Leading in the 15th CenturyThe University of Aberdeen is Scotland's third oldest university, founded in 1495 as Columbus was opening up the New Worldand the Renaissance was spreading throughout Europe.William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen and Chancellor ofScotland, established King's College to train doctors, teachersand clergy for the communities of northern Scotland, andlawyers and administrators to serve the Scottish Crown. This fledgling university boasted, from 1497 , the first chair ofmedicine in the English-speaking world.

The 15 thcentury remains very much alive in King's College Chapel, which is still in regular use, offering an oasis of peace, beautyand a sense of history in the daily life of a university nowfocused on the needs of the new millennium.www.abdn.ac.uk/about/heritage

Life in Scotland"There are going to be many tears shed when I leave Scotland. This has been the best experience and, without a doubt, thebest years of my life so far."Nicole, Albion College, Michigan, USA

Higher Education in ScotlandEducation is one of Scotland's greatest talents. Every yearScotland welcomes international students from over 180nationalities.

Scotlands business and education institutions are recognisedworld-leaders in many areas.

Scots are famed for their friendliness and zest for life and thiscan be seen first-hand during the year-round programme ofevents and festivals. Museums and galleries showcase a widevariety of collections and with plenty to offer in the way ofrestaurants and shopping, Scotland doesnt disappoint.

Scotland, to many people around the world, is a countrycharacterised by tartan, castles, clans and spectacular scenery.

However, Scotland is a vibrant and exciting country thatcelebrates a rich diversity of cultural experience. From stunninglandscapes to cosmopolitan cities, Scotland offers up a uniquemix of tradition and innovation.

A rich heritage creates an ideal base for thriving arts andcreative industries. Many of the worlds most innovativeideas and inventions continue to come from the birthplace ofcreations that have changed and shaped the modern world.Although Scotland is one of the four nations that make upthe United Kingdom, it retains a distinctive cultural identityrepresented by its own unique legal and educational systems.

The Scottish higher education system has a strong tradition ofacademic excellence and has been used as the model for highereducation systems throughout the world the United Statesbeing one notable example.

Undergraduate Honours degrees in Scotland are usually fouryears in duration and are structured to ensure a great deal offlexibility during the first two years of study. Most studentsonly confirm their major at the end of their second year. Thismeans you can usually study any subjects that interest you,and even change direction as your ambitions develop! This isdifferent from the English system of undergraduate education, which is three years in duration, being more specialised fromthe beginning.

The educational culture in Scotland is very much focused onindependent learning and this is reflected in the number ofcontact hours students have with teaching staff. You mayfind that this is slightly lower than North America, and theexpectation is that a significant amount of study will bedone outside of the classroom. But dont panic! Althoughthe learning style is different, as well as the help providedin tutorials, you will also be able to see your tutor outsideof these times by booking an appointment.

Study at University of Aberdeen Curriculum ReformThere has never been a more exciting time to study at theUniversity of Aberdeen. Following an extensive review process, which saw engagement with top employers, professional bodies, academics, the Government, and current and prospectivestudents, parents and teachers, the University has takensignificant steps to modernise the structure, content, deliveryand flexibility of our degree programmes in line with major

The degrees awarded by the University of Aberdeen arerecognised and respected worldwide. Its your degree andwe believe it should be planned around you.

We admit you to a degree rather than to a subject, School orDepartment, so you can usually study any subjects whichinterest you, and even change direction as your interests andambitions develop. A Scottish Honours degree normally takesfour years to complete, so you can usually delay your finalchoice until the end of your second, or sometimes third year.

The Arts and Social Science (MA) and Science (BSc) degreesare especially flexible, Law (LLB) and Music (BTh) programmesalso offer some flexibility. Other degrees like Engineering(MEng), Medicine (MB ChB) or our Education degrees whichtrain you for a specific profession offer less flexibility, as thecontent of these courses must satisfy the relevant professionalorganisation.

In many cases, two subjects can be studied at Honours level, leading to the award of either a Joint Honours or a Major-Minor Honours degree.
