American University

Affiliate Professor, Department of Economics, College of Arts and Sciences
ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS
American University
Founding Director, Master of Arts in International Relations (online degree), 2012 – 2014
I designed the curriculum, gained approval from school and university curriculum
committees, budgeted (RCM model), recruited faculty to create courses and to serve as section
leaders, oversaw content creation, evaluated program faculty, supervised program staff,
undertook learning assessment, led recruitment activities, and made admissions decisions. (You
can learn more about the MAIR degree and see examples from classes at:
ironline.american.edu/about/student-experience/).
American University
Director of Doctoral Studies, 1999-2012 I managed all aspects of the SIS PhD program, including budgeting, recruitment, admissions,
assessment, placement and staffing. I supervised program staff and instituted several substantial
improvements to the program that cut the times to ABD and to completion of the degree by over one
year, restructured financial aid to increase net size of fellowships, and improved placement
significantly. I undertook a major initiative that greatly expanded the share of students from
