UQ-Fudan MBA iLab Consulting Program

Not the usual consulting teamEach iLab project is delivered by a consulting team of ten MBA students - five from Fudan University and five from UQ Business School. Selection is based on academic performance and a rigorous interview process. The consulting team is mentored by faculty and industry experts from the respective schools.

iLab consulting teams typically comprise of individuals who are highly-experienced leaders in their respective fields and industries. They bring a wealth of specialist knowledge, creative problem-solving skills, and industry-understanding to the process, to the benefit of the client.

Offered exclusively in Australaisa by UQ Business School

About the iLab Consulting ProgramThe iLab began as an experiential learning program for Fudan MBA students in 2005, and has since completed more than 200 projects for more than 100 domestic and international partner organisations. In Australasia, UQ Business School is Fudan University School of Management’s exclusive iLab partner.

The UQ-Fudan MBA iLab Consulting Program

The mission of the iLab is to provide innovative, operational solutions that add value to the partner organisations.

The UQ – Fudan MBA iLab Consulting Program (iLab) is an opportunity for Australian businesses, not-for-profits, non-governmental organisations, and governments to make lasting improvements to their performance.

The iLab is a six-month consulting project involving teams of outstanding MBA students from Fudan University School of Management, China and the UQ Business School at The University of Queensland, Australia. Under the guidance of leading faculty and industry experts from both universities, the iLab teams develop tailored, innovative, and decision-orientated deliverables for their clients.

The iLab caters to a range of projects, including Chinese market entry or expansion projects, capital-raising strategies, commercialisation recommendations, and discovery projects, such as international industry best practice research and methods of localised application. Common iLab projects include:

• developing a China-specific marketing plan and strategy for existing products/services

• deciding what product/service offerings to choose for Chinese market entry

• identifying new segments/creative applications for existing products/services

• executing deep research to enhance marketing decisions

• creating a go-to-market strategy for new products in development

• committing resources for a thorough evaluation before investing in China.

• Local knowledge: the Fudan team has ‘boots on the ground’ in China, providing direct access to local markets and contacts.

• Experience: over a decade of substantial financial success, with millions of dollars in additional annual revenue produced for clients.

• Breadth: success in a wide variety of countries, sectors and client challenges.

• Depth: access to the best of the world’s MBA students – backed by faculty, administration, alumni, and other expert networks from the world’s top business schools – resulting in an extraordinary depth of knowledge, range of contacts, and quality control.

• Data-driven insights: sound operational plans based on solid high-quality primary data, uniquely obtained for each client.

• Innovation: every project goes that extra mile to provide the client with innovative solutions – teams never stick to the same patterns.

• Utility: beyond the report, every project includes ‘bring alive’ activities, to introduce the client to contacts who can further help them implement their strategy.

The iLab is one of the world’s great investments, providing top-tier consulting services at a fraction of the cost of a conventional consulting engagement. As the iLab is primarily an academic learning experience, the client is only charged the costs directly related to academics expenses, including student travel, research, and administrative office support.

Additionally, eligible businesses can access federal government funding for export market development or research, to offset the project costs.

With partner universities in many areas of the world, there is the potential to perform consultancy projects under the iLab in multiple markets. These projects are undertaken by MBA students from three or more leading international business schools.

Investing in the future

Past projects

Place Design Group is an international planning and design firm with teams across Australia, China and South East Asia. In 2015, a UQ and Fudan consulting team developed a three year strategic roadmap for Place Design Group to ensure its sustainable growth in China.

“Given Place Design Group’s position within China as an international Australian firm, this was a unique opportunity to partner with teams from both China and Australia. The research developed and strategies formed would not have been possible without this partnership and provided a highly valuable outcome. This is a dynamic opportunity for any firm working across China/Australia or considering entering into the Chinese market.”Shaun Munday, Managing Director Place Design Group

What are the bring-alive sessions?Bring alive sessions are a series of meetings or events designed to connect the client with the research the iLab team has conducted, and add value to the process.
