Overall Level of Performance (maximum 24 marks)

Clarification of terminology: Integrating and synthesising – Taking a diverse range of design ideas, graphics knowledge and skills, blending them into a coherent whole or combine them in a new way so as to produce an effective outcome. Coherence – A diverse range of elements and ideas that are brought together effectively as a unit, with a logical consistency, clarity and unity of thought and/or purpose. Innovative – Ideas that lead to something new and/or different, whether it is something original or renewed, in terms of either aesthetics or function. Sophisticated – Ideas that engage a complexity of design thinking, whether reflected through in-depth and refined understanding, or utilising multiple layers of meaning. Articulate Outcome – An outcome that demonstrates clarity of intent or purpose. Visual Communication Techniques – the modes, media and methods associated with visually communicating information. Visual Communication Strategies – the visually based approaches that that act as design tools for the generating and developing of design ideas.

Commentaries  for  the  Scholarship  DVC  exemplars  2012

Ablution  Block  (6,  4,  4  =  14)

This  spatial  design  project  exemplifies  a  low  Scholarship  submission  that  sits  just  above  the  cut  off  for  2012.

The   strengths   of   this   submission   lie   in   the   Design   Thinking   strand   from   a   conceptual  perspective.   There  are   some  very  good   idea  generation  and  exploration.   This   is   especially  the   case   in   the   early   stages   of   the   project   where   there   is   the   effective   generation   and  investigation   of   architectural   form.   Gathered   sources   of   inspiration   are   integrated   well  throughout   the   formative   stages   of   the   project   with   many   of   the   images   used   having  thematic   links   to   the   waterfront   location.   Exploratory   sketches   are   very   effectively  employed   and   there   is   a   sophistication   of   thinking   demonstrated   through   the   continual  revisiting  of   the  orange  strips  as  a  central   idea  that   is   reiterated  both  for  the  exterior  and  interior  of  the  design.

With  regards  to  the  Synthesis  strand,  the  submission  is  not  as  strong  by  comparison.  Where  the  exploration  of  ideas  is  so  strong,  the  resolution  and  refining  is  not  so  extensive  in  terms  of   the   progression   of   the   design   moving   forward.   The   synthesising   of   the   interior   and  exterior   that   is   informing   each   other   and   manifested   through   a   coherent   whole   is   not  convincingly   demonstrated,   though   there   is   the   good   consideration   given   to   the  organisation  of  the  floor  play  layout.

For   the   Visual   Communication   strand,   the   candidate   shows   some   very   good   quality  sketching  employing  the  effective  use  of  pen  and  orange  marker.  The  considered  use  of  the  orange  accent  colour  and  graphic  arrows  also  allows  the  viewer   to   follow  the  narrative  of  design   thinking   that   runs   through   the   project.   There   is   some   good   refinement   in   the  techniques   and   strategies   used,   but   there   isn’t   the   quality   final   presentation   pages   that  visually   promote   the   outcome   as   required   to   be   evidenced   for   high   quality   presentation.  While   the   layout   is   effective,   the   selected   drawings   are   not   the   best   for   convincingly  communicating  the  design,  with  some  of  the  drawings  being  too  small  and  the  larger  ones  remaining  rather  ambiguous.
