Updated April 2019 Classroom Activity: Writing About Places Warm up: Read My Town 1. Sign in to ABRACADABRA. 2. Choose the category Non- Fiction in the Books section. 3. Select My Town from the available list. 4. Click on Go. 5. Click on Read. Classroom Discussion: Places My Town is a non-fiction book, which some students might not be familiar with. Have a discussion to explore what the purpose of this kind of book might be. Prompt them with: Why did the author write this story? What is the most interesting thing about this book? What did the author do to help you understand? Do you think there is more to know about this subject? Why do you think the author wrote this book? What are some of the places in your town? What places do you really like? Why? What places don’t you like? Why? Focus on a Location 1. Group students into pairs. 2. Each group should select a place in their neighbourhood. Some examples: Community centre Local park Library Pool Monument Museum 3. Ask each group to draw a picture of their location. 4. One student should write a sentence that explains what it is, and the other should write about why they chose it. 5. Compile artwork into a book. Keep them in your classroom or the school library.
