Germany‘s northernmost university, situated in the Ger-man-Danish border region, is a young university. Founded in 1946 by the British, it was awarded university status in 2000 and since 2014 it has been known as the “Europa-Universität”. With around 5000 students it is a compara-tively small university. The main study programs focus on teacher training and international management, as well as on environmental sciences/sustainable development and interdisciplinary European studies.
The location in the border region is ideal for a universi-ty that wants to live the European dream of intercultural encounters and explore its reality. For over twenty years, the Europa-Universität Flensburg and the Danish Syddansk Universitet have been working together closely. Their joint degree courses in economics and social sciences offer stu-dents the opportunity to obtain degrees from both univer-sities simultaneously.
The region is characterized by beaches, wind and the sea. Situated directly on the Fjord, with its impressive old build-ings, low rents, a lively cultural scene and close proximity to Scandinavia, Flensburg offers excellent living and study-ing conditions.
Duration: six semesters (180 CP)Degree: Bachelor of Arts
This Bachelor is an interdisciplinary study program, focusing on the cultural and social sciences of Europe. Empirical research methods, as well as hermeneutical methods of critical think-ing, enable students to work in interdisciplinary settings. One of the particular features throughout this program is its project-based application of scientific knowledge in the fields of re-search, journalism, art and scenography, or entrepreneurship, which prepares students for dealing with the practical chal-lenges of their future careers. As an international B.A., with all classes taught in English, the program requires the completion of one semester abroad.
The 1st and 2nd semesters are designed as preparatory. Students are introduced to the main area “Topics and Disci- plines”: How Europe is conceived and discussed in Cultural Stud-ies and Social Sciences. In the area “Doing Europe,” they are introduced to scientific methodology, as well as to the practical fields of research, journalism, art and scenography, or entre- preneurship, in which students, later on, might apply for practical training and jobs.
In the 3rd semester students need to choose one of two focus topics: either European Cultures or European Society. From then onward, students must select 10 modules, within their chosen focus topic, and 4 modules out of the other focus topic. Within the chosen focus students deepen their scientific knowledge
in the area “Topics and Disciplines,” as well as their practi-cal abilities in the area “Doing Europe,” by preparing projects in one of the following fields: research, journalism, art and scenography, or entrepreneurship.
The 4th and 5th semesters are organized so as to make it eas- ier for students to choose doing their semester abroad during this period of time. To make the integration abroad smoother, students are encouraged to take part in the language courses offered by the Language Center of the Europa-Universität Flensburg.
In the 6th semester students write their B.A. thesis, with the support of a colloquium and other scientific courses.
Introduction phase (1 and 2 semesters): — The area “Topics and Disciplines” covers an introduction to Europe from the disciplinary perspectives of philosophy, cul-ture, education, art, and media, as well as sociology, politics, economics, geography, and European law. — The area “Doing Europe” focuses on research methods, as well as on a first introduction to the project-fields of research, journalism, art and scenography, and entrepreneurship.
Development phase (3 and 4 semesters): — The area “Topics and Disciplines” subdivides into two differ-ent focus points: “European Cultures” or “European Society,” from which the students focus mainly on one, while still maintaining some contact with the other.— The area “Doing Europe” revolves around projects with relevant topics related to Europe, which can be implemented through one of the four available fields: research, journalism, art and scenography, or entrepreneurship. Research methods are also featured.
Deepening phase (5 and 6 semesters):— In the area “Topics and Disciplines” the chosen focus point, “European Cultures” or “European Society”, is deepened, namely through the interdisciplinary approach to current prob- lems and debates related to European cultures or society.— In the area “Doing Europe” individual work in one of the four available fields (research, journalism, art and scenogra-phy, or entrepreneurship) is emphasized.— The 6th semester is dedicated to writing the Bachelor Thesis. In a colloquium students prepare to present their results at a conference.
