1988: The 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization Welcome HOME - House Of Modification Examples Inc. is established
Goal: Construct a 3,650 sq. ft. wheelchair-accessible design demonstration home
1990: Advisory Committee kicks off $350,000 fund raising campaign
1991: Scenic 18-acre parcel of land located just 30 minutes North of Milwaukee is purchased
1993: Volunteers create wheelchair-friendly trails, picnic areas in Welcome HOME woods
1995: Welcome HOME volunteers awarded a JCPenney Co. Golden Rule Award, which includes a $57,000 gift to the building fund
April 1996: Construction begins. Hundreds of volunteers devote thousands of hours over the next two years to construct a distinctive ranch-style family home
May 1, 1998: Welcome HOME doors open to the public. Free tours of the wheelchair accessible demonstration home begin
Autumn 1998: Welcome HOME Bed & Breakfastis licensed to host overnight guests
Today: Welcome HOME programs continue to be operated entirely by dedicated volunteers
BRING your camera and notebook. We will gladly share ideas and information about the modifications, products and materials you’ll see at Welcome HOME. Individualized tours allow us to devote our time to helping you. Tours are free.
RELAX with a st“roll” along wheelchair-friendly trails on the Welcome HOME grounds. Meander through prairie, woodland and gardens. Grounds are open to the public – free of charge.
