CHRISTCHURCH HISTORY Maori oral history suggests that people first inhabited the Canterbury area about a thousand years ago. These first inhabitants were moa-hunting tribes and these were followed by the Waitaha, Ngati Mamoe and Ngai Tahu tribes, which contin-ued untill about 1830. The first European landed in Canterbury in 1815, 45 years after Captain James Cook sighted what he named “Banks Island”, later found to be a peninsula. Christchurch became a city by Royal Charter on July 31, 1856, making it officially the oldest established city in New Zealand.

National Diploma in Business Level 5COURSE DESCRIPTIONNational Diploma in Business (“NDIPBUSL5”) course is a nationally recognised qualification, developed by the institute and approved by New Zealand Qualifica-tions Authority (NZQA). The course has been carefully structured and designed to meet the needs of students wishing to study Business & Management.

The NDIPBUSL5 is a sub-degree course to be completed over one academic year of full-time study or equivalent part-time study. The course leads to a broad based Business and Management qualification that will qualify students for entry level careers within a range of industries that requires people with the knowledge and skills in business and management areas. It also prepares you for entry into further university and other tertiary level studies.

STUDENT ADVICE AND SUPPORTThere are many reasons to choose Abacus Institute of Studies and one of them is our guidance and support, which is provided to the students to achieve their academic as well as personal goals. Our support system gets activated from the moment students board flight from their home country and action starts when they reach New Zealand.

ORIENTATION PROGRAMMEThe orientation shall cover the following areas:• Guidance and support available internally and externally• Institute’s rules and regulations• Disciplinary procedures and refund policy• Student Fee Protection• Procedure for complaints, grievances• Living in New Zealand, including driving and road safety• Emergency phone numbers and emergency handling procedures• A copy of Code of Practice Summary (for International Students)

ACCOMODATIONAbacus Institute of Studies uses an accomodation agent to provide the necessary accomodation services for students requiring them. Students will have a choice of staying in a homestay accomodation or renting an apartment unit or sharing a flat with other students.

COUNSELLINGInternal counselling will include the following:1. Accomodation assistance and welfare matters2. Course Planning and Academic Advice3. Further studies and career pathways4. Day-to-day mattersIf the students need external support, the matter will be referred to appropriate counselling service for further help. The details of these agencies can be found in Student Handbook and also displayed on the Institute’s Notice Board.

AIRPORT PICKUPAirport pickup is a free service, which is available to all our students on advance notice. If we are advised of any special requirements like, moving large luggage or transporting accompanying family members etc., it will help us in arranging the right vehicles.

N Abacus Institute of Studies has an agreement with Public Trust, which acts as a trustee to protect students’ fees by holding the fee amount in a trust account, transferring a pro-rated monthly amount over to the institute. This pro-tects all students’ fees against the unlikely event of insol-vency, regulatory closure or withdrawal of accreditation of the college. This is an NZQA approved method of fee protection. ADDITIONAL SERVICES Students will be offered the following free services to support them in settling down both within and outside the institute:

FEE REFUND POLICY The amount of refund depends on the course length (period of enrolment) and on the period between the start of the course

and the application for withdrawal.

//Withdrawal on or before eighth day from commencement of the course: Students are entitled to full fee refund, less admin-istration charge of 10% of the payment to a maximum of $500.

//Withdrawal after the eighth day from commencement of the course: No fee refund is available.

ELIGIBILITY FOR HEALTH SERVICESMost international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand unless they are:1. A resident or citizen of Australia; or2. A national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand; or3. The holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.

If you do not belong to one of these special categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you will be liable for the full costs of that treatment. The students need to have insurance that will cover the cost of medical treatment in New Zealand for the duration of their stay. They must also obtain insurance to cover their travel to and from New Zealand. Students can choose their own insur-ance provider but in that case they must submit the policy for Institute’s approval.

ACCIDENT INSURANCEThe Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, however one may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. IMMIGRATION AND VISADetails of Visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service and can be viewed on their website at http://www.immigration.govt.nz
