About the Trust 3

About usWe are the leading provider of mental health services across south west London and a beacon of excellence for many of our national mental health services. We want to help people experiencing a mental health problem get the treatment and support they need as quickly and effectively as possible. The emphasis of our services is on recovery which means helping people to get on with their lives and to focus on the things that are important to them. We serve 1.1million people across the London boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth and employ more than 2,000 staff who provide care and treatment to approximately 20,000 people from south west London and beyond at any given moment. Our Trust headquarters are in the impressive grounds of Springfield University Hospital in Tooting and we also operate in many other locations throughout the London and the south east. An innovative and rapidly growing organisation that is helping to challenge stigma and redefine the mental health landscape in the UK, we have more than 100 clinical teams across the Trust, working to make sure that high quality patient centred care is our key priority.

“I was only on the ward for 10 hours, but during this time I was treated with dignity, patience and care.”

Overview of our servicesWe want to help people experiencing a mental health problem get the treatment and support they need as quickly and effectively as possible.

The emphasis of our services is on recovery which means helping people to get on with their lives and to focus on the things that are important to them. As well as health and social care, we can support people to do things like get work, keep an existing job, sort out accommodation or deal with family issues.

We support people to remain in their own homes and communities as much as possible, and to only admit people to hospital when it is clearly necessary and for the shortest amount of time needed to get better.

The services we provide are commissioned by local commissioners, called CCGs or clinical commissioning Groups. CCGs are groups of GPs who decide what services they should provide for their local population.

You can find more information about specific services on our website.

“The team is exactly that - A Team. There is continuity of care. There is excellent communication. I have been so fortunate to have the calibre of care that I received. In my opinion they should be held as the gold standard of care.”

About the Trust 5

Our staffOur services are provided by our dedicated clinical staff. You may be seen by a nurse, a social worker, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, or another specialist therapist. Everyone you see is there to help you and is fully qualified to do so.

Our qualified staff are supported by health care assistants and others, who are highly trained and work under the supervision of a qualified member of staff to ensure that the care you get is of the highest standard.

Of the 2000 staff we employ, about three quarters are employed in directly caring for people who use our services.

As a teaching trust, we help to train all groups of clinical staff, and you may sometimes see a doctor or a nurse for example who is still training. These trainees will always be supervised by a qualified member of staff, appropriate to their level of training.

Our clinical staff are supported by administrative staff in the community teams, clinics and hospitals where you receive your treatment. These people make sure that your notes are available and up to date, that letters are sent to your GP and that new appointments are booked for you.

And in support of all those staff we have our corporate staff, responsible for such things as ensuring our suppliers get paid, new staff are recruited, staff get opportunities for further training, our buildings are maintained and cleaned, and food is available for people who have to stay in hospital.
