NORTHERN BASTION & WACHAU LABThe Northern Bastion, a historic building from the Baroque age, has been enhanced with contemporary architectural elements, thus serving as an important hub between the monastery buildings and the abbey park. The exhibition space on the first floor accommodates the “Wachau Lab” where students of Melk abbey secondary school (“the museums makers”) conceive and organize different exhibitions. The panoramic terrace allows visitors to see not only the surroundings areas – from the foothills of the Alps to the Waldviertel – but also the abbey grounds, especially the Baroque garden pavilion and the abbey park.

On the Northern Bastion’s ground floor a spacious gift shop is set up.

MINERAL COLLECTION*The mineral collection whose origins date back to the 18th century has become an extensive collection and is now displayed in the Baroque room which used to be the prelate’s library.

ABBEY PARK & GARDEN PAVILIONThe abbey gardens with the Baroque garden pavilion make up a substantial part of the entire Baroque monas-tic ensemble. The “Paradise Garden” where something fragrant, medicinal, blossoming or edible is growing all year round and which was replanted according to plans by Walahfrid Strabo (9th century), the modern “Jardin Méditerranéen”, the “Jardin Oriental” with a view of the Danube valley, “St. Benedict’s Path” which invokes meditations, the historical water basin, 250-year-old linden trees and other accents invite you to linger.

ABBEY VISITThe abbey museum in the former Imperial Rooms contains the exhibition “The Path from Yesterday to Today” which makes use of art treasures and multi-media means to tell the monastery’s 900-years history in a contemporary and multifaceted way.

The Marble Hall, the library and the abbey church are masterpieces of Baroque interior design. The abbey library is one of the most harmonious and important of the Baroque period. About 10,000 iden-tically bound books give this room its unforgettable atmosphere. The balcony between the Marble Hall and the library offers visitors an excellent view of the Danube valley and the Western façade of the abbey church.

The last and the crowning point of the visit is the abbey church which is among the most beautiful Baroque churches in the world – an undisputed text-book example of High Baroque style.

Melk Abbey, a Place of SpiritualityOne of the most important tasks of a monastery is the liturgy, the worship service, the monastic of-fices. “Let nothing, therefore, be put before the Work of God”, Saint Benedict says in his rules. This statement could be understood as the construc-tion plan for Melk abbey church. Many famous artists like Johann Michael Rottmayr, Paul Troger, Lorenzo Mattielli, Antonio Beduzzi and others worked with the finest materials here, according to Baroque imagination, showing us unmistakably, until today, the significance of the house of worship and the divine service.

Worship Services on Sundays and Holidays at 9.30 am in the abbey church

“In the Middle of the Day”daily midday prayers at 12.00 noonin the abbey church (April to October)
