CONNECTING OUR RETIRED EMPLOYEES Abbott Connect Dear Abbott Retiree, It’s springtime here at Abbott Park: We’re wrapping up the year’s first quarter, our 2017 Annual Report was just published, and we’re looking forward to another excellent year for our company. As our Annual Report makes clear, 2017 was a truly outstanding year for Abbott. Our worldwide sales increased approximately 5 percent, to $27.4 billion. Earnings per share rose by almost 14 percent. This led to the best results for Abbott shares in 20 years. Our stock price rose almost 50 percent in 2017, hitting 20 all-time highs along the way, and once again, we generated excellent cash flow. This allowed us to return $2 billion to shareholders in the form of dividends and share repurchases. Our performance again makes us a member of the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index, which recognizes companies that have raised their dividend for at least 25 consecutive years. We’ve now done it for more than 46, and in February, we paid our 376th consecutive quarterly dividend since 1924. Those dividends, combined with growth in our stock price, resulted in a total shareholder return of 52 percent, the best in our fundamental peer group. So, again, it was a very good year for Abbott. This year, 2018, is our 130th, but our view is that we’re only as old as our last year — that Abbott is a perpetually new company with a long legacy of success that informs where we go next and how we get there. That’s a powerful combination: the experience of a company that’s succeeded for generations and the ambition and energy of a new company with fresh opportunities. The opportunities before us are as good and as promising as they’ve ever been. Our internal research and development efforts are producing breakthrough results, such as our FreeStyle Libre glucose-monitoring system for people with diabetes, and our strategic additions to the company — St. Jude Medical in our devices business and Alere in our diagnostics division — give us leading positions in new markets. The result is what we expect to be Abbott’s next great era. We’re bringing life-changing technologies to more people than ever before, helping them — and all of us in the Abbott family — to live life more fully. All the best, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer MARCH 2018 Abbott is a perpetually new company with a long legacy of success that informs where we go next and how we get there.

Abbott ConnectDear Abbott Retiree,

It’s springtime here at Abbott Park: We’re wrapping up the year’s first quarter, our 2017 Annual Report was just published, and we’re looking forward to another excellent year for our company.

All the best,

Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer

Every year since 1984, Abbott has been named to Fortune’s “Most Admired Companies” list, and this year is no exception. Not only did we rank No. 1 in our industry for the fifth year in a row, but we also came in first in our industry for people management, social responsibility, long-term investment value, quality of products/services, and global competitiveness.

Each year, Fortune — one of the world’s leading business publications — surveys top executives and directors from Fortune 1000 and Global 500 corporations to identify the companies that have the strongest reputations. Companies are evaluated on financial soundness, global competitiveness, innovation, people management, quality of management, quality of products and services, social responsibility, use of corporate assets, and value as a long-term investment.

Our innovations have made a real difference in many lives: nourishing babies, improving heart health, helping people live with less pain and fewer tremors, freeing those with diabetes from routine finger-sticks, and providing diagnostic tests that give people the health information they need to make some of their biggest life decisions. It’s these contributions and others that have made Abbott so admired around the world.

MOST ADMIRED AGAIN!

FREESTYLE LIBRE

As the global population ages, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes increases. The FreeStyle Libre system, Abbott’s breakthrough glucose monitoring technology, is changing the way people with diabetes test their glucose levels. With the FreeStyle Libre system, they no longer must endure the pain of multiple finger-sticks each day to monitor their glucose levels. Instead, they can take readings by simply swiping a reader over a small sensor worn on the back of the upper arm. With the system receiving approval in the United States last fall, more than 500,000 people in 42 countries now use the device to live fuller lives through better health.

Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre system also was recently named a 2018 BIG Innovation Award winner in the United States for the second consecutive year by the Business Intelligence Group. This award recognizes the organizations, products, and people that are bringing new ideas to life. Available now in most major markets around the world, the FreeStyle Libre system is reinforcing our reputation as a leading technology company.

Visit www.freestylelibre.us for detailed indications for use and safety information.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors is a series of competitive races comprising six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City.

Our involvement with these esteemed races helps increase the awareness and reputation of the Abbott brand around the globe. In addition, it gives Abbott colleagues the special opportunity to participate in some of the most prestigious marathons.

Now, our retirees can participate, too, by entering a lottery to receive a race bib for one of the marathons this fall, including Berlin on September 16, Chicago on October 6, and New York City on November 4.

If you are a runner and would like to enter, send an email to [email protected] by Monday, April 30, indicating that you’re an Abbott retiree. Race bib winners will also receive Abbott-branded apparel, pre- and post-race hospitality, and access to other marathon-weekend activities.* If you have already registered for one of the marathons and don’t need a bib, you may still submit your name to the address above to receive these additional perks.

Finally, Abbott has Cheer Zones at several of the marathons for those who wish to support our runners. Information on how to enter the Cheer Zone lottery will be available this summer.

*Marathon runners are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses.

DAVE THOMPSON Abbott retiree Dave Thompson was named a “2017 Distinguished Alumnus” by South Dakota State University (SDSU), from which he graduated in 1964. This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in many areas, including service to community, distinction in profession, commitment to education, and support of SDSU.

It was at SDSU that Dave was first recruited to Abbott in the nutrition division, making Similac infant formula. His Abbott career went on to span 31 years and included management roles in nutrition, diagnostics, and human resources. He was at the head of the diagnostics division in 1985 when Abbott introduced the first licensed test to detect HIV in the blood.

Dave retired in 1995 as Senior Vice President, Strategic Improvement Processes. (True to his roots, he continues to support a scholarship fund at SDSU for the dairy manufacturing and food science departments.) He currently lives in North Barrington, Illinois, with his wife of 54 years, Marilyn. He can be reached at [email protected].

CAROL McDONOUGH After their respective retirements in April 2015, Carol and Jim McDonough embarked on a lifelong dream to sail America’s Great Loop, a circumnavigation of the Eastern United States and part of Canada. The route follows an approximately 6,000-mile loop that includes the Gulf and Atlantic Intracoastal Waterways, the New York State Canals, the Canadian Canals, the Great Lakes, inland rivers, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Carol and Jim set out in October 2016 and completed the loop on September 11, 2017, earning their gold burgee flag from the American Great Loop Cruisers Association (AGLCA). Along the way, they visited historical sites, encountered ocean wildlife, sampled food in a variety of locales, and enjoyed cocktails with other Gold Loopers. Carol noted, “The loop is about the journey, not the destination. The friends we made and the memories we now share are our greatest treasures.”

Carol retired from Abbott’s diagnostics business with 23 years of service. She and Jim live in Spring City, Tennessee. They have two daughters and seven grandchildren. Carol can be reached at [email protected].

YOUNG RAN KIMRetiree Young Ran Kim recently released her memoir, The Long Road to the Sixth ROK (Republic of Korea), a story about her family’s survival during the period from post-World War II through the Korean War. Her book details how her family survived and how she came to America, received three advanced degrees, and became a productive American citizen.

During her long career, Young Ran published 22 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and authored or coauthored 33 technical patents issued in the United States, Europe, and Japan. She said the best decision she has ever made was joining Abbott in 1992 and spending the final years of her professional career with a stable and respected U.S. company.

Young Ran retired in 2006 from Abbott’s diagnostics business with 15 years of service. She currently lives in Santa Rosa, California, with her husband of 10 years, William Zane, and enjoys playing tennis to maintain her health. Her email address is [email protected].
