About UsOur Background, Values & Mission envoynegotiation.com

Envoy Negotiation is an ambitious project that aims to transform society and student outcomes, by making

negotiation education a cornerstone of the Australian curriculum and school experience.

We are led by young professionals with a huge breadth of negotiation experience and qualification — including top honours at international competitions, postgraduate and undergraduate study in negotiation, and naturally the real

world experience of founding and operating Envoy.

Before Envoy, we spent our time teaching negotiation for free to hundreds of students across Australia; both

through direct training sessions, and building conferences and competitions that let students practice their negotiation

skills in interactive settings.

This model could only take us so far, however. We needed a professional vehicle to take negotiation education to the

next level. And so, Envoy Negotiation was born.

Although Envoy also offers corporate training and individual coaching, our heart and soul lies in teaching negotiation to school students, and our business and financial models are

built around expansion in this area.

First — we want to make negotiation training a core offering for all school students before they leave school. Young adults need practical negotiation skills to cope with moving out of home, interviewing for jobs, and buying their first car. Envoy helps students prepare for these challenges.

Second — we want to establish a school circuit for negotiation across Australia. This circuit will give students

practical experience in negotiation, prioritising their interests, and empathising with other people. We have concrete plans

for setting up this circuit, and invite you to join us.

Third — we teach students completely ethical styles of negotiation. Young adults should know that they can stand

up for their interests, without disadvantaging others.

Free PersonalisationEvery student and every class is different — so why settle

for a cookie cutter presentation you could find online? Envoy Negotiation will fully personalise your negotiation workshops and seminars, including content and examples built to your desires, for

no extra charge.

'

Take-Home MaterialsHomework exists for a reason; students learn best when they can reinforce theory by working through example applications, so they

can more actively engage with the material. All Envoy seminars come with take-home materials (including problems, theory

summaries, and additional content) to bolster learning.

N

Post-Workshop SupportWe recognise that class time is only a fraction of the total learning experience for students. Questions often arise only after students

have time to think on the content and put it into practice. Envoy offers a 30-day follow-up guarantee that will help students

continue to learn, well after the workshop ends.

-

Fully Ethical LearningPopular media teaches young adults that negotiation is a

cutthroat business, based on using others to your advantage. We wholeheartedly reject this notion, and teach students how to negotiate well with others by practicing empathy, goodwill, and openness — protecting the values you have enshrined in them.

Holistic SeminarOur 45-minute seminar section gives students a brief overview of the entire negotiation process and key concepts, then focuses particularly on useful planning strategies to get ahead.

Supplementary MaterialsStudents will receive 2 separate supplementary worksheets, to help reinforce the learning and encourage students to apply the workshop content next time they enter a negotiation.

Practical ComponentThis class also contains a 10-minute practical exercises, which asks students to directly apply the skills they have just learned — improving comprehension and likelihood of real world use.

Program FocusesThis workshop is an introductory level course designed for senior school students, with the

following focus areas:

1. Understanding of the Negotiation Process The workshop gives students a conceptual model

of negotiation, helping them understand “what comes next” and plan accordingly.

2. Preparing for Negotiation Fundamentals shows students how to thoroughly plan for negotiations, improving confidence and

decision-making ability during discussions.

3. Self-Analysis and Emotional Insight This program teaches participants how to figure

out what each party in the discussion really wants (and why!), building better solutions for everyone.

FundamentalsKey Learning Outcomes

Conceptual UnderstandingOur seminar content begins with an overview of concepts that apply across entire negotiations. Students will learn how to:

» Break any negotiation down into component stages (RADBA)

» Analyse themselves and others for what they really want, beyond their stated positions

» Determine whether a possible deal is worth accepting, and better than alternatives

» Perceive negotiations as a solvable trade-off across issues (not just a power struggle!)

» Perceive negotiations as an opportunity for win-win solutions that benefit everybody

» Develop the habit of planning what they want to say, and improve their communication

Research & PreparationThe workshop then delves into practical strategies to help students gain an edge before a negotiation even starts. They will learn how to:

» Anticipate clashes in a negotiation before they arise, and plan for them

» Brainstorm possible solutions and resolutions to any negotiation

» Gain a better understanding of the issues within a negotiation

» Perform targeted, efficient research on the surrounding context of the negotiation

» Evaluate proposed solutions according to their values, and determine which to pursue

» Determine what concessions they can offer, and what they expect in return

G

Want More?Fundamentals is based off the first workshop in our Blueprint program. While we’ve made a few modifications to ensure that Fundamentals also works as a standalone service (notably boosting the breadth of the seminar content!),

this makes it easy to use Fundamentals as a “trial run” for your school and later upgrade to The Blueprint if desired.

Please note that if some of your students have already completed The Blueprint program, we do not recommend placing them in Fundamentals as well, due to the overlap. Instead, we recommend consulting us for a tailored

follow-up program based on your students’ earlier feedback.

Our VisionFor a Senior School Negotiation Circuit envoynegotiation.com

The communication skills that students learn now will be crucial for their later success in every realm of life... whether pursuing a career, raising a family, or buying a house or car. Adult life involves negotiation in an extraordinary range of

contexts, with an incredible variety of personalities.

So why do our extracurriculars only teach negotiation skills tangentially, and in many contexts that will rarely

apply to students outside school?

Activities like debating, public speaking, and Model United Nations all teach fantastic lessons to our students — and

Envoy offers coaching in those extracurriculars as well — but they also provide relatively niche skillsets.

Your child or student will spend much more of their life trying to negotiate wages or set household rules than they will

setting government policy... which makes it startling that our extracurriculars do not directly teach students the skills

they need to navigate these real-life scenarios.

Envoy Negotiation wants to fix this, by progressively establishing a regular negotiation circuit for senior

schools across the nation. Students will voluntarily sign onto small school teams — much like in debating — and will

be paired with teams from other participating colleges.

In each round, both teams will receive a scenario (involving a practical dispute or negotiation of some kind) and a ‘side’ of

the case with a hidden set of facts.

The students will then negotiate with each other, and strive both to reach a satisfactory outcome for their side, while

also preserving their reputation and building better relationships where possible.

With adjudicators providing structured feedback and unveiling an additional lesson to be learned from each

round’s scenario, the Envoy Negotiation school circuit will teach students how to negotiate in the real world... not just

in artificial, timed-speech formats.

Competition OverviewPrinciples & Structure

Core PrinciplesWe believe that any effective and engaging negotiation circuit should be built around the following principles:

» The circuit should have a familiar structure, held after-hours, to make it easier for schools to incorporate it into their busy schedules.

» To encourage student participation, and reward hardworking students, the circuit should also feature finals rounds and awards.

» Teams should be incentivised to try hard in rounds even when they know they have already qualified for the finals.

» Students should be rewarded both for achieving their personal goals, and finding win-win solutions that help both parties.

» Scoring should reward students for being creative and effective, and allow them to use negotiation styles that work for them.

» Both competition rules and scoring should require ethical and honest negotiation styles, to both retain and develop student integrity.

» Teams should be incentivised to use strategies where all members participate fully, to make sure every student can learn.

» Cases and point scoring should be balanced, so that every team has a fair chance of performing well in the round.

» Teams should still have to give their best effort to negotiate well, even against less experienced or skilled opposition.

» Each negotiation case should contain a specific lesson for students to discover and internalise through their interactions.

Circuit StructureFulfilling these principles will require a new, innovative circuit structure, built especially for teaching negotiation:

» Each round will be short or long preparation, depending on year level, with a 2 to 2.5 hour duration after a school day.

» The circuit will feature 4 preliminary rounds and a maximum of 4 finals rounds each season, depending on number of entrants.

» Finals rounds will feature a unique upper and lower bracket structure, that rewards the highest placing teams from preliminaries.

» Teams will be scored on three factors in each round: Outcome, Collaboration, and Reputation.

» “Outcome” will give teams points for achieving their interests in the negotiation, given by their case notes.

» “Collaboration” will give teams a point bonus if they can find a solution that works for both parties, in addition to achieving their goals.

» “Reputation” will assign teams points for behaving ethically and professionally, and engaging all their team members.

» All cases and point systems will be balanced by experienced Envoy Negotiation staff, to give each team an equal shot at victory.

» Selection for finals rounds will be primarily based on average score across all rounds (and quality of outcomes) — not total “wins”.

» Adjudicators will talk through lessons learned from the negotiation case, in addition to giving each team feedback.
