Although not seeded for a top-8 finish in either of her races, Dania Holmberg is well positioned to grab one of those coveted first-team All-American places. In the 5000 meters, her 16:49.07 is three seconds behind eighth-seeded Nicole McMillen of Tusculum. However, at nationals,it sometimes comes down more to pure racing than paying attention to the stopwatch – and if that happens, Holmberg has proven herself up to the task time and time again. She puts herself in posi-tion to move up as the race goes along – and then goes and does exactly that. The top two spots in the 5K field are almost a dead heat. Lauren Bailey of Indianapolis is No. 1 at 16:14.16, and Ida Narbuvoll from the University of Mary is No. 2 at 16:14.33. From there, it’s seven seconds back to the rest.In the 3000, Holmberg has taken a huge time drop. She started the season with a 10:00.46 – and that came just a few hours after breaking five minutes In the mile. At the GNAC Championships, she was down to 9:47.95, and then went 9:38.98 just one week later. The eighth-place time coming into NCAAs is 9:36.92 by Hanna Groeber of Grand Valley State. The long jump is loaded. Anything less than 19 feet no longer gets in, and this year, the last of the 16 accepted entries was 19-1½.

Peace Igbonagwam is a few places above that at 19-5½. That’s already farther than the 19-2¾ she went last year in Pittsburg, Kansas.Coming into the meet, the last of the top-8 spots belongs to Cheyenne Williamson of Saginaw Valley at 19-7½ – which happens to be Igbonagwam’s PR,

that from the 2019 GNAC indoor meet. The top seed is West Texas A&M senior Fatim Afessi, with her mark of 20-10¾Igbonagwam will be well-rested for this one. Unlike the GNAC meet, when the long jump was one of three events on her docket for the first day, her sole focus will be on the long.

SCOUTING REPORT: FALCON FODDER

-- Peace Igbonagwam’s sixth-place finish in the long jump last year was worth three team points. Those were SPU’s only points of the meet and tied for 44th place.-- This is the 36th year of the NCAA indoor nationals. In the first 35 meets, SPU has scored points in 17 of them.-- The CrossPlex is hosting the nationals for the fourth time. The previous three were in 2013, 2015, and 2017.-- Seattle Pacific athletes have had some success here. In 2013, McKayla Fricker was fourth in the 800; the 4-by-400 relay was sixth, and Katy Gross was 11th in the pentathlon. The 2015 meet saw the distance medley relay place ninth and Lynelle Decker finish 14th in the 800. In 2017, the DMR was an All-American eighth, and Mary Charleson ran 13th in the mile.-- The highest SPU finishes at nationals were a tie for sixth in 1993 and sole possession of sixth in 2009.

Even before she arrives in Alabama, it’s already going to be quite a week for Dania Holmberg. When she steps onto the track for the 5000 meters on Friday, it will be Holmberg’s first appearance at the NCAA indoor nationals. There’s Milestone No. 1.That race means Holmberg now will have competed at the NCAA level in all three running seasons: cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and outdoor track in the spring – and all within the past year. (She was on the 2018 national cross country team, as well.).That’s Milestone No. 2.When Holmberg runs the 3000 on Saturday, she will be the first Seattle Pacific athlete ever to race that distance at an indoor NCAA championship meet. And Milestone No. 3.Last spring, Holmberg ran in the 1500 and the 5000 at outdoor nationals in Kingsville, Texas. She ran to an All-American 21st-place finish at the cross country nationals last November. Not to be overlooked: Holmberg will be the first SPU runner in the 5000 at nationals since 2009. Jessica Pixler won the title that year in 16 minutes, 22.64 seconds, and Jane Larson was seventh in 17:04.01.

No one in the West Region long-jumped farther than Peace Igbonagwam. Her mark of 19-5½ was at the top of the list when the All-West Region awards were announced by the U.S. Track & Field and cross Country Coaches Association.Igbonagwam earned indoor All-West recognition for the second straight year, having also done so for the long jump in 2019. Along with those, her collection for the indoor season includes six All-GNAC awards and her All-American certificate from last year’s NCAA long jump performance,Dania Holmberg joined Igbonagwam on the All-Region list, as she was listed No. 2 in the 3000 and 5000.

THE COACHES Head coach / Program director KARL LERUM

Having successfully continued a long-standing tradition of success with Seattle Pacific’s track and field teams, Karl Lerum is now in his seventh year as director of the school’s entire running program, having taken on that role in the fall of 2013.

Lerum is heading into his 15th year in charge of the SPU track program. In 2019, for the eighth time in school history, and all under his leadership, the Falcon women pulled an indoor-outdoor GNAC team title sweep. Both of the ‘19 wins came by four-point mar-gins against Central Washington, 154-150 indoors and 166-162 outdoors.\A few weeks after the season ended, Lerum was named the 2019 GNAC women’s outdoor Coach of the Year. He also won the indoor coaching honor for 2019, the sixth time he has taken both in the same season. He now has 18 GNAC coaching awards altogether: nine for indoors and nine for outdoors. He also has six West Region women’s indoor Coach of the Year awards and four outdoor awards, thereby giving him 28 conference and region honorsaltogether between the winter and spring.

Of Seattle Pacific’s 13 conference indoor team championships, Lerum has been the man in charge for 11 of those.During the 2019 indoor season, the Falcon women posted 12 NCAA provisional qualifying marks, and sent three athletes (Scout Cai in the pentathlon and pole vault, Peace Igbonagwam in the long jump, and Kate Lilly in the mile) to the nationals, Outdoors, SPU racked up another dozen provisional marks, and four athletes (Cai in the heptathlon and pole vault, Lilly and Dania Holmberg in the 1500 and 5000, and Kaylee Mitchell in the steeplechase) were at nationals.Igbonagwam made first-team All-American in the indoor long, Lilly was first team in the outdoor 5000 and second team in the indoor mile, and Cai was first team outdoorsd in the hep and pole vault. Lerum stepped up to the Falcons’ coaching helm in October 2005, taking over from Jack Hoyt. He worked as an assistant to Hoyt in 2000, and again in 2003. In between, he spent two years as an assistant coach at Trinity College, an NCAA Division III school in Hartford, Conn. While Lerum has coached numerous athletes with impressive accomplishments at SPU, he has quite an impressive athletic background of his own.As an athlete at Pacific Lutheran University in nearby Tacoma, Lerum made his mark in two sports. On the football field, he set – and still owns – the school career records for receptions and receiving yards. On the track, Lerum has the Lutes record in the 400 meters and is among the school’s top 10 in the decathlon, 110 hurdles, long jump, 100 meters, and javelin. He was an All-American in the decathlon, finishing third at the NAIA nationals in 1996 and second in ‘97 and ‘98.He didn’t stop there. After college, Lerum was on the San Francisco 49ers’ roster for the 1998 and 1999 preseason, and played with the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL Europe. In 2003 and again in 2004, he served as the head coach of the Oslo Vikings football program in Norway.Lerum is a graduate of Franklin Pierce High School in Parkland, south of Tacoma. He has a bachelor’s degree in history from PLU and a master’s in history from Trinity.

He and son Lukas live in Seattle.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH CHRIS REEDChris Reed is beginning his ninth year as a collegiate coach and his seventh as an assistant at Seattle Pacific, joining the staff in December 2013.The native of Klamath Falls in southern Oregon is a 2011 graduate of Western Oregon University, majoring in economics. The 2018-19 year was a big one for Reed’s distance runners. During the fall, the women’s cross country team placed 15th among 32 teams at the NCAA nationals, after a 3rd-place finish at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference meet and 4th at the NCAA West Regionals..During the 2019 indoor season, Kate Lilly was a second-team All-American with a 12th-place finish in the mile at nationals. The distance runners accounted for 42 of SPU’s 154 points, beating Central Washington by four to help win the GNAC title for the 13th time in school history.Outdoors in the spring, Lilly was an All-American in the NCAA 5000 meters, placing 5th. She also ran in the 1500 and was joined by sophomore Dania Holmberg in both races. Seattle Pacific edged Central Washington by four points for the title, 166-162, and the distance crew contributed 51 of those points. On the men’s side, Jesse Phan capped his career with a stunning victory in the 800 meters, that coming on the heels of an All-GNAC 3rd-place finish in the indoor 800.In the fall of 2019, the Falcon women placed 12th at NCAAs, the team’s best finish in 10 years. Holmberg earned All-GNAC, All-Region and All-American; Lilly was All-GNAC and All-Region.Reed helped guide Lynelle Decker race to three individual All-American honors during the 2015-16 school year: theindoor and outdoor 800, and the outdoor 1,500. In addition, the SPU distance medley relay team has posted three straight All-American finishes at the NCAA indoor meet.In 2016, the foursome of Decker, Jahzelle Ambus, Chynna Phan, and Anna Patti ran to fifth place. The 2017 team of Sarah Macdonald, Lani Taylor, Phan, and Mary Charleson came from behind to take eighth. And in 2018, it was Lilly, Taylor, Phan, and Charleson crossing the line in fifth.

Reed became an assistant coach at Western Oregon in 2011 prior to joining the Falcons. He was named the West Region Women’s Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. In December 2019, he was elected vice president of the USTFCCCA Division II Cross Country Committee. On the cross country course, Reed was a two-time All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection, finishing seventh as a junior in 2009 and third as a senior in 2010. He also was a two-time NCAA qualifier, earning All-American recognition in 2009.Reed raced to a pair of All-GNAC track honors, taking third in the 5,000 meters as a freshman in 2008, then third in the 1,500 as a senior in 2011. He also was fourth in the 5K as a junior and senior. Indoors, he won the

2011 GNAC mile title and anchored the Wolves’ distance medley relay to All-American status later that season.Reed finished his career with five school records: the mile, 5000, and DMR indoors, along with the 5000 and 10,000 outdoors. He ran in five NCAA championship meets (twice in cross country and outdoor track, and once in indoor track). He and his wife, Annie, live in Seattle.

ASSISTANT COACH KATE CARLSONKate Carlson, who was an assistant coach in 2007 and 2008, has returned to head coach Karl Lerum’s staff and will focus on sprints and jumps. She also is a certified strength coach, so will lead workouts in the weight room. Most recently, she coached high school track at Seattle Academy.During her own competition days, Carlson was a multi-talented athlete. She swam in high school, rowed her first year in college, then learned to pole vault at Dartmouth. By

the time she graduated, she was No. 2 on that school’s all-time pole vault list.

Carlson has coached previously at Southern California and the University of Washington.

“I love training and lifting, and I love to run,” Carlson said. “I run moderately long distances with friends when they want to train. And as a family (with husband Jonathan and daughters Jordyn and Emma), we ski a lot.”
