Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams, was a woman who undertook the duties of fighting for equality.

A Life Through Letters…

John left Abigail to raise the family and manage the farm alone, over 2,000 letters sustained their relationship.

Abigail opposed slavery.

Abigail fought for many women rights

including the right to own property.

+Although Abigail did not receive formal education, she believed the nation needed women with

proper schooling in order to excel.

Abigail did not let laws prevent her from carrying out

her ambitions. She successfully

managed a farm to her name, even if women were not allowed to do so.

+Abigail was the

first First Lady to

occupy the White

House.

She was

also the

first

woman to

be wife of

a president

and

mother of

another.

Before her death, Abigail ignored the laws and

created a will, an action only men were allowed to

fulfill.
