A meeting was held on the 9 Aug 2006 with the ward councillor, region 11, city council to address the short, medium and long terms problems at Progress. Nothing substantial has come of it thus far. As far as leasing Progress is concerned there is nothing to report except the Jhb. Property fails to respond to enquiries asking about the public tender. The last reply was received on the 12 Dec 2006 stating that they are awaiting for a response from the ward councilor. No word has been received from the ward councilor by us as well. Thought must be given as how to ensure that the ground , nets and especially the pitch is maintained at world class standards. EQUIPMENT The need for boundry markers cannot be emphasized. UNIFORM To complement the kit thought most be given for batting and fielding eaps. OPPORTUNITIES Courses in umpiring, coaching and score-writing are available at GCB. FINANCE Fees were collected timeously. JUNIOR CRICKET Consideration must be given to employing Manager’s and Umpire’s to assist with the running of the teams as manpower on a voluntary basis is all but dried up. MEETINGS HELD;

Last year’s AGM was held on the 29 June 2006. A further four Council and Executive meetings were also held.

MINUTES:

They were taken on rotation by the Secretary and Assistant Secretary.

FINANCE:/W

Collection of fees from the cricket and soccer sub-clubs remains good.No major fund raising drives were held during the year.Tax Returns for 2004, 2005 and 2006 have been submitted to the SA Revenue Services .These have been assessed and we have exempted from paying tax.A donation of R500 was also made to the Lenasia Bowling Club for the use of its premises.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

No project/organization was identified to benefit.

Pirates CC have adopted a shelter for homeless youth and at least 6 of them are included in their Saturday cricket team. They are coached in playing the game and performing umpiring duties. We need to do something similar, initially donating equipment, then maybe coaching and eventually integrating such an organisation into our Club.

CLUBS:

Cricket affiliated a Saturday and Sunday team each for the 2006/7 season and a soccer team was affiliated to the winter league.

PreliminariesAzad Swaraj Sporting Club affiliated a senior soccer team in the LSA league during the 2006 season. It was decided not to affiliate a team into the district summer league.

Region demarcationDuring the 2006 season a number of changes were made to region demarcation by SAFA. The areas of Lenasia, Daxina, Ennerdale and Orange Farm were grouped into a region now known as Deep South. The administration of football in the area now lies with the Deep South body. The body was elected during a special meeting called by SAFA.

The Deep South body has given a mandate to the Lenasia Soccer Association to run junior soccer in the area. The administration of senior soccer will remain with the Deep South body.

PerformanceThe logs for the LSA (2006 season) are shown below.

Clearly performance has not been up to scratch. Some of the challenges encountered in the past season included:

• Not being able to field full strength teams at times due to unavailability/injuries to players.• Lack of discipline amongst players• Lack of a qualified coach

Senior soccerThe senior soccer team has reconvened this year with a squad of 20. Training takes place twice a week. The team will affiliate to the Deep South league. At present, it is not clear when this league will kick off.

Junior soccerThe affiliation of a junior soccer team was simply not possible due to lack of manpower. There are still only two people involved in the administration of soccer. IVe remain hopeful that more people will join the soccer sub-club who are willins to involve themselves in administrative capacities.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

I t gives me great pleasure to present my report to this meeting on the 65 '̂’ anniversary of the Club.

The major achievements last season was the affiliation of a second Sunday cricket team as well the appointment of a soccer coach.

The 3 cricket teams as well as the soccer team performed well and fulfilled all their duties, on and off the field.

The fund raising event in Feb 2008 displayed our capacity to organize and mobilize.

All the above bodes well for the future of the Club.

On top of it the administration of the Club has attracted energetic individuals who will ensure that the Club stays on a firm footing for the next 65 years !

I w ant to take this opportunity to thank our Treasurer Thiraj Bhowan for doing a sterling job, not only this year but for the past umpteen years.

But challenges lie ahead -

1. Ensure that the Progress nets are repaired.

2. Endeavour that the soccer team practices on a field that have adequate floodlights and goal posts.

3. Pave the way for the formation of jun io r/you th soccer/cricket teams.

4. Raise funds to ensure that we always cover our expenses.

5. Increase spectator support at our soccer/cricket matches.

6. Acquire premises to store our records, trophies, banners, photographs etc.

7. Introduce other codes of sport eg table tennis, darts etc

8 . Review our Constitution to make it more relevant to our activities.

As far as 1 and 2 is concerned a new strategy has to be devised.Council,GCB,SAFA are all aware of the problem but w hat do we do to translate the problem into a solution.

The rest of the challenges will only be tackled if we "get our hands dirty". There is no better solution than hard work instead of imbizos, consultants, bosberaads ,workshops ,high level meetings , fact finding missions, commission of enquiries etc etc

Page 11: A.B.GANDABHAI SECRETARY....Jayesh Bhana 0 0- - 25 Jeetesh Ravjee 00 - 0 Roshan Bhana 0-Roshan Naran 0-Rushil Naran 0 0 - 0 9 Sanjay Patel 0 0 - 0 0 0 AZAD SWARAJ SPORTING CLUB SECRETARIAL

The brutui truth is that if we do not "get our hands dirty" who w ill. So let us roll up our sleeves ONCE again and recruit people to assist us in running our sports.

Taking into account the dire economic straits the m ajority of our citizens find themselves in let us celebrate our 65*^ anniversary with sensitivity.

Lastly my congratulations to all the players for their participation as well to all the trophy winners, and a big thank you to everyone for assisting in w hatever way in the running of our Club.

As the late SAMORA MACHEL said :'THE SUCCESS OF THE REVOLUTION DEPENDS ON THE T IN Y DAILY ACTS OF EACH OF US'.i.e. the success of the CLUB depends on the T IN Y acts of each and every

one of us.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

It gives me great pleasure to present my report to this meeting on the 66*** anniversary of the Club.

The past season was certainly not a memorable one for the Club.

The senior soccer team was disbanded after making numerous efforts to keep it going, no Sunday cricket team was affiliated and the effort to affiliate one junior soccer team proved fruitless.

The above is certainly a concern as the core business of the Club to organise sport is proving to be elusive. Our Club is not the only one troubled by dwindling membership and therefore we need to transform our approach - promote rather than organise sport. This is a far reaching approach but I am failing to come up with an action plan to organise or increase the playing membership in our Club.

Promoting sport can be done in a number of ways:1. Donate R2000 each to ten organisations needing funds for buying equipment or

to cover travelling expenses or to attend coaching sessions etc.2. Fund an existing sports club that has a solid base of junior sports teams but lack

finances to move to the next level.3. Sponsor an individual who has financial difficulty in raising funds to travel

locally or overseas to partake in a sports competition.4. Sponsor tournaments, coaching clinics etc.5. Join existing sports projects and assist them financially.

The list is endless- we just need to decide whether we want to promote sports in the manner outlined above.

Needless to say we can also hire managers and coaches to run teams under our banner but that requires members of the Club to supervise them. An option worth exploring.

Ironically, with the Confederation Cup and the IPL our Club is in no position to take advantage of the surge of interest in soccer and cricket.

Also nothing stops us from forming table tennis, darts, squash teams as they require smaller number of players.

Courses are also available in respect of score writing, umpiring, coaching, pitch preparations etc. and I encourage our members to grab these opportunities with both hands.

On the sports field the three cricket teams fulfilled their fixtures but did not perform up to their ability.Practise, practise, practise cannot be overemphasised.

The state of the Progress’ nets remains poor and the pitch just about playable.

Lastly, my congratulations to all the players for their participation , and a big thank you to everyone for assisting in whatever way in the running of our Club.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT- SA 4- SEASON 2008/9

After convincingly winning the SA 6 last season we got a double promotion to SA 4.

Although the standard in SA 4 was not high we fared badly , not because of lack of ability but lack of application in the batting department. We finished up position 11 out of 16.

On the field of play only one round of fixtures were played.

We played fifteen matches, won four, drew four and lost seven giving us the total of twenty-four points.

Our batting seldom got going which resulted in many losses.

The highest individual score was 67 by Dansuk Lalu against Heidelburg and the highest total score was 255 against Daxina.

On the bowling front Umesh and Raju Patel took five wickets each against Hilson Park, 8 November 2008 and against Azad Swaraj Sporting 2 on the 24 January 2009 respectively.Sanjay Patel produced figures of 5-4-1-3 against Roodeport City on the 17 January 2009.

Also 24th January 2009 was a historic day in that 2 Azad teams met for the very first time in its 65 years of existence.

Another historic event also took place...we were referred to the DC of the GCB. We lost the points for the match by refusing to continue to play the match after unsportsman like behaviour by Marlboro and both teams were placed under probation up to April 2010. We will have to dig up the archives as to when last one of our cricket teams appeared in front of a DC !

I suppose after finishing up in the top three positions for the past 6-7 years this season was disappointing so we have to put the season behind us and come out guns blazing.

Versus Witwatersrand at Tech One on the 4 Oct 2008.Weather-blustery.Wicket-greenish top Outfield- patchy Toss-lostOvers-35 each due to late start as gates were locked at the Tennis Court end.

We contained them with wickets falling regularly-after 20 overs they were 76-3 but a few dropped catches thereafter enabled them to reach 174 for 9 at the end of 35 overs.

Pravesh and Ramesh took 3 wickets each, Umesh 2 and Raju 1.

Catches......... Pravesh and Piyush 1 each.

Run rate needed 4.97 per over.

We lost the 1®‘ wicket with 2 runs on the board and the next at 33 runs after 7 overs.

Ramesh (37 runs ) and Piyush ( 30 runs ) then put on 40 runs before Ramesh was out going for his 4*̂ six.

Wickets then fell regularly and with the light fading we were 141-9 at the 27̂ ̂over, 148-9 at the 28'^ and 29*̂ over.

Tension was high as they needed one wicket for victory and we had to maintain 5 runs an over without losing a wicket.

30'^ over we pushed the score to 150-9 and they dropped Pravesh as he drove powerfully to the on side.

The match was still in our hands........

It was then agreed that due to poor light the 31®* over will be the last............score 5 runs without losing a wicket.

Believe it or not the bowler bowled wides with his 2,3.4.5.6 balls conceding 8 wides and we clinched the match on a better run rate. ..5.09.

Pravesh and Ajit remained not out.............. and they conceded 35 wides during the match !
