BALUT is an exotic Fili-pino street food. It is a boiled fertilized duck embryo. It is considered a high-pro-tein, hearty snack and are mostly sold by street vendors in the regions they are avail-able. For the couples out there, especially the guys, did you know that Balut is known to be an aphrodisiac? It can actually increase sexual desires, which is believed to be as effective as those natural male enhancement pills you can buy. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Year: 4th year transfer student (1st year at CPP)

Major: Music Industry Studies (Productions)

Hobbies: making music, piano, dancing, cooking, messing with people, and going beast mode

My favorite thing about Barkada is both the diversity and friendliness of the mem-bers. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming, which defi-nitely made transferring from San Diego much easier.

If I had never joined Barkada, I would probably be kicking it back at the village being boring. But really, I definitely am glad to be a part of this club and to have met all these amazing people. Shout outs to the “Serbian Centipede etc. Fam” and BMOD!

My favorite thing about Barkada is the people; they're all so fun to hang out with, although I know I should be doing homework instead of staying at the API, but then again it's ok because inthe end I manage to get it done. Well, most of it.

If I had never joined Barkada I honestly don't know where I would be. But if I were to take a guess, I would have to say the arcade because that's where I use to meet up with my orientation friends.

Barkada had a Kuya/Ate/Ading social at the Ontario Ice Skating Center. The night began with a majority of the members anx-ious to get on the ice. Although some were scared, especially me, overall I think every-one had a great time. There were a few falls and slips on the ice, but we had a good laugh throughout the night. I would like to mention specific names, but it’s better that I keep it to my-self. A few people that have never been ice skating before were frightened at first, but they were eventually able to skate around the rink like it was nothing. A few members started a Conga Line while the disco lights were flashing and the radio music was play-ing, but then the owners of the rink told us to break the line. As the night came to a close, Barkada took one last lap around the rink and ended up taking a few pictures on the ice and outside for another fun social. I am just glad to say that those who were scared to skate were able to face their fears and end their day on a high note.

Hello Barkada!

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying your winter quarter be it your first, last, or somewhere in the middle! Big things are coming for Barkada, and one event I had in mind is Sportsfest! Yes, that is right Sportsfest is just around the corner and we have been busy preparing for it.

What is Sportsfest? For those who do not know what Sportsfest is, it is Filipino sports tournament held right here at Cal Poly Pomona that features Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Softball, Tennis, and Bowling.

Sportsfest History: It was created in 1989 and it is what is today thanks to the thou-sands of volunteers, coordinators, and par-ticipants. With the continued support from everyone Sportsfest continues to grow and become one of the largest sports tourna-ments in all of Southern California. What started out as a friendly rivalry between southern Califor-nia schools, Sportsfest is now a highly competitive tournament which draws participating schools and communities spanning from San Diego, Northern California, and Nevada. This year...With every Sportsfest comes a title or motto, this year’s Sportsfest will be called “Rise”. With it being the 23rd year of Sportsfest, the number 23 instantly made me think of one of the basketball greats if not the greatest player to play

the game of basketball, and that is Michael Jordan. I chose “Rise” because even against all odds, with all the challenges Jordan faced, no matter how daunting the situation was, he manged to “Rise” to the occasion. There have been many times where he has failed, but that did not stop him from reach-ing his goals, because what defines us is how well we rise after falling. I have kept that in mind while organizing this event, and so I want to make sure that it will not disappoint. So get ready for Sports-fest, because it will be an experience to remember.

Thoughts BMod felt amazing through-out the entire competiton. We truly felt honored to be placed on the line-up and given the opportunity to compete at these amazing events. Their performance at Vibe ended, and they felt they received encouragement and respect as they walked off the stage. That was a special moment in Barkada Modern’s history, where the community was able to see what we can really offer.

What’s Next For BMod?Next on the agenda for BMod are private auditions and preparation for two impor-tant events that we host every year. Urban Street Jam, which is a hip-hop dance competi-tion produced by Stylz Dance Studio, will happen on March 3rd at the Anaheim Conven-tion Center. Two weeks later, they will be hosting Barkada’s Sportsfest Halftime Show. Competitions like World of Dance and Fusion (San Diego) are next on the list, as well as making a brand new set for these respective competitions.

What Would You Like To Say To Barkada?I would like to tell Barkada thanks for all of the uncondi-tional support thus far in the season. Although we are both still waiting for a social, I re-ally feel that we support each other in everything we do. See-ing Barkada members attend-ing our club events, Family & Friend nights, and even prac-tices demonstrates the bond we have with Barkada. We are eager and excited to return the favor during Sportsfest and PACN. We love you guys & thanks for your unconditional love Barkada.

Cassy Yang Before Vibe, I felt every single emotion possible! I felt nervous, excited, scared, and happy all at once. During the competition, I just thought about all the hard work my team had put into this set and how much we’ve grown together during our struggles. During our closer, I remember thinking “Wow, it’s already almost over” and wishing that the performance and feeling would last at least a little longer. When Vibe ended, I felt very proud of my team and elat-ed because I knew all of our hard work had paid off. Plac-ing was never even a factor in my mind because just being on stage, doing what I’m pas-sionate about with the people I love was rewarding enough.

What a great way to start off this year's dance competition season with Vibe! Held in Irvine, CA, Vibe has been around for 17 years. Since then, it has grown into one of the biggest dance competitions in this community. I just want to say congratulations to Barkada Modern on their great performance at Vibe XVII by bringing it to the stage with their passion and energy. One of our fellow members, Aaron Gallardo, says, "Performing at Vibe was amazing. The blinding lights, the music blasting and the roar of the crowd... there's not too many things like it." If you weren't at Vibe, you can catch their performance along with the other great performances at Pacific Rim Video/Photo Press Youtube account. I can't wait to see what Barkada Modern has in store for us at the competition. Before I conclude, I just want to say one thing to the lovely ladies of Barkada Modern... WEEEEERK in those heels girls!!!

On February 9, Culture Chair Luigi Cava and BEC Coordinator NJ Calinawan held PACN Orientation at the CLA Paseo. Along with revealing the dances that will be performed this year, they announced the cast roles. When asked why there were major roles but no ‘lead’ roles, Cava responded with, “Because all of my cast is special to me.”With that in mind, all of the participants responded with great enthusiasm and joy when each actor and actress slotted for a Major role was pictured on the projector with a flick of a wrist.

We are pleased to announce the eight faces that

will capture your hearts this season!

After weeks of auditioning, hustling people from the API into the conference room, putting friends into awkward situations and seeing them succeed with comedic prowess and dramatic flair, the panel finalized the Hawak Kamay cast.
