RE: Tabassum Kennedy, AAWR-Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award
It is my pleasure to provide you with this letter of recommendation in support of Dr. Tabassum
Kennedy and her nomination to the AAWR-Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award. I am
providing you with this recommendation based upon Dr. Kennedy’s leadership and interpersonal
skills, scholarly approach to teaching and demonstrated commitment to exceptional patient care
in her field of Neuroradiology. I have known Dr. Kennedy for seven years and seen her grow
into an extraordinary faculty member in our department. I am the Chair of the Department of
Radiology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison where I have served as a faculty member
for over 20 years. My recommendation of Dr. Kennedy is based upon my personal experience
with her leadership capacities as the Neuroradiology Fellowship Director, as the Practice Quality
Improvement Team Leader for Neuroradiology as well as the Neuroradiology clerkship director
for medical students.
Dr. Kennedy is determined to pursue academic medicine and has worked tirelessly to restructure
the Neuroradiology fellowship, implement novel approaches to teaching medical students and
taken the lead in the division of Neuroradiology to spearhead practice quality improvement
initiatives. She has transformed the Neuroradiology fellowship into a truly outstanding training
experience with significant advancements in curriculum development.
I am very supportive of all of Dr. Kennedy’s endeavors with our medical school, including her
initiative to restructure the Neuroradiology curriculum within the Neurology medical student
core rotation. She has a gift for distilling complex topics into easily understood concepts. Dr.
Kennedy’s innovative approach in transforming a lecture-based curriculum into an integrated
web-based curriculum with weekly case discussions will undoubtedly serve as a model for other
clerkship directors at the University of Wisconsin. She possesses the necessary fundamental
attributes that make a strong leader: she is determined, organized and reliable.
I believe that the combination of Dr. Kennedy’s personal strengths and the environment created
by the UW Department of Radiology makes her highly likely to be successful as an academic
physician and leader in Neuroradiology. Dr. Kennedy is an exceptional candidate for the
AAWR-Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award. The opportunity to learn from and
interact with prominent women in Radiology would benefit her immensely and help her acquire
necessary leadership skills to be a prominent leader in our department and at the university. I
believe she will fundamentally contribute to the field of academic medicine and lead future
Neuroradiologists to fulfilling and successful careers. I strongly support her application for the
AAWR-Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award, and I believe a positive outcome of her

Meltzer and Sanelli: It is a genuine pleasure to write this letter of nomination for Dr. Tabassum Kennedy to be considered for the 2015 Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award. It is an easy letter to write, as Dr. Kennedy possesses truly outstanding leadership ability and has seemingly unlimited drive and energy to go with it; from her very first day as a trainee in our neuroradiology fellowship program (which Dr. Kennedy herself has directed since 2012), she has set the standard for excellence in everything she does. While she already holds leadership positions in our department and is becoming more nationally recognized, I see absolutely no limit to her potential for continued achievement on the rapidly rising trajectory she has established. Dr. Kennedy has had such a huge impact on our service and on the training of our fellows, residents and students that I hardly know where to begin. Even before joining our faculty, Dr. Kennedy excelled among her peers as a fellow, showing truly exceptional ability and commitment in teaching neuroradiology to residents and students. In particular, she exceeded all expectations in her sustained dedication to the education of students rotating through Neuroradiology in our Clinical Neurosciences Clerkship. Before Dr. Kennedy arrived, the rotation received rather mixed reviews from students; this trend was completely reversed by Dr. Kennedy soon after she took over as Clerkship Director. She tirelessly strived to make the rotation better. She redesigned the student lectures to make them more interactive and engaging. She overhauled the core curriculum and established more complete and specific goals and objectives for the rotation. She developed a novel series of web-based modules for self-directed learning, reducing the time students previously spent merely observing. She began meeting with students individually and in small groups for case discussions and student presentations. She even set up weekly office hours for students who wanted additional one-on-one time to ask questions or review cases. (How many clinical faculty maintain weekly office-hours for students??) The impact of Dr. Kennedy’s effort to improve the students’ experience in neuroradiology was nothing short of dramatic. She brought the creativity and initiative needed to transform the rotation into a valuable experience and the rotation now receives overwhelmingly high ratings from students. Her ability to engage and connect with students is unique in our section and even in our entire department. Dr. Kennedy is continually finding more and better ways to teach neuroradiology. She co-founded a Medical Student Education Committee in our Department, charged with developing and optimizing student educational programs in all areas of radiology. She has been an exceptional mentor to students considering careers in Radiology. Our residents selected her for the highly prestigious Teacher of the Year award a few years ago. As Director of our ACGME-accredited Neuroradiology Fellowship, she

brought fresh ideas to our core curriculum, built up our didactic lecture series, reorganized our monthly journal clubs and “recommended reading” lists, and became a tireless champion of optimized yet continually evolving fellowship education and training. The enthusiasm and resolve that she has shown in this critical leadership position have been astounding; Dr. Kennedy is that rare individual who is not only exceptionally competent in her field but also completely committed to sharing her knowledge and devoting her best work to the education of others. “What would we do without Tabby?” is now a familiar refrain heard from our very grateful fellows, seemingly on a daily basis. Beyond her many contributions to neuroradiology education, I want to emphasize the tremendous impact Dr. Kennedy has had on our clinical service mission. She is tenacious in seeking ways to improve our service. She comes to me with ideas almost daily. Not only does she find areas for improvement, she sets the highest standards for herself and then leads the way for the rest of us. There have been many examples. A couple of years ago we received a report from the hospital on our communication of critical imaging results for acute stroke patients. Our turnaround times were disappointing. I made Dr. Kennedy our practice quality improvement (PQI) team leader and she initiated a detailed analysis of the problem and successfully lobbied for changes in both workflow and auditing procedures which, when implemented, raised our stroke code communications to near-perfect. This PQI project earned her the “Improving the Patient Experience of Care” award during our hospital’s Quality and Safety Week. Another recent example was her development of clinical practice guidelines and appropriateness criteria for performing image-guided spine procedures. We previously had what Dr. Kennedy recognized to be an uncertain and inefficient workflow for these procedures that frequently led to unnecessary delays and uneven patient experiences. Dr. Kennedy consulted the literature, polled other practices at several high-ranking institutions, identified sources of inefficiency and potentially unsafe conditions, and ultimately drafted a set of best practices now available on our Department web site, featuring key information for both referring clinicians and radiologists. Dr. Kennedy has been making a name for herself on the national stage, having received more than 10 awards in the last 5 years for her educational exhibits at national society meetings. Her neuroradiology educational website was showcased at last year’s annual meeting of the Association of University Radiologists. I have absolutely no doubt that we will continue to see great things from her wherever the development of novel and more effective approaches to radiology education is needed. I cannot imagine the Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award going to a more deserving candidate. I should also emphasize that Dr. Kennedy is one of the finest people I have ever had the privilege to work with. Everything she does, she does with poise and graciousness. She sets the proverbial bar very high for herself and for others; as her Section Chief I am incredibly fortunate to have her on my team. I only hope, when the time comes for me to step down, that she will take over leadership of our section – she is a rising star in every way and truly meritorious of this award.
