About Chowder BayChowder Bay, named after whalers who made ‘chowder’ from the bay’s abundant seafood, is located on the southern side of Sydney’s Middle Head peninsula.
Nestled between a stunning harbour-side frontage and a steep backdrop
of natural bushland, Chowder Bay was opened to the public in 2000
following decades of military occupation.
The area features a complex of historic buildings and facilities originally
established as a Submarine Miners Depot, and later used as barracks and
mess buildings for the Australian military.
The buildings have since been carefully restored by the Sydney Harbour
Federation Trust and they now house a range of organisations and Federation Trust and they now house a range of organisations and Federation Trust
businesses offering diverse visitor experiences.

Headland Park—a new parkland created by the Harbour Trust.

Things to see and do

Day tripsCatch a bus from Wynyard to Chowder Bay. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach whilst the kids play on the sand or in the playground, then walk along the bush track to Taronga Zoo to catch a ferry back to Circular Quay.
Hire a water taxi to take you from Darling Harbour across to Chowder Bay for a corporate lunch at the restaurant or to delight overseas guests with a unique harbour-side meal.
Take a ferry to Taronga Zoo and then the connecting bus to Balmoral. Walk along the bush track from Balmoral to Chowder Bay then cool off with a snorkelling session, followed by a relaxing café lunch. Return to the city by bus to Wynyard.

Walk to Chowder Bay along the bush track from Taronga Zoo (via Bradleys
Head), Mosman, Clifton Gardens, Georges Heights or Balmoral.
By bus
Sydney Buses route 244 connects Chowder Bay with Wynyard in Sydney’s CBD Sydney Buses route 244 connects Chowder Bay with Wynyard in Sydney’s CBD Sydney Buses
and route 228 connects Clifton Gardens with Milsons Point in North Sydney.
Both routes travel via Neutral Bay, Cremorne, Spit Junction and Mosman.

Chowder Bay is located outside Building 2 (Other Ranks’ Quarters 2) [F2]. The
bus stop at Clifton Gardens is located at Morella Rd [A3].
By water
Vessels (including water taxis) may drop off and pick up passengers at the
public wharf at Clifton Gardens and may anchor off the beach. The naval
re-fuelling wharf on the eastern point of Chowder Bay [E4] and the jetties in
front of Building 10 (the Boatshed) [D3] are available for public use by prior
arrangement with Ripples, LIW3, SIMS, and Land’s Edge.
Catch the ferry to Taronga Zoo from Circular Quay and connect with Sydney Buses
route 238 at the wharf. Alight on Middle Head Rd (before the bus turns left at
Beaconsfield Rd for Balmoral) and walk 20 minutes to Chowder Bay via Georges

By car
Chowder Bay can be reached by car along Chowder Bay Rd, via Middle Head Rd,
Mosman. There is limited parking along Chowder Bay Rd and metered parking in
the public car park at Clifton Gardens [A3] (which is accessed via Thompson St,
off Bradleys Head Rd, Mosman). Pedestrian access to Chowder Bay from the car
park at Clifton Gardens is via the beach.
Chowder Bay is a shared vehicle and pedestrian
area, so please take care when driving and parking your vehicle.

Sydney Harbour.
Accessibility
Wheelchair-accessible parking is located opposite Buildings 2 (Other Ranks’
Quarters 2) [F2] and 20 (Sergeants’ Mess) [G1] at Chowder Bay, and in the
public car park at Clifton Gardens [A3]. As access from Clifton Gardens to
Chowder Bay is across the beach, this maybe unsuitable for some visitors.
The bush tracks include some stairs and some low–medium inclines. There are
steep stairs that are unsuitable for wheelchairs, strollers or those with walking
difficulties, beside Building 7 (Submarine Miners’ Depot) [D3] leading to and
from the beach and the buildings at the lower deck at Chowder Bay.
Wheelchair-accessible toilets are located at Building 2 (Other Ranks’
Quarters 2) [F2]. The playground at Clifton Gardens includes a wheelchair-
friendly ‘liberty’ swing [C2].
ActivitiesBoat building

restore and construct wooden boats. A special viewing area is set up in the
boatshed on weekdays to encourage visitors to observe this age-old trade.
Dog walking
Off-leash dog walking is permitted on the grassed area of Clifton Gardens
Reserve all day Monday to Friday, and before 9.00 am or after 4.00 pm on
weekends and public holidays. On-leash dog walking is permitted at any time
(excluding prohibited areas such as the adjoining Sydney Harbour National
Park land; beach areas and public swimming enclosures, and within 10m of Park land; beach areas and public swimming enclosures, and within 10m of Park
playgrounds and food preparation areas).
Kayaking

Marine Science Open Days

Snorkelling & diving
Explore the myriad of temperate marine life in Chowder Bay with PLUNGE Diving
– Sydney Harbour’s only fully-serviced scuba dive and snorkelling centre.
Swimming
The netted enclosure at the western end of Chowder Bay is ideal for swimming.
The water is shallow and easily accessed from the sand.

Miners’ Depot, gun emplacements and underground tunnels which formed part
of Sydney’s early defence fortifications.
Walking
Chowder Bay is a convenient rest point on the coastal walk between Taronga
Zoo and Balmoral. The walking tracks offer stunning harbour views, scenic
bushland and peaceful respite from the city’s hustle and bustle. From outside
Building 2 (Other Ranks’ Quarters 2) [E2], the track leads up to the Georges
Head Lookout, along to the artists’ precinct at Lower Georges Heights and
beyond to Balmoral Beach. Approximate distances are listed on the map.

Accessibility
Wheelchair-accessible parking is located opposite Buildings 2 (Other Ranks’
Quarters 2) [F2] and 20 (Sergeants’ Mess) [G1] at Chowder Bay, and in the
public car park at Clifton Gardens [A3]. As access from Clifton Gardens to
Chowder Bay is across the beach, this maybe unsuitable for some visitors.
The bush tracks include some stairs and some low–medium inclines. There are
steep stairs that are unsuitable for wheelchairs, strollers or those with walking
difficulties, beside Building 7 (Submarine Miners’ Depot) [D3] leading to and
from the beach and the buildings at the lower deck at Chowder Bay.
Wheelchair-accessible toilets are located at Building 2 (Other Ranks’
Quarters 2) [F2]. The playground at Clifton Gardens includes a wheelchair-
friendly ‘liberty’ swing [C2].

restore and construct wooden boats. A special viewing area is set up in the
boatshed on weekdays to encourage visitors to observe this age-old trade.
Dog walking
Off-leash dog walking is permitted on the grassed area of Clifton Gardens
Reserve all day Monday to Friday, and before 9.00 am or after 4.00 pm on
weekends and public holidays. On-leash dog walking is permitted at any time
(excluding prohibited areas such as the adjoining Sydney Harbour National

playgrounds and food preparation areas).

Snorkelling & diving
Explore the myriad of temperate marine life in Chowder Bay with PLUNGE Diving
– Sydney Harbour’s only fully-serviced scuba dive and snorkelling centre.
Swimming
The netted enclosure at the western end of Chowder Bay is ideal for swimming.
The water is shallow and easily accessed from the sand.

Miners’ Depot, gun emplacements and underground tunnels which formed part
of Sydney’s early defence fortifications.
Walking
Chowder Bay is a convenient rest point on the coastal walk between Taronga
Zoo and Balmoral. The walking tracks offer stunning harbour views, scenic
bushland and peaceful respite from the city’s hustle and bustle. From outside
Building 2 (Other Ranks’ Quarters 2) [E2], the track leads up to the Georges
Head Lookout, along to the artists’ precinct at Lower Georges Heights and
beyond to Balmoral Beach. Approximate distances are listed on the map.
