Dear Research Medical Center Family,

When will we ever see spring after this long, cold winter? I bet you are as ready as I am to see tulips blooming and trees budding!

Research Medical Center was just named the region’s only Get With The Guidelines Target Stroke Elite hospital. This recognition is for the timely and accurate care we deliver - 75% of our ischemic stroke patients receive the clot-busting drug t-PA within 60 minutes. We are able to earn this type of recognition because EMS providers, regional referring hospitals, and area physicians prefer to send their patients here.

This is big news and an incredible accomplishment for all our teams who care for stroke patients and their families (see page 8). March Madness is coming soon - to narrow college basketball teams to the elite eight. I love that Research Medical Center is the “Elite One” in Stroke Care!

We also recently launched more aspects of our nursing recruitment campaign. This new phase is digital on Google, Facebook and multiple nursing career web sites. We also have a new television ad for nursing recruitment. New applications are coming in and we’re actively interviewing. Don’t forget to tell your nurse friends about our incentive bonus offering! Nan Whalen, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, recently joined Research Medical Center as the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer. She brings 25 years of healthcare experience from being an RN on various units to Unit Manager to most recently, CH Regional Director Quality Resources at St. Joseph Medical Center. She earned her Bachelor in Science of Nursing at Grand View College in Des Moines and her Master of Science in Nursing/Leadership Management at Webster University. Nan is ANCC - Nursing Executive, Advanced-Board Certified.

Stephanie Jenkins, MS, RD, LD, has been promoted to Food Service Director from Patient Services Manager, a position she has held since 2013. Prior to Research Medical Center she worked as the General Manager of Food and Nutritional Services at a hospital in Blythe, CA. She has comprehensive food service operations management experience in acute and long-term care environments encompassing patient services, retail and catering operations, production and sanitation, and clinical dietetics. She earned her Bachelor of Science, Dietetics from Missouri State University and her Master of Science, Family and Consumer Science from Illinois State University.

Sarah Charles, Charge RN, 4North Cardiac Tele, was awarded October 2014’s Employee of the Month award. “Sarah makes patients feel at ease no matter what. She brings a certain side out of patients that no other nurse can. She is a huge reason why everyone loves to be on 4 North.” “Sarah models professional-ism at its highest standard, a positive attitude and is a great team player. She serves 4 North in the charge nurse role as well as preceptor for new nursing staff and new graduates. I hear only positive comments from patients she cares for during daily rounding. We even had one patient that called the unit to find out when Sarah would be working because she wanted to schedule her surgery during Sarah’s workdays so she could have Sarah care for her. We are truly fortunate to have such a wonderful nurse and person on our 4 North team and Research Medical Center.”

Laura Pitt, Medical Tehnologist, Laboratory, was awarded November 2014’s Employee of the Month award. “Laura has been the rock of our evening shift since she transferred to us from Park Lane in the fall of 1999. Laura has 35 years of Laboratory Science experience and shares her knowledge with all her co-workers. Laura is very dependable, hardworking, and communicates well with her team members and all our customers. Outside of work Laura is a great gardener and enjoys working in her yard. She is also a strong advocate for the humane treatment of stray and feral cats.” Thank you Laura for 15 years of commendable service!

Peggy Moor, RN, LDRP, was awarded December 2014’s Employee of the Month award. “Peggy is an ideal employee on our unit. She is always willing to help her co-workers, and her patients love her. One patient described her as having a ‘quiet strength’ that was exactly what she needed during her labor and delivery. Peggy has dedicated many years of her life to this hospital and unit, and she certainly deserves to be recognized.” Thank you Peggy for celebrating your 25th anniversary with Research Medical Center on January 2, 2015!

The Food and Nutrition Services (FANS) team is aspiring to provide exemplary food and beverage service for our patients, physicians, nurses, ancillary support services, visitors and vendors. We believe in diversity, respect and dignity, I.C.A.R.E. behaviors, and compassionate service. The partnerships that we have established with nearly every discipline throughout the hospital enable us to more effectively run our operations.

Our department is working hand-in-hand with senior leadership to ensure that we are remaining focused on sustainability initiatives as well as purchasing and preparing high quality products for our patients and staff. Chef Paul and the culinary team are committed to bringing flavorful and healthy food options to every person that we feed throughout the facility. Food provides nourishment and life to people, and we want to make sure that we are focusing on promoting the proper foods to fulfill each individual’s unique tastes and needs.

Our Registered Dietitians provide medical nutrition therapy and education for our patients and their families. In addition, the dietitians partner with the operations team to lead the superfood promotion in retail every month. This is just one example of how the entire FANS team is focused on making sure our offerings in the retail environment as well as on our patient’s menu are well balanced.

We are passionate about food and fanatic about customer service. You would have to be to do what we do!

Giving each patient and their family the best patient experience is a top priority at every Research Medical Center entity. This means every patient, every time and every touch.

Always. Not Sometimes, Not Usually. Always.

When patients take the time to let us know they had a great experience, we’ll share them. Below is a sampling from last month.

“I am reaching out to say thank you to your hospital and the staff for the care and support they have given my family. My dad recently ended his eight month battle with cancer and he would want you to know what a fabulous job your staff, and in particular Dr. Singh and his nurses did fighting to save his life and in the end helping him die with dignity. As we started what Dad and I would call this journey, our family did not have a desire to go to Research, we had a misperception of the hospital and were convinced we were not going to get the best care. My dad saw many doctors, so I knew from the start when we met Dr Singh, that he was exceptional and rare. He took the time to get to know my dad, and at every appointment (and there were many). Dr Singh and his nurses are a team, sharing mutual respect with each other as they provide thoughtful care to every patient they see. Every time my dad would tell his nurse, or a fellow patient who his doctor was, the response was — he is fabulous, he is one of the best, we love him. There is also a few others that my family would want to thank, Alex and Kirsten (both 4E nurses) who spent my dad’s last 24 hours with him and our family. We also want to thank Gina Marie (I am not sure of her last name) she works in the food service area. We met her early on and she went out of her way during every one of my Dads stays to make his life a little better. These personal touches made the difference, especially when you are dealing with a life altering illness you know you will not beat.”

“Thank you for the care I received last week. Your staff made me feel at home; I believe their bedside manners and impeccable service sped me to recovery. Debbie was especially thoughtful. When she visited me prior to my being moved to the 6th floor, I was deeply touched. I knew she truly cared about my well-being. Choosing Research Medical Center is the best choice I’ve made in a long time. ”

“I was informed today that a patient called to compliment our staff here at Brookside Mammography and specifically her mammo tech Barb (Sheehan). I believe she should be recognized for her outstanding patient care.”

“I would like to thank Brenda (Huntley) for the service she has given my husband and always very pleasant. Again thanks Brenda!”

“Esther (Choi), thank you for your gentle attitude, generous compassion, and profound excellence in your nursing care of me! My utmost thanks and appreciation!”

“Florence (Githere), thank you for all the gracious care you gave me during my stay! Your kindness, and smile made a world of difference to me and my recovery! This nurse displays every single attitude of C-A-R-E!!!!:-)”

“During our visit on 12-26-14 everyone was good. However, Gary (Bartholomew) was exceptional. He really made a bad expe-rience (being sick) better. Thank you.”

“I was admitted 01/20/2015 the care these nurses gave was outstanding. I didn’t have to ask for anything. They always came in with a smile on their faces. They met all of my needs. They took their time to explain what was going on or the meds they were giving. Before I could ask for something it was there. They always had a positive attitude. They took pride in their jobs as RNs. I was showed a lot of compassion; the care was a BIG 10. Thanks for holding me up when I could not hold myself up. Compassion, a great attitude, Respect, and Excellence. All was given. Keep up the good work. You guys rock.”

“Katrina (Wollard) has been a very caring person. Seems to always be close when needed. She is calm, soft spoken, and soothing the patient at all times. As the wife of a patient she is so pleasant and I have enjoyed her. Friendly, always wanting to do what is best for the patient. Very considerate and stays with the patient during treatment. Informs the patient about their progress with praise. Her service the past two days has been totally amazing!!! Whenever I was confused about anything, she would make sure I understood anything. She made sure I was comfortable at all times. She is amazing!!!”

Research Medical Center on the Pathway to excellence

Nursing kicked off the next phase of Pathway to Excellence. This organizational focus on nursing practice is helping Research Medical Center align our priorities now, but overtime with everyone’s involvement, this effort will shine a brighter light on the wants and needs of nurses from many generations and backgrounds. This is all about nurses as members of excellent health-care teams. Pathway to Excellence is a journey helping identify opportunities and aligning them with resources to offer even more support for nursing. We have some of the most dedicated and educated nurses here. Our commitment to nurses is so important to what patients feel, hear, and see in their care.

The Research Foundation Provides $5,000 Scholarships for Nurses Pursuing Master’s in Nursing

Interested in Pursuing a Master’s of Science in Nursing Education? The Research Foundation provides annual scholarships to local nurses interested in pursuing this degree.

Scholarships are available up to a maximum of $2,500 per year for a total amount of $5,000. Applying individuals must hold a BSN or meet admission requirements for graduate study in a nationally accredited nursing program and have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above to apply. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

A recent scholarship recipient said, “It took away the question mark in my head, whether I should pursue my master’s degree. After I received the scholarship I thought, ‘I should really pursue this. They believe in me so I’m going to go for it.’”

Look good, Feel BetterFree program provided by the american Cancer Society at Research Medical Center

Research Medical Center offered our first ever Look Good Feel Better class. Three patients attended and were joined by friends and family. The American Cancer Society graciously offers this class free of charge to female patients who are going through their cancer journey. Above you will find a picture of the class participants. The two hour class teaches attendees everything from clothes to wear during treatment to how to apply makeup. Each patient gets to keep a makeup kit that has over $200 of name brand makeup supplies.

This was a perfect example of why I got into healthcare. As I prepared for the first class I wasn’t sure what to expect, however, it all became very clear when I arrived to help clean up. All three of the patients were smiling and laughing. In two short hours a bond had been made between the three of them that I suspect will carry on long after their cancer treatment. When I asked if they enjoyed the class, I received an emphatic “yes.” One responded that all patients should be aware of this and she highly recommended that they participate.

After cleaning up, many of the patients had parked near the cancer center and wanted to cut through to get to their cars. All three of them wanted to stop by infusion to show off their makeup and hats. The response by the infusion nurses was fantastic; they were all excited to see them and asked great questions about the class. The three patients who attended were physically “glowing” at this point and after several more hugs and thank you’s, the day was over.

Please encourage patients to attend our next class on May 12th. Details below. I would like to see the room full and have the ability to touch a few more patients in a very special way.

Look Good Feel Better is a free program from the American Cancer Society designed for women dealing with hair loss and skin changes from chemotherapy and radiation. You will learn specific techniques to help make the most of your appearance while undergoing treatment.

The Education Committee is excited to announce that March’s MED Talk will be “The Golden Hour for Stroke Care: Have CT Will Travel,” presented by Dr. Ahmed. M (microbes) E (environment) D (disease) Talks are 30 minute presentations aimed at providing learning experiences for physicians that are topical and relevant in today’s healthcare environment. Every minute counts in stroke care, and Dr. Ahmed will be speaking about the positive impact that other healthcare organizations have experienced by placing portable CT scanners in ambulances for quick diagnosis and treatment.

MED Talks will be held on the first Wednesday of every month from Noon - 12:30pm with the hope that physicians will be inspired to participate in these information sharing opportunities.

AAFP Prescribed credit (0.5 hours) will be awarded to attendees.

Stepping outside of the (Recycling) BoxAs part of Research Medical Center’s continuous efforts to increase recycling efforts within the hospital, the Supply Chain Department along with the help of Stericycle, Inc., our partner with the Integrated Waste Stream Solutions (IWSS) service, connected with Avenue of Life. Avenue of Life (AOL) is a local not-for-profit organization, where together we organized a recycling event where furniture and mattresses were donated. This event not only amplifies the hospital’s sustainable efforts, but also has a positive impact on the community in so many ways. Desiree Monize, founder of AOL, was very excited when they were approached to assist Research Medical Center with an abundance of furniture and mattresses that would have otherwise gone to the landfill.

“Our vision is to be catalysts for transformation in our community by breaking the cycle of poverty through community development, collaborative partnerships, and wrap-around services,” stated Desiree. “Avenue of Life is using recycling to create jobs for individuals with barriers to employment. Pastoral Care department Brought ash Wednesday to Research Medical Center Patients

On Wednesday, February 18 the Pastoral Care Department hosted an Ash Wednesday service to observe the beginning of the season of Lent, and provided ashes for all those who requested them. Over 100 patients, staff, and visitors at Research Medical Center and Research Brookside Campus received the imposition of ashes on their foreheads in the sign of the cross. For many in the Christian and Catholic faiths, the 46 days prior to Easter which make up the season of Lent are a time of fasting, self-reflection, and confession.

Sister Joan Chittister, a Benedictine nun and contributor to Huffington Post, writes, “Lent is a call to weep for what we could have been and are not. Lent is the grace to grieve for what we should have done and did not. Lent is the opportunity to change what we ought to change but have not. Lent is not about penance. Lent is about becoming, doing and changing whatever it is that is blocking the fullness of life in us right now. Lent is a summons to live anew.”

A point for reflection…The Lenten season aligns with our mission. If we all applied these principles to our continuing patient care, what new and fresh outcomes would occur, especially in the way we care for those we serve?

department employee Safety officer CommitteeThe Department Employee Safety Officer Committee (DESO) is an active committee that meets once per month to discuss and improve on the safety and well-being of our patients, visitors and guests. Together we focus on key items each month and share with our departments to help reduce risk of injury. This month our main focus is on slips, trips and falls and how to prevent them. Over the next week your DESO should be meeting within their department to share information on how you can help prevent slips, trips, and falls.

Research Medical Center has been selected as the first site in our national organization to launch CareView. This is new technology our nurses will be piloting at the patient bedside beginning in March. The technology uses motion detection software to offer nurses another tool for close observation of high-risk patients. When a patient in a monitored bed makes movements that indicate he/she might be at high risk for a fall, advance notice is delivered to the care giver immediately. The pilot phase of this project gives us the perfect opportunity to see if this new technology offers additional support toward providing even safer and higher quality care.

Research Medical Center is seeking wise night nurses for night and weekend patient care. We’re hiring day shift nurses too and right now you can earn a $3,000 referral bonus for each nurse you refer that we hire. The bonus applies for any full-time nurse on any shift in our inpatient units, surgery department, emergency department, outpatient oncology, or cardiac cath lab.

New nurses need to be hired or accept a full-time bonus-eligible position by March 31, 2015.
