Assessing and Developing CompetenciesApproaches and Resources

for the 21st Century Classroom

With Alberta leading the way with its work on 21st century competencies, there is now broad agreement across Canada and North America around the types of skills students need for success in tomorrow's world.

•But how can our classrooms systematically develop and assess these skills? •How can innovation and critical thinking become hallmarks of student learning? •And how can these strategies be scaled in ways that no longer rely solely on the creativity of individual teachers?

Assessing and Developing Competencies: April 16-17, 2013

Implementation scenarios….

Consider team planning, grade cluster planning, review curricula matrix

Assign a few Instant Challenges to familiarize students with process

Begin by showing video--what are the 4Cs? Discussion prompt

Collaboratively decide on the Team Challenge

Begin with a familiar instructional approach (e.g., literature circles)

Collaborate and co-construct assessment criteria

Have a grouping strategy in place, group students according to common interests, hobbies (4-5 students in a group)

Utilize Backwards by Design Instructional model to identify learning targets

Allocate time to one discipline over a series of weeks (25-30 min) or integrate across a disciplines (math, science, language arts)

It’s Our Turn!
