned and fitted to accommodate all your needs.

All kitchen designs fall into two categories; traditional and modern. A contemporary kitchen will make a good backdrop for all the latest gadgets and appliances, while a more traditional kitchen may still have all the latest technology and gadgetry but discreetly concealed within the appliances. The key lies in the seamless integration into the design of your kitchen.

The traditional kitchen is usually structured around the ‘working triangle’. This means that the sink, cooker and fridge are positioned to form the points of a triangle. This will allow you to move easily between them. However, in open plan spaces you may want to exchange the working triangle in favour of ‘zoning’. Many kitchen designers prefer this method. Zoning involves setting up certain areas for different activities, by dedicating spaces and facilities for food preparation, cooking, dining, relaxing and entertaining. Combining all

these facilities does mean keeping these areas clean and uncluttered and therefore well-planned storage and layout is essential.

When choosing your kitchen there are lots of points to consider; doors, worktops, splash backs, all have to be durable in order to cope with the brunt of kitchen activities.

The Kitchen is a country in which there are always discoveries to be made.

25

DoorsThere are a wide variety of doors available from natural wood to faux timber as well as modern synthetics such as parapan - a strong solid acrylic for a hygienic, wipe clean finish.

WorktopsToday’s worktops come in many different materials. Most popular worktops seem to be granite as it is tough and stain resistant. Many of our kitchen suppliers offer granite in a range of colours with a plain or patterned grain. Alternative to stone include: concrete, stainless steel, corian and timber.

Splash BacksSplash backs are vital in the kitchen. Tiles are still a favourite but if you prefer surface without joints consider using glass, stainless steel, composite or laminate up-stands and panels, alternatively if you prefer timber then well-sealed timber panels can look very appealing.

Appliances Fixtures and FittingsThe most important factor to consider is whether the appliances are to be hidden or on show. Integrated fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing machines can all be concealed behind matching cabinet doors while free-standing models can become a centrepiece in a more classical setting - like a high-tech fridge or an enamelled Aga.

Good extraction is also essential in any kitchen. Other than the traditional canopy, the downdraught extraction is a more recent concept, built into the work-surface and rising up at the touch of a button when needed then back down into the worktop after use.

When it comes to fixtures and fittings there are plenty of options to make life simpler, such as pop-up sockets, boiling water taps, even multiple re-cycling waste bins to help you to efficiently sort rubbish at source.

The equipment you choose for your kitchen should suit your lifestyle, so it is important to take time to consider the newest fittings and appliances and decide which are right for you.

Whether you are looking for a modern or traditional kitchen visit your local kitchen showrooms to see the latest materials and finishes being used to transform today’s kitchens into great living spaces.

Into the GARDEN

Of all the flowers in the garden the rose simply is the aristocrat of the quintessential English garden.

SOME OF MY FAVOURITE ROSES

Rosa - ‘Comte de Chambered’Double scented lilac - pink flowers. Flowering from summer to autumn.

Rosa - ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ A shrub rose with scented deep pink flowers. Flowering from summer to autumn.

Rosa - ‘Blush Noisette’ An enchanting rose. Producing a continuous display of semi - double pink - white flowers, flushed with lilac. Blooms are beautifully scented smelling of cloves. This is also suitable for small gardens.

With the arrival of glorious June, spring slips away and as summer gathers pace. June is the month when all the hard work you did before in the garden, begins to be rewarded. This is

when the garden is truly in bloom.

June brings with it the quintessential fragrant English rose. Although we have come to associate the enchanting rose with English summertime, many varieties flower until September or at least until the first frosts. So the beauty of this flower, can provide our gardens with colour and scent into autumn. Few plants bloom as much and as long as roses.

There is a rose for every garden no matter how small. even a patio can have miniature roses in pots and there are an extensive range of ‘Patio roses’ many ideal for small gardens or pots. Other than these roses there are many other varieties to choose from; upright bushes, climbers or ramblers. All these come in a wide range of colour, size and shape.

Climbing roses are particularly lovely for arches and pergolas or for an old wall. They also have larger flowers, and strong stems that make a good framework. It is good to remember that climbers re-flower whereas ramblers only flower once.

Looking after your roses will reward you with not only beautiful, fragrant blooms but also add a touch of glamour to your entire garden.

June is a good time to sprinkle fertiliser around the roots of roses for strong healthy growth and a good display of flowers. It is important to keep them well watered and given plenty of sun, at least six hours of sun a day. Another point to remember is that roses like to breathe so do not plant them too close to each other as this will result in the leaves getting mildew.

Summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words

in the English language.Henry James (1843-1916)

Instant Boiling Water Taps – the pros and prosYou may have seen them appearing on Masterchef or the Great British Bake Off recently as every workstation is now equipped with them. They are the latest must have gadget in the kitchen and for good reason – the Instant Boiling Water Tap is here to stay!Safety:An instant boiling water tap is actually

safer than a kettle as you can’t knock them or pull them over. All the taps have safety devices on them – you can’t just turn them on. Some have an aerated flow so that they don’t scald even though they are delivering 100°C water instantly. Efficiency:Independent research shows that a kettle boiled 10 times a day is 58% less energy efficient than a Quooker boiling water tap. That adds up to a substantial saving in energy costs year on year. Uses:Imagine instant boiling water for vegetables, pasta and rice and you will be using less gas or electricity to heat the water; instant hot water for washing up; instant help with sterilising, hot water bottles, blanching vegetabless as well as no longer waiting for teas and coffees at home or in the office. We have a full range of working Boiling Water taps in our showroom.

Kinetico Water SoftenersThe water in Sussex is particularly hard due to the high levels of chalk in the area. A water softener will remove the calcium and magnesium particles leaving you with lovely soft water throughout your home.

There are many benefits to having a water softener installed in this area:Save up to £450 a year:Use up to 75% less soaps and detergents. Good news for the environment and your pocket too!A greener home:Save up to 25% on energy bills thanks to washing machines, boilers and hot-water cylinders

remaining more efficient. Pipes with just ¼” limescale build up in them can increase energy consumption by 38%. A water softener will also remove any limescale build up that you already have in your home.Spend less time cleaning:Keep your tiles and shower-screen free from limescale and banish watermarks from taps, sinks and toilets.Smooth skin & soft, silky hair:You can make your bathroom feel like a home spa as you will have soft, silky skin and hair everyday.Softer, brighter looking clothes:Softened water removes residual impurities making your clothes feel softer and look brighter for longer.Increase the life of your water using appliances:Washing machines, kettles and dishwashers work better for longer when using softened water.Alleviate eczema and dry skin conditions:Eczema, psoriasis and dry skin can respond positively to softened water.

UKh2o are your local water treatment specialists and the Authorised Kinetico Dealer for the South-East of England. Call us now to arrange a free home demo where you can taste, see and feel the benefits of soft water in your home.

I am struggling with the words to describe the new BMW M6 Convertible – bonkers is a word that readily comes to mind but

in truth, it’s much more than that. It’s sexy, it’s sleek and it’s very, very fast.

This flagship of the famous M series is a stunning piece of automotive engineering and l would need five pages to list the technological gadgets that lie beneath its beautiful skin. But to mention a few, the head up display that projects your speed and the road’s speed limit onto the windscreen is something that should be fitted to every car immediately; the reversing camera likewise; the i-Drive computer with a 10.2 inch screen is now much more user friendly and you no longer need a 2.1 from Oxbridge

to use it and oh, the noise. The exhaust note from this 4.4 litre twin turbo charged engine that produces 560 bhp and takes you from 0-60 in 4.3 seconds, made me grin like a 5 year old, and whilst belting through the Cuilfail Tunnel in Lewes, l actually turned round at the A27 and did it again – believe me, it’s addictive when the roofs down. The only time you might not want to repeat said manoeuvre, is when you foolishly glance down at the fuel gauge – a fixed grin this time but for totally different reasons. It boasts a combined consumption of 27.4 mpg but to get that l think you would have to drive like my granny. If you drive it as it is designed to be driven, and believe me the temptation is irresistible, then l think you could half that but as they say – if you

have to ask what it does to the gallon, you can’t afford it in the first place and at £99,020.00 for the standard model, never a truer word said. And before you ask, l don’t know what the £20 is for either but l bet if you turned up with cash, they would reduce it to ‘only’ £99,000!

The car BMW kindly loaned me had over £12,000.00 worth of options, such as Merino Leather (£5635), M Sport seats (£1865) and 20 inch alloys (£1650) – you get where l am going with this – the car and the extras are all rather expensive but, and it is a huge but – it is a gob smacking car come fighter jet that accelerates fast enough to detach your retinas, corners on rails and did l mention the noise?

Is any car really worth the price of a small flat? Well, no of course not but then again yes. Would l rather have a dingy flat in Hanover or an amazing M6 – all l can say is that you can sleep in an M6 but you cannot drive a flat, no one will gawp at you in the window of your flat and neither will it make you smile like a manic child on Ritalin!

I can’t afford £99,020.00, but having just searched the web, l found a transplant clinic in Mumbai offering £100,000 for healthy western kidneys – you have two kidneys but there is only one M6. Mumbai here l come…..

LIKE: The noise; acceleration; superb quality; decent rear seats.

DISLIKE: The price; Stop/start system; the fact that l can’t afford one.

It has been a remarkable week for Jaguar as two of its prestigious models - the Jaguar XF executive saloon and the Jaguar XJ luxury saloon - receive recognition from national newspaper The Daily Telegraph and specialist automotive publication Diesel Car.At the inaugural Telegraph Motoring Awards, the Jaguar XF beat competition from other premium car manufacturers to claim the Best Executive Car award, while the all-aluminium Jaguar XJ was named Best Luxury Car ahead of several more expensive competitor models.

RARE BEETLE JAGUAR AWARDFor the first time, UK Volkswagen Beetle fans can order the legendary GSR model, some 40 years after the original Beetle GSR made its debut in the European market.Unveiled earlier in 2013, the Beetle GSR has a unique design and powerful 210 PS turbocharged engine. A real limited edition, just 3,500 of these cars will be made worldwide and 100 of them are being offered to UK customers. The GSR has a legendary predecessor, the ‘Yellow-Black Racer’ which was based on the Beetle 1303 S and made its debut 40 years ago.

GOOD WOOD REVIVALOn the 50th anniversary of the first of his two Formula 1 World Championship victories, this year’s Goodwood Revival annual driver tribute will be to the legendary Scottish racer Jim Clark. A daily track parade at the Goodwood Motor Circuit will include a variety of Jim’s most famous cars. The track parade will feature a wealth of famous competition cars. Clark achieved success in single-seaters, sports, GT and saloon cars, and even turned his hand to rallying, setting fastest stage times on the 1966 RAC Rally in a Lotus-Cortina. The track parade will read like a shopping list of great racing cars from the 1960’s.

Morris, Triumph, Austin, Reliant – these are names of iconic British car manufacturers that many of us grew up with and that are

sadly deceased, although it must be said that upon reflection, some of the models they produced were only ever destined for the dustbin of history. The Triumph Stag for example – a great looking car that was as reliable as a North Korean rocket launch, as rusty as a bucket of nails with a warranty that expired as you drove out of the showroom!

But MG is a marque remembered fondly by most that owned one – who of a certain age group did not own or covet an MGB-GT; or laugh hysterically as you shot up a hill climb in an MG Midget; or suddenly awoke to the enduring addiction of V8’s in the MGB-V8. Sadly, the company founded by Cecil Kimber in 1920 ran out of puff in 1988 and was sold to British Aerospace, then to BMW in 1994 and finally went bust on April 7th 2005. The final chapter of the story, or the first chapter in the new story, took shape in July 2005, when the Chinese Nanjing Automobile Group purchased the rights to the MG name and all remaining assets for £53 million and created MG Motor.

So MG lives on to the joy of all British petrol heads but what of the first new model to carry that iconic badge, the MG6. The marketing blurb calls this a ‘sports-fastback’ and is in fact a rival to the Ford Focus and it’s kind and is currently available with a turbocharged 1.8 litre petrol engine with a five speed manual gearbox or a 1.9 diesel with a 6 speed box. It is quite a good looking car and l especially like the front

end that has quite an aggressive stance. Inside you are confronted by a well laid out interior with large clear dials and a very good colour screen that combines a sat nav and a multi-media interface. There is good legroom both front and back, considerably more than the Golf or Focus and a 60/40 split rear bench that offers plenty of load space. The boot will take 472 litres which is again far more than its rivals. The let down in the driver’s seat, and l admit it’s a small niggle, is the daft handbrake. Obviously a ‘cool’ design feature but it is an odd shape and not at all easy to grab without pinching your fingers and there’s also a silly cup holder that shoots out sideways and really takes two hands to operate – design over function, me thinks!

Standard equipment includes stability control, front and side airbags, A/C, electric windows, alloy wheels, deadlocks and a fully integrated stereo that will make thieves lives a tad more difficult.

The MG6 is quite a spirited drive and is stable in corners although it does suffer a tad from turbo lag but give it a boot and off it goes with a smooth gear change and impressive stability although a little too much wind noise for my liking. It cannot be classified as a hot hatch but is certainly a well sorted family hatchback. Economy is reasonable if not stunning with 37.7 mpg and a top speed limited to 120 mph. The entry price is £16,995 and that’s a lot of car for the money when you consider what other full size hatchbacks cost.

There is one thing that might propel the MG6 to the front of your mind when buying – the badge. When asked what you drive, there is little pride in answering

Skoda or Ford but stating that you have an MG certainly brings a little pride to the voice.

It’s been a long time since anyone could say that they have a new MG, built and designed in the UK, and with the range comprising the MG6, Magnette and the all-new MG3 launching this week at the Shanghai Motor Show, love it or hate it, the badge is back.

There were always happy memories at

Arundel for me. I used to do my warm-

Tony CotteyOur monthly column from the Sussex County Cricket Club legend

Don’t forget the Alarm Clock.

The summer has arrived. We are on Day

two of our first home match versus last

season’s Champions Warwickshire and

unfortunately still in the field. It got me thinking

about what lay ahead this season.

I was very fortunate to play for 19 seasons

as a professional cricketer and play on some

magnificent rounds such as Lords, The Oval,

Trent Bridge etc. But I must admit as nice as

those grounds are, I used to really enjoy playing

on the out-grounds in their Festival weeks.

Some of my favourite out-grounds were

Scarborough, Colwyn Bay, Cheltenham College

and Eastbourne.

And then there was Southend and Colchester.

I recall those two as I have many memories

where my lack of height was constantly

reminded to me and the fact that the nation

of my birth - Wales - had an unhealthy interest

in sheep was always mentioned. It was always

a red-hot atmosphere when you went to an

Well our lads, as I write, will visit our two

was at Arundel during our 2003 Championship

year when we beat Essex. Tim Ambrose, who

is in the Warwickshire team today, and myself

had two 150-plus run partnerships in the game

which saw us over the line. There were always

happy memories at Arundel for me. I used to

do my warm-downs in the Black Rabbit over a

Budweiser or two after the game. No ice baths

in those days!

I thought I’d share a really funny experience I

had as a Glamorgan player back in our 1997

Championship year at Colwyn Bay. Robert

Croft, our off spinner was picked for England

and Dean Cosker our left-arm spinner was

picked for England under-19s. So we had a

massive match on a potential turning wicket

without a spinner and with a Championship to

be won.

A left-arm spinner called Phil North (who had

been on the Glamorgan staff for about five

years) was playing club cricket for Swansea and

was summoned by our captain Matt Maynard

to play the match. Out of obscurity! What an

opportunity. It was real Roy of the Rovers stuff.

He could get a Championship medal!

So we all travelled up to North Wales the day

before the match and arrived for a net at 2pm.

The Welsh newspapers and TV were all over

Phil at nets. There was quite a bit of rain in the

air and the forecast was terrible for the next

day.

It was decided that we would all go out for

a couple of beers at the local pub called the

Liverpool Arms. After three beers we all started

to make our way back to the hotel apart from

Phil who was cooking on Gas Mark 5 by this

time.

We turned up at the ground at 9.30pm as

it was bucketing with rain all night and the

umpires decided the match would start late

at 11.30am. There was no sign of Phil. Nobody

could get hold of him and the media were on

the case as you’d expect.

Phil rocked up at about 11.15pm and was in a

bad way. He looked as if he’d gone ten rounds

with Mike Tyson! The local brew had really taken

its toll on him.

Needless to say Matt had to take the tough

decision to send Phil home with his tail

between his legs. Not before he had to endure

an absolute hiding from the media. When he

returned for the next match for Swansea the

sympathy of a cricket dressing room was in full

force. His team mates had put a giant alarm

clock on a string on his clothes peg!

Anyway back to good old Sussex by the Sea.

Please support these Festivals, they really are

special occasions and I know the lads love

playing in front of a big crowd.

Me?? I’ll be at the Black Rabbit, after play!!

Cheers

With Sussex hosting the traditional international event at

Eastbourne, the Aegon Championships, as part of the

grasscourt build-up to Wimbledon, my mind wondered

if London-On-Sea could muscle its way back onto the tour calendars

once more by recreating the tournament it developed in its own

cool, friendly, vibrant image before the event’s demise after 22 years

in 2000.

Let me tell you a story from back in the day which illustrates the vibe

I want to bring back with the event.

There I was with bunch of journalists and sat amongst us was Steffi

Graf.We were upstairs in English’s Fish Restaurant and Oyster Bar in

East Street.Steffi was happy to be there. She was a big music fan and

she and I chatted about bands of the time as diverse as Simple Minds

and Inspiral Carpets. There was never any aloofness from the tennis

superstar, no pedestal to climb down from. She was relaxed, easy to

talk to and genuinely interested in what you had to say (even in my

case).

The late George Hendon ran it (and the Eastbourne event, as it

happens) and was responsible for creating such a feel. The players

loved him. Steffi was a special favourite and won the tournament a

record six times.

But Martina Navratilova – a two time champion – and Chris Evert –

who collected a hat-trick of crowns – enjoyed coming back year after

year, popping in to the tournament officerwhere George’s wife Eileen

and daughter Nola would be dispensing confections of Quality Street

from its famous box.The crème de la crème had a ball in the city

which provided fun, good food and the sea besides tempting toffees

and chocolate and tennis.

It would be a tall order to find

another person with

George Hendon’s

charisma and, indeed,

to convince the

powers-that-be

that it would

be worth

finding a slot

for Brighton

and Hove

somewhere on

the professional

tennis

bandwagon.

But who would have

thought the city would be

able to stage matches in the

Rugby World Cup or welcome

the Tour de France, with Lance

Armstrong, in the 1990s?

If you don’t dream nothing

happens.

Mike DonovanLet’s welcome back the Tennis

Welcome to my first column for Absolute Brighton, I shall be

contributing a monthly column on sports related issues, and I

hope you find these of interest.

I have been campaigning for a number of months in support of the Amex

Stadium’s bid to host matches at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

I corresponded with the game’s governing bodies and met with RFU

representatives in Parliament

I was therefore delighted at the recent announcement that the Amex

would take its place as a host venue alongside Twickenham and the

Olympic Stadium.

The Rugby World Cup is the third biggest sporting event in the world,

and I am delighted that Brighton will play a part in a monumental occasion

when the tournament comes to England in 2015.

It is especially pleasing because the Amex faced very tough competition

from some more established stadia. I know from my various letters

and meetings that the fantastic facilities available at the venue and the

undoubted attraction of Brighton and Hove as a host city were very

apparent to selectors.

The announcement is great news for the city, and for the future of rugby

in the region. I know that my constituents will be looking forward to a

great occasion in 2015.

Example is not the main thing in

influencing others, it is the only

thing.” – Albert Schweitzer

This memorable quote from

Pulitzer Prize winner Schweitzer offers

an inspiring insight into the realm of

leadership, one that Ed Joyce is taking very

seriously.

This season the Sussex dressing room

won’t hear any rousing speeches like that

of Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday, or Kurt

Russell in Miracle, however, they certainly

won’t be lacking in inspiration. In his first

full season as club captain, Ed Joyce is

looking to be a leader not only on the pitch

but also in the example he sets every day.

“I think my personality is just to be as

consistent as possible, to lead by example,”

Joyce said with a sense of quiet confidence.

“I’m not a massive one for shouting and

making big speeches or anything like that.

You can live by a very specific set of values

we have at the club and the job of any

leader is to try and live by those values and

make sure that the young players coming

through are abiding by them as well. So try

and be the fittest, try and score the most

runs, try and be the one who does the

right thing as much as you possibly can and

people will follow you.”

Joyce, 34,is undoubtedly a leader in his

actions, with over 12,000 first-class runs in

county cricket, two winners medals from

the Twenty20 Cup and a Pro40 National

League title, he certainly hasn’t lost the fire

in his belly.

With the loss of, arguably, the greatest

batman ever to play for Sussex, following

Murray Goodwin’s move to Glamorgan in

the off-season, the onus will be on Joyce to

hit big scores consistently.

Following the loss of Goodwin, the

Sharks have made a number of signings

in the close season, with former Sussex

batsman Rory Hamilton-Brown returning

and Surrey all-rounder Chris Jordan and

Andrew Miller signing on at the newly-

named BrightonandHoveJobs.com County

Ground.

While such additions are sure to help as

the season progresses, at first it will be

Joyce’s job to create the right harmony

within the squad, a task he is slightly

apprehensive about taking on.

He said: “It’s my first season properly

captaining a county so I’m a little bit

nervous about how we’re going to go,”

pausing for a moment before clearing

his throat and continuing. “But I feel like

we’re finding ourselves and we’ve got a

squad of players to compete in all three

competitions.”

The signing of Hamilton-Brown, in

particular, is one that excites Joyce ahead

of the 2013 season. The 25-year-old right-

hand batsman moved to Surrey in 2010,

linking up with his teammate and best

friend Tom Maynard.

However, in June last year Maynard was

killed on a London Underground line, with

the subsequent revelation that he had been

a “habitual” user of cocaine taking its toll

on Hamilton-Brown’s mental stability.

An unsuccessful return to the Surrey side

left him shot of confidence and feeling

isolated. After being released from his

contract with Surrey in September he re-

signed with the Sharks and Joyce feels he is

first full season as Sussex captain.

now back to his best and raring to go.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone more

up for a cricket match in my life,” he said

with an enthusiastic smile. “He had a tough

couple of years so there might be a few

scars from that but he’s a quality cricketer

and he seems to be in a great place right

now.”

With the latest additions linking up

with the veteran players in the squad

such as Michael Yardy, Chris Nash and

Steve Magoffin, the squad contains a

comfortable mix of experience and youth.

A combination, Joyce believes,has installed

a strong work ethic in the team.

“I think fundamentally the strongest thing

we have at the club is a great team ethic

and great team values, we are without a

doubt, in my opinion, the hardest working

team in the country. If you ask any other

team they would say we’re not particularly

nice to play against because we do things in

the right way,” Joyce explained with an air

of conviction.

As the full-time captain Joyce, or ‘Spud’

as he is known to teammates, will be

working closely with Sussex head coach

Mark Robinson and, despite differing

in leadership techniques, the former

Middlesex batsman is confident the two

will work well together.

“We are very different and I think that will

actually be a good thing. He’ll probably lead

more in the dressing room than I would

and i’ll be the one out on the pitch doing

the decision making there. I’m probably a

little bit calmer than he is but I think that’s

a good thing. I think the team needs both.”

Joyce took on the role as captain on a

temporary basis in July 2012, following

Michael Yardy’s decision to step down and,

while he will be looking to lead the team

in his own way, he will also be recycling

his favourite methods of the ICC World

Twenty20 champion in his own leadership

style.

“He feels very passionately about the club

and out in the field he’s very calm, always

making rational decisions and no matter

what happens, if you’re winning or losing a

game, I think that always came out in him,

so I think those are the biggest traits that

I’d like to copy.”

As the club captain and one of the older

members of the squad, the responsibility

on Joyce to lead by example has never

been more prevalent and, as the season

swings into full flow, coach Robinson feels

it is up to Spud to help them progress.

“Ed now takes over on a different stage

where he’s got some quite fresh faces in

it like Rory and young players like Ben

Brown and Wellsy (Luke Wells) looking to

progress, so it’s Ed’s role now to almost

father some of those players through. It’s a

different time for the club now with a new

Chief Executive etcetera, it feels exciting, it

feels new and that’s healthy.”

With high hopes for the season and a well-

balanced squad of players, the pressure

is on Joyce to deliver, although, with

everything still to play for this season, he

won’tbe turning his back on the methods

that have got him this far.

“I’ve been here for four years now and the

lads know I’ll try and perform by myself.

When things need to be said they will

be said and I’m just going to try and add

consistency and try and get the best out

of individuals, which is something Sussex

have done over the last few years. Lead by

example will be my mantra.”

41

We are without a doubt, in my opinion, the

hardest working team in the country.

Julia Chanteray, President of Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce takes us

Inside the ChamberWhat are we proud of?

I have far more conversations about the social impact of

business in Brighton than I do when I go to other cities.

At the recent Brighton and

Hove Chamber of Commerce

Centenary Summit, I was struck

by the level of pride people

have in their city. Everyone was talking

about how we do business differently in

Brighton, and people were very taken by

the theme of mixing business and pleasure.

It became a central theme of the day, and

there were many comments on how they

enjoyed doing business here.

This has made me think about why

there’s a special pride in Brighton

and Hove.

Perhaps it’s because so many people here

have come here, rather than been born

here. We did a quick poll at one of the

Chamber Big Debates recently to see how

many people in the audience were originally

from the city – only about a third of the

business people there were born here.

Many of us, including myself, have chosen to

live and work here, rather than being here

because of an accident of birth. Maybe we

love more what we’ve actively chosen.

I’ve been thinking about the differences in

doing business here compared with other

cities. It does seem that business people in

Brighton are less concerned with making

mega money than in other places – many

people are more interested in earning

enough to give them financial security,

and in creating a good place to work for

themselves and their employees. I have far

more conversations about the social impact

of business in Brighton than I do when I go

to other cities. People here are definitely

interested in what happens as a result of

their business, whether they’re running a

full-on social enterprise or just a regular

business.

And business owners in Brighton are more

focussed on having a healthy relationship

with work, whether that’s doing work

that they love, or spending time on the

other aspects of their lives, or both. And

of course, there’s a lot going on in the city,

so it’s not difficult to get involved outside

of your regular work. The 60+ business

people who volunteer their time to help

run the Chamber are a good example of

this. None of us have to do that, but we

enjoy getting involved and helping out, being

part of something bigger than ourselves and

helping to make events like the Centenary

Summit happen.

Some of the businesses in Brighton are

quite different as well. There are lots of

people doing all sorts of things I’ve never

heard of before. The attendee list at the

summit was a good indication of this –

where else would you find a guitar inventor

(Jon Hirsch) an ethical supermarket (Ruth

and Amy Anslow) and a woman who makes

children’s clothes in black only (Jenny

Barrett) all in the same room. Part of the

pride in Brighton, and feeling that we do

business differently here comes from the

fact that the city is home to many unique

and unusual businesses.

Sustain and AttainEco tech Commercial director Nicola Gunstone tells Iszara Morgan about how we can create a sustainable city.

Business

As it is arguably the most eco

friendly city, it is no wonder the

Eco Tech show’s home is Brighton.

Nicola says “There is a real focus

on eco technology not just in Brighton but

within Sussex itself, there is a lot of really quite

amazing things going on here. We obviously

have a green council, but we also have a lot of

small eco technology businesses as well, that

are all based here doing great things.”

Nicola has always had a strong interest in eco

issues but doesn’t consider herself a diehard

activist. “That’s not me and doesn’t fit with

what I do. I think I’ve always been aware but

it wasn’t actually until I lived in Australia for a

long time and there is real focus on it there,

particularly on things like waste and recycling.

“In terms of the show, we are now in our

second year which is really exciting; this is

always the busiest time of year for us. This year

the focus is on both trade and consumer and

this year we hope we’ve got a lot more for

both of those elements to the show”.

Nicola believes it is extremely important to

cover all aspects to create an eco friendly

society. “You can’t just look at the build of

your house, you also have to look at the way

you get to your work from your house, you

have to look at offices and how people work

in their offices and how people work at home,

and then all of that technology that brings

all of that together as well and without the

convergence of all of that, you won’t have a

sustainable world and that’s why we look at all

the different areas, which is really important”.

The show aims to make people aware of

eco friendly technologies and how it can

improve their lives, as people subconsciously

do things without realising they are helping

the environment. “I think naturally people are

becoming more eco friendly not because they

think they are becoming more eco friendly

but because it’s more available. If you live in

Brighton, you are more aware anyway so you

just assume everyone else is. But the majority

of people on this planet are unaware about all

this and actually have no interest. So making it

mass is not preaching about it, but giving them

the technology that makes their life cleaner,

easier and cheaper” explains Nicola.

There have been new changes to this year’s

show, one being the advisory hub which is a

new innovation that aims to educate home

owners. “Basically as a home owner you can

go to the advisory hub and there will be

experts on that hub where you can get free 15

minute information sessions from an architect

surveyor, a green builder and from the Energy

Saving Trust on all the issues you can think of.

Everything from solar to how you finance it,

does it work to how you make your house

more energy efficient and that can be done

quite quickly” explains Nicola.

The Eco Tech show is taking place on the

14th - 15th June at the Brighton Centre and

has partnered up with People’s Day eco zone,

Brighton Fashion Week’s Sustain show and

Brighton’s Eco Houses.

Brighton entrepreneur launches new insurance enterprise Local entrepreneur Noel Preston has set up his own insurance brokers to rival the industry’s big names.

Based in Brighton, Preston Insurance Brokers believe that they can provide businesses with a personal service they simply wouldn’t receive from a larger organisation.

Born in Hove, Noel relocated to London as a teenager and began his insurance career in 1989 with General Accident. He started broking in 1991 and after many years of working in the city, he returned to Sussex 12 years ago.

With over 20 years’ experience and knowledge in the insurance world, Noel is confident that he can deliver a personal, individual and unique service to his clients

Noel said: “Being based locally means we are always on hand to offer advice, and can provide that face to face relationship people want. Clients seek comfort in

knowing they can rely on us in their hour of need, actually know who they are talking to and not have to deal with a call centre on the other side of the world or a

faceless corporate entity.

“We don’t just hear what our clients want, we listen and make sure we find out exactly what they need so we can deliver a cost-effective approach that suits their requirements.”Preston Insurance Brokers predominantly arrange all aspects of commercial insurance for their clients of all shapes and sizes, however, they can also help them with personal insurance to offer the convenience of having everything under one roof and provide the same level of service.

Preston Insurance Brokers are also committed to supporting the local

community and are active supporters of Sussex County Cricket Club, as well as proud sponsors of Hove Rugby Football Club.

Noel said: “We’ve just confirmed our involvement at the cricket club for this season and sponsorship of Hove RFC. Our team are looking forward to spend some time down at both grounds with clients, prospects, friends and family to make the most of the fantastic hospitality.

“Both clubs provide a great environment to network and discuss business, whilst hopefully witnessing some great success on the pitch!”

Preston Insurance Brokers are holding a free insurance surgery at Sussex County Cricket Club on Friday 31st May and Friday 19th July. There will be an informal chance to discuss business insurance whilst watching some first class cricket. Anyone who makes an appointment in advance will benefit from free entry to the ground.

They know that players taking the right path now can reap the benefits of avoiding an uncertain financial future to accompany the uncertainty of what to do after hanging up their boots for the last time.

Skerritts are proving they have the welfare of players past and present at heart by teaming up with the charity Xpro which provides advice and practical support for former players.

Cardy explained: “As a company we are not too big to be impersonal but we do have the Resources, People and the Knowledge to provide the very best independent advice.

“We don’t simply provide investment products for a client and walk away, we build relationships and robust financial plans, so are always there to offer help and advice”.

Skerritts staff have been providing independent financial advice to the football industry for years and look after the portfolio of several former players as well as working with their local clubs.

Cardy explains: “Historically we have done some work with footballers but we also do a lot of work with investment bankers and while those two professions might seem like polar opposites in what they do, actually their financial situations are remarkably similar”

“They grow in their jobs; regularly change employer; earn bonuses but generally only for a compressed period of time. Both have to budget now for the rest of their lives.

“They face the same issues as neither knows how long their career is going to last, that is why it is so important that we look at their financial planning early as possible in their career to look after their and their families continued Wellbeing.”

Cardy added: “it is one thing earning money but it is another managing it and making it work for you.

“It is so important players have a bit of a safety net and protect their wealth and this is one of the things we are doing with Xpro working with ex-players to look after their money whilst also helping them with everything from recouping pensions they didn’t know they had to reinvestments and protecting after their families. Hopefully life works out perfectly but if it doesn’t at least there is a safety net. .”

Cardy continued: “You never know as a footballer when your income is going to stop so you need to build a sensible robust plan.

“Footballers more than most need to plan for all life’s changes - that transfer to a new club for more money or less money, marriage, children - we can help build that plan to accommodate all of those things.”

A manager’s tactics and a player’s understanding of them might be crucial in team play but they are also crucial when it comes to financial

planning managing.Mark Cardy, a Director and Chartered Financial Planner at Brighton-

A manager’s tactics and a player’s understanding of them might be crucial in team play but they are also crucial when it comes to financial

planning managing.Mark Cardy, a Director and Chartered Financial Planner at Brighton-

based Independent Financial Advisers Skerritts, explains why footballers need to use their tactical nous and seek out the right advice now to

prepare for life ahead once the game is over.

Richard SkerrittFinancial advice by

Use your Watertank for Income

Time is a true ally to an investor, so we have to get it on our side.

51

Finding a source of regular and

consistent income without taking

on unacceptable levels of risk these

days is as rare as an extended sunny

spell of weather. Income-seekers are at risk

of either seeing their underlying capital base

whittled away, with disastrous longer term

consequences, or of simply being unable to

find anything that provides a level of natural

income that matches their day-to-day

requirements. This too will lead to erosion

of capital.

At Skerritts we have been providing

a solution since 2006. Our Head of

Investments, Andrew Merricks, first wrote

about his “watertank” method of income

provision in a financial magazine in that

year and we are pleased to say that literally

hundreds of people have benefitted from it

since. And it is not as though the method

has not been severely tested. The Lehman’s

crisis, subsequent credit crunch and the

ongoing Eurozone travails have acted as a

serious stress test on its principles, yet it

has emerged robustly from all that has been

thrown at it.

How does it work?

Let us assume that you are seeking a net

income of, say, 7% per year. Most investors,

or even their advisors, would look for

something giving this return. In a low

interest world, even if they succeeded

in finding it, there would inevitably be a

concentration of risk assets and almost

inevitable disappointment. We look at it

slightly differently.

What people are really asking for is a total

net return of 7% on their capital upon which

they can draw without depleting it. This

makes the chances of success in satisfying

the objective that much easier.

Time is a true ally to an investor, so we have

to get it on our side. Instead of thrashing

the capital pot from day one in search of

the income required, we set aside around

18-24 months’ worth and keep it in cash.

This is drawn upon to satisfy the income

requirement initially. The remainder of what

you are using goes into the “watertank”.

This allows us time to begin investing in a

way that uses a variety of sources to top up

the tank, using a combination of interest,

dividends, bond yields and capital growth, to

achieve the overall return being sought.

Naturally a realistic target should be set, but

since 2006 we have delivered returns from

varying asset classes, ranging from property

to gold, high yield bonds to equities.

Crucially, no one asset has consistently

been the answer, so diversification through

an actively managed strategy has far more

chance of succeeding than the buy and hold,

hit and hope tactics that we have seen all

too often being adopted.

As with any watertank, the level will

fluctuate from time to time, and this is

where giving the strategy time at outset is

so important. Once the returns have gained

a bit of momentum, we simply draw from

the tank – making monthly or quarterly

withdrawals to send to your bank

account from which you have

been drawing from the start of the process.

Your bank account is thus topped up by

turning the tap on your “watertank”.

Space restricts us from giving intricate

details, but our broadening client base and

recent industry awards suggest that we

are providing what people are looking for.

Our discretionary management team run

portfolios along conservative, balanced and

more aggressively focussed growth criteria,

as well as providing income driven solutions

too.

Silicon Beach. The Digital Cluster. Whatever you might call it, it’s clear

there is something in the air in

Brighton that attracts creative and

innovative people. Whether it is freelancers

in a co-working space or one of the growing

digital companies, this is a city that punches

above its weight in the tech and digital media

industries.

At the heart of the new industries is a

membership organisation that promotes the

sector and provides a social and practical

support platform. Wired Sussex is the voice

of the digital cluster and is now a familiar

name in the city. As such, there is no better

person to ask about how Brighton became

such a hub of innovation than the Managing

Director of Wired Sussex, Phil Jones.

First, I asked Phil what is Wired Sussex and

how long has it been established?

“According to the dusty records Wired

Sussex started in 1997, a long long time ago.

It was funded by some Government money

to the local chamber of commerce and it

was publicly funded until 2007. Then there

was a decision by the board that they would

no longer like to receive public money,

which seems a bit of a strange decision,

when organisations were fighting to keep

their funding, but in hindsight it was a canny

decision.

“As long as the core funding is from the

government, you are always going to be

delivering to the objectives of the public

sector, which creates a tension as Wired

Sussex champions the work of the private

sector. We needed to develop a method

of existing independently from the public

sector and having had a few years to build

this up, it has been the making of Wired

Sussex. Freed of those shackles, we have

been more focussed on ways we can grow

and promote the digital sector.

“There was something about Brighton even

back in 1997. I was talking to someone who

used to work at Apple during that time,

and he told me back then Brighton had

the highest sale of Apple Mac products per

head of anywhere in Europe. The seed was

there even if no-one knew it at that time,

except perhaps the guy at Mac looking at

these weird statistics. It showed there were

people here interested in technology and

innovation.

“In hindsight Brighton was fertile ground for

three reasons:

“Firstly, the pool of university talent.

“Secondly, the city had people who

wanted to do things in different ways.

This has been a characteristic of Brighton

since the early days. Look at the Pavilion,

a member of the Royal Family chose

Brighton to build something very different

to what existed in London. So I think this

way of thinking has always been here.

People in Brighton aren’t down on people

who do things differently.

“Thirdly, the default position in Brighton

seems to be: don’t ask someone else

to go and do something for you but go

out and do it yourself. If you think there

should be a food festival, the default

position is to make the food festival happen.

There is a can-do attitude which translates in

our sector into an entrepreneurial attitude,

so there is no surprise that Brighton has one

of the highest rate of start-ups in the south

east.”

If the seed were there, when did people

start to notice something was strirring?

“The idea of digital Brighton has gradually

grown over the years, but perhaps a key

moment was when Victoria Real managed

to snag the digital side of what was then an

unknown and untried idea called Big Brother,

which of course became incredibly successful

and they became successful of the back of it.

Ultimately they got bored with it and they

moved up to London, but a lot of the people

involved with Victoria Real decided they

didn’t want to move to London and wanted

to stay here. It was these people who went

out and started their own companies which

created the bedrock of the Brighton digital

cluster.

“Place matters. The argument goes that

you can set up a digital company anywhere

A lot of the people involved with Victoria Real

decided they didn’t want to move to London and

wanted to stay here. It was these people who

went out and started their own companies which

created the bedrock of the Brighton digital cluster.

Business

Wired for SuccessBrighton has gained a reputation for its digital innovations, and the members of Wired Sussex have been at the heart of the success. The MD of Wired Sussex, Phil Jones explains how. Words: Ian Trevett

53

where there is a decent band-width, but

people don’t. They aggregate into clusters

where they can share expertise and there

is talent. In Brighton place matters as you

want to keep staff happy, you want to be in

a part of town where people want to work,

such as the Lanes or North Laine, even

though these are some of the parts of town

with the worst digital connectivity. The best

connectivity can be found on the outskirts.

“But culture is important. If you bring a client

down from London and you walk through

the North Laine and get a coffee, it isn’t

hard to argue the fact that this is a creative

city - you can see it all around. If you were in

Portslade it may be a tougher sell.”

How many members have joined Wired

Sussex and is there a typical company?

“In total we 2,426 members (companies and

freelancers) across Sussex, with about 1,000

companies in Brighton.

“The biggest companies are in the 150

plus members of staff such as Brandwatch,

iCrossing and Disney Online Services Europe

must be approaching that figure now.

iCrossing are the digital arm of Hearst

Publishing and we have Disney, clearly these

are big outfits. The average is about six

and a half staff, so it is a cluster of lots of

small companies. Three or four years ago

the average was four and half to five so as

companies mature they are growing. It is an

eco system.

“With such a large membership, we can

lobby for the sector as a whole. Ultrafast

broadband is a prime example of this. We

had to prove to the Government that there

is a creative and digital cluster down here.

“We had to show that the growth of the

sector was being hampered by the lack of

investment in infrastructure.

“We had to help the council gather the

evidence based bid and we are now working

with the local and Dept of Culture, Media

and Sport to actually implement the plans.

“We couldn’t have done all this if we hadn’t

been funded by the companies.”

What interests you personally?

“I am interested in how the digital industry

has a disruptive power, it impacts on

everything it touches in ways you don’t

necessarily expect. That forces people

to think and do things in different ways.

“Good examples are the music industry and

academia with open online courses. There is

a real opportunity for companies to discover

better models of working and Brighton can

be right at the absolute forefront of this. I am

excited about how digital technologies can

empower companies, people and societies. It

is talent that drives everything.

“I am too old to be a digital native. I’m not

too old to be interested but my generation

do not work with digital instinctively. I am

interested in new ideas and ways you can re-

evaluate old ideas. I don’t think digital should

be treated as a Year Zero where everything

that went before was wrong

“When you can combine old ideas with new

ones, that can be where really interesting

things happen.

“We have a fantastic board made up of

senior managers of some of the best digital

companies and it is fascinating hearing

what projects these companies are getting

involved with. The scale of their ambitions

means it is great to come into work.”

The Brighton and Hove Business Awards shortlist is revealed

Some of the Brighton’s biggest and best – and youngest and newest – make the 32 finalists shortlisted for thirteen awards in this year’s Brighton and Hove Business Awards.

Four companies (Blue Eyed Sun, Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival, Crunch.co.uk and The Student Room) make the shortlist twice whilst European Recruitment and the Kitchen Store feature three times.

Eight leading Brighton businesses, three major titles, four trade organisations and one of the most iconic and fun venues in the city have come together to create a competition which acknowledges the diversity and uniqueness of our City and celebrates those companies, organisations and individuals who really build the Brighton brand.

The sponsors include Allied Irish Bank, Brighton & Hove Jobs.com, Cardens Accountants, The Treatment Rooms, The Montefiore Hospital, The British Engineerium, Qualifa and The Eventa Group. The Argus, Absolute Brighton and Juice 107.2FM are media partners and the competition is supported by the MDHUB,

Chamber of Commerce, Brighton & Hove City Council and B&H Tourism Alliance.

The list of finalists reflects Brighton’s broad range of businesses and includes vets, recruitment sites, tea shops, bars, training companies, dental hygienists and food festivals – as well as such iconic sights as the Pier, the Marina and the Amex.

Commenting on the shortlist, Tony Mernagh, chair of the judges and executive director of the economic partnership said: “The entries seem to cover every aspect of business life from creative digital services to hospitality and the night-time economy. Few other places in the country can boast such a range of businesses let alone the quality that we have seen on this year’s shortlist.”

The awards will be presented by Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley at Horatio’s Bar on Brighton Pier on Thursday 6th June 2013. The event is set to be the biggest celebration of Brighton business and will be attended by our local MP, Caroline Lucas, the Chief Exec of the council, Penny Thompson, and the Council Leader Jason Kitkat.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.bahba.co.uk at a cost of £50 (inc VAT) and includes a welcome glass of prosecco, a fish and chip supper and unlimited chips and wine. The evening starts at 6.30pm and is followed by a karaoke after party in the Glitterball room.

Judges’ comments“I felt honoured to be invited onto the judging panel. It was great to get behind the scenes and see how the process works and also to discover how many great businesses there are in the city. We had to make some tough choices though. I would love to have given awards to a lot more of them really.” The Brighton and Hove Tourism Alliance

“As a previous winner it was really interesting to be involved with the judging process and see how rigorous it is.” Clare Rogers, The Treatment Rooms

“I really enjoyed the process this year looking at a range of categories, rather than being a sponsor for just one of them. The quality of applicants was really strong, all with their own unique attributes, which led to much healthy debate among the judges!” Michael Wilkins, The AIB Group (UK) Plc

“I thought the judging process would be easy but soon found that it was a real challenge. With so many strong companies entered into each category it took some real soul searching to come up with the right recommendations. I think we got there in the end.” Mike Holland, British Engineerium

“Being a member of the judging panel was a fascinating and enjoyable experience. Reading through the entries, it was apparent that there are so many innovative and ambitious companies working in the city that the majority of local people are unaware of. There were many difficult decisions, emphasised by the fact that members of the panel rarely agreed on their first choices, a testimony to the quality and diversity of the entrants. A perfect antidote to the bad news stories favoured by the television and the national press.” Ian Trevett, Absolute Brighton

“I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the BAHBAs judging process, especially as we were all able to speak our minds and hear some quite passionate supporting statements for the entrants. I particularly liked the format of the judging with all participants given the chance to vote for some very impressive local businesses, as well as being in such a lovely company in a wonderful meeting room space too.” Becky Rowland, Qualifa

The King’s Speech

104

King of BrightonForget 20mph speed limits. If John Healy was King, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button would be tearing round the city streets

There is no point being King unless

you use the power vested in you to

make the City a better place! My list

of measures varies from radical to the more

mundane, but each would create a better

kingdom.

My first major ruling would be to declare

Brighton & Hove a Principality. They exist in

places like Monaco, Luxembourg, Lichenstein

and Andora, so why not Brighton? We would

have a tax-free zone and would encourage

wealth generation by investment. Brighton

is already a destination of choice for many

rich and famous people. This would increase

many fold in the wake of less aggressive

taxes. Inward investment into our City would

enable me to undertake major projects, such

as the regeneration of the King Alfred Centre

into a major international sports complex.

I would replace the ugly monstrosities which

are currently the Brighton Centre and Hove

Town Hall with structures that reflect the

best in current design but sympathetic to

the surroundings in which they are located.

The Brighton Centre would become a major

international venue and able to host exciting

events such as the Brighton Film Festival (to

rival that held in Cannes) and major concerts

with international stars.

To give efficient access to these facilities

would require new infrastructure. I would

provide a monorail link from out of town

car parks to provide fast access to the City

centre and to the east (Marina) and west (to

King Alfred Sports Centre).

And what about a Brighton Grand Prix? Brighton has always been a draw for motor

enthusiasts, so what better than to see a

Formula 1 grid in Marine Drive! If Monaco

can host a Grand Prix around their tight road

system then so can Brighton. Our seafront

roadways would be the fast straights, with

tight corners in the Old Steine, up and back

around St Peter’s Church. It just needs a

bit of imagination and we will have Bernie

Ecclestone clamouring to get the Formula

1 circus here. And, of course, the income

generated from this event alone would

provide a substantial revenue stream for the

Principality.

Being a Principality would require an

impressive palace. Fortunately, Brighton

already has one in the form of the Royal

Pavilion, built by a Prince and most suited

to a King. I would look forward to hosting

outrageous banquets and reliving the

experience of the Prince Regent, who

seemed to have got living in Brighton about

right! But I would want to make sure that

the palace grounds reflected the opulence

inside.

The Pavilion Gardens are currently a

disgrace. They look uncared for and let the

whole Royal Pavilion experience down badly.

Similarly, Hove Lawns would be truly lawns

rather than rough fields that they currently

are. They may be little things but well kept

gardens add greatly to the look and wellbeing

of our City.

I would also deal with some of my pet hates. The Principality would not permit people to

sleep rough on its streets. Proper temporary

accommodation would be provided for

homeless people. Obviously there is a limit,

but to leave people to sleep rough in shop

doorways during a winter as harsh as that

we have recently experienced is just not

acceptable.

Nor is the amount of graffiti around our

streets. I have no problem with “street art”

but mindless scrawls of adolescent idiots will

be outlawed. Offenders would be exiled.

Talking of which, who was the bright spark

who dreamt up the idea of a 20 mile per hour

speed limit? They would be sent packing! It

does not work. It creates more pollution

and is being ignored by most motorists in any

event! It will be scrapped immediately!

And what about the cycle lanes? As a cyclist,

I applaud cycle safety but reducing our major

roads to half the available width by creating

over-sized lanes for virtually non-existent

cyclists, which causes huge traffic jams and

more pollution, is balmy. We need free-

flowing traffic into our Principality. The

architect of these schemes would also be “on

his bike” and out of the kingdom!

Being a Principality would also free us from

the ties and dictates from Brussels. The

mindless bureaucracy would go. I would

be able to change some of the nonsensical

Health & Safety Rules that currently exist.

There is nothing wrong with sensible rules,

but those which we now have seem to go

well beyond what is reasonable and causing

huge additional expense for no worthwhile

benefit.

Our streets might not be lined with gold

but they would be clean, swept and washed

frequently. Chewing gum will be banned.

You can be assured that the kingdom would

thrive and be the envy of many. Above all, my

Principality would ooze quality, yet retain its

eccentric qualities.

My Royal demolition team would then demolish the Holiday Inn, the Brighton Centre, the Odeon, Hove Town Hall and the King Alfred Centre.

I would look forward to hosting outrageous banquets and reliving the experience of the Prince Regent, who seemed to have got living in Brighton about right!

Dates for the diary

Snow Patrol - Run

I remember hearing this driving back from

Birmingham after a trade show, turning the music

up so loud, really hearing the words ‘Light up, light

up, as if you have a choice.’ I had been trying to

make a decision about my future, whether to give

up a well paid job with pension, company car, bonus, the works and

really just go for it- set up my own business and take the risk. It’s

about support, belief and love. I did I resigned the following week

U2 - All I want is you.

A great song from the 80s, amazing voice and

lyrics- “ give me eyes in a world of blindness”, I

am an 80s girl

Hothouse Flowers - I can see clearly now...

Such an uplifting song, still gets me now. I

remember sitting on the seafront last year when

a rainbow appeared while I was listening to that

song. I go most mornings before work for my first

cup of tea of the day, think about my mum who

died two years ago, she was my inspiration. I am so lucky to have had

the opportunity to open a business in Brighton, to be able to walk

out my door and see the sea... its such a great way to start your day.

Otis Redding - These arms of mine

We all want to feel protected, for ourselves, our

children. That is what drives me, my love for

them, family, friends.

Stone Roses - Waterfall

Just a good time in my life, a release from one

life, a time that saw me move from Scotland

to Brighton on December 26th 1994. I am not

risk averse, I tend to make a decision and make

it known so that I have to do it. I think if I knew what I had ahead of

me when I opened the business I would not have done it, but I have

no regrets - it has been the hardest thing I have ever done in my life.

I believe things are about to change.
