• DEFINITION:

•a DATA TABLE is an organized arrangement of information in labeled rows and columns

•DATA TABLES:

•Are the easiest way to organize data for interpretation.

• PLANNING:

•planning a data table AHEAD OF TIME is a very good idea.

•make sure you have columns to record the changes in both the manipulated and the responding variables

•manipulated/responding ???

HINTS FOR MAKING DATA TABLES

•Be sure to label the rows and columns accurately

•Be sure to identify the units of your data table

•Make sure the manipulated and responding variables are included in your data table

Imagine this experiment:

Suppose we wanted to track the rate of growth of a type of tomato plant

We plant the plant Then, we record its growth each day over a number of days

ü

Page 6: Ability to customize to convert “raw data” into a usable data table AIM: What is a data table?

Our Tomato plant Grew to height of:

2 inches on day 24 inches on day 5

8 inches on day 1010 inches on day 1514 inches on day 20

Put this data into a

correct DATA TABLE

Table of Plant Days vs. Plant Height:

Is this format better for reviewing

(and sharing) our results ?

• Tips for Data Tables:

•If you are planning to make measurements at regular intervals, then consider creating your data table ahead of time

•Data tables can and should be redone!

•Rough drafts and Final draft are acceptable for data tables; BUT NEVER change your actual data !!!

Consider this experiment

Suppose we had two plants

Plant 1 received Nitrogen Fertilizer

Plant 2 received none

Page 10: Ability to customize to convert “raw data” into a usable data table AIM: What is a data table?

Plant #1 Has fertilizer

Grew to height of2 inches on day 24 inches on day 5

8 inches on day 1010 inches on day 1514 inches on day 20

Plant 2 No fertilizer

Grew to height of2 inches on day 24 inches on day 5

7 inches on day 108 inches on day 159 inches on day 20

You make the data table!

Will a house plant grow better in a warm room or a colder room

What do we need to do this experiment?

Identical plants, with identical water fertilizer and sun.

One plant in a warm place and one in a colder place

Results of ExperimentAt 10 days the plant #1 grew 5 cm. After 15 days it now reached 7cm. After 20 days it got to 10. At 25 days it was 12 cm and after 30 days it reached 13 cm.

Plant #2 plant grew to a height of about 5 cm in 10 days. After 15 days it reached 12. At 20 days it was 15cm tall. At 25 days the height was 18 cm and at 30 days the height was 19 cm.

The temperature of the room for plant #1 was 20 degrees C and plant #2 was at 25degrees C.
