Set your sights on Savannah for NAAA’s 2010 convention Dec. 6–9

From the NAAABrian Rau, NAAA President Andrew Moore, NAAA Executive Director

501

On behalf of the National Agricultural Aviation Association, we would like to invite every reader of AgAir Update to NAAA’s 44th Annual Convention & Exposition Dec. 6−9. This year, NAAA is leaving the slot machines of Nevada behind for sweet tea and the Southern comforts of Savannah, Georgia, a first for us.

Whether you are a newcomer to the industry or have been attending for years, you’ll find much to savor about NAAA’s Savannah Convention experience. The educational sessions, networking opportunities and exposure to the latest products, research and technological advancements in aerial application represent the perfect mix of business and pleasure.

The pre-convention buzz has been palpable. NAAA’s original convention hotels, the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa and Hyatt Regency Savannah, quickly sold out, so we have established room blocks at two more hotels to accommodate attendees—the Savannah Marriott Riverfront ($110/night) and the Holiday Inn Express ($109/night), which is across the street from the Hyatt. Please call 912-233-7722 for the Marriott and 912-231-9000 for the Holiday Inn Express (use group code NAAA for both hotels).

One of the unique aspects of Savannah is the Savannah River. The Savannah International Trade & Convention Center and the Westin Savannah are on one side. The Hyatt Regency, Marriott and Holiday Inn Express are on the other in the heart of Savannah’s main shopping, tourist and entertainment areas. A free ferry service will shuttle convention attendees across the river throughout the day and evening. Free shuttle bus service is also available.

NAAA chose “Stewards of the Sky” as

this year’s theme because agricultural aviation and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Who better to open the convention then than a true steward of the sky, albeit a steward of a different sort? Howie Franklin will be the keynote speaker for NAAA’s Kickoff Breakfast. He served an unprecedented five presidents as the head flight attendant on Air Force One. Howie has hundreds of fascinating and funny stories and will entertain attendees with tales about the powerful and famous passengers he had the privilege of serving over the course of five administrations.

We will examine the health of the industry and its pilots during our General Session on Dec. 7. Several specialists will help diagnose some of the challenges facing the industry. First, a panel of experts will provide an illuminating look at major environmental regulatory obstacles affecting agriculture and the aerial application industry, including the new NPDES Clean Water Act permitting system slated to go into effect in April 2011. All aerial applicators need to learn as much as possible about the EPA’s new permitting system before it goes into effect to avoid regulator enforcement and possible citizen suits later. Endangered Species Act and spray drift issues will also be covered.

Dr. Warren Silberman, the FAA’s lead expert on airmen’s medical certification, will lead the final segment of the General Session. He has agreed to address the problem of a workforce in which the average age is increasing as are the aviation-related medical problems that come along with aging. Don’t miss Dr. Silberman’s prescription for how to maintain certification and what steps to take to regain a medical certificate lost because of one of these ailments.

There’s more, including the ASABE/

NAAA Technical Sessions and several concurrent sessions that will cover topics such as application technology, chemical, aircraft airframe and engine manufacturing. If you are new to the industry, you won’t want to miss the Compaass Rose presentations.

The demand for exhibit space has been outstanding. As of this writing, 130 exhibitors have signed on to display the latest and greatest products, services and aircraft available to help your aerial application business. NAAA’s trade show takes place Dec. 7−8.

Selecting Savannah is just one of several firsts at our 2010 Convention & Exposition. In addition, the first recipient of the NAAA/BASF Agricultural Aviation Scholarship will be announced and NAAA will auction off a brand new turbine engine for the first time in our history, courtesy of Pratt & Whitney Canada! Pratt & Whitney Canada is contributing a new PT6A-34AG engine (0 TTSN)—an extraordinary opportunity for anyone in need of a new turbine engine. NAAA’s Live Auction is always one of the highlights of the convention, but Pratt

& Whitney Canada has raised the bar considerably.

Finally, NAAA is holding a golf tournament for its AgAv PAC Dec. 4–5 prior to the official start of the convention. The AgAv PAC is used to strengthen NAAA’s presence in Washington, D.C., by supporting congressional candidates friendly to the aerial application industry. Held at the luxurious Club at Savannah Harbor, the tournament will be a four-member team Best Ball starting Sunday morning, Dec. 5. A pre-tournament reception and Calcutta takes place on Dec. 4.

That’s just a taste of what you’ll find at NAAA’s 44th Annual Convention & Exhibition. You’ll find much more information within these pages and on NAAA’s Web site at www.agaviation.org. Please join us for what promises to be an unforgettable week!

Register for NAAA’s 2010 Convention by returning the pre-registration form found in this section or online at www.agaviation.org. You will save $50 if you register by Dec. 1.

from the Cockpit

Welcome to AgAir Update’s 18th consecutive show guide, designed exclusively to promote NAAA’s 44th annual convention and trade show exhibition. This year’s convention will be hosted in wonderful Savannah, Georgia, my home state. If you have not already made your arrangements to attend, it is not too late. The official dates are December 6 - 9, 2010. However, I am proclaiming an early start date of December 3!

AgAir Update will host an open house and hangar party, Friday afternoon

See ya in Savannah! and evening, December 3. NAAA’s first activity starts Saturday afternoon, December 4 with the Calcutta for the golf tournament Sunday morning. AgAir Update’s Open House and Hangar Party is only a short three-hour drive from Savannah, kinda on the way to Savannah from the Atlanta airport. When I say, “kinda”, it means you will drive 100 miles south on I-75 (1:20), then the following day with less than three hours driving, mostly on I-16 to Savannah. This compares to the almost four-hour drive from Atlanta to Savannah. I realize some

will book airline tickets directly to KSAV. However, they will miss all the splendid views of Georgia by not driving.

The ideal way to attend the NAAA convention would be to fly into KATL on Friday, December 3. Rent a car with a drop off at KJAX. Drive to AgAir Update’s Open House Hangar Party and overnight in one of Perry, Georgia’s 2,200 hotel/motel rooms (AAU has a room block at the Holiday Inn with a special rate). On Saturday, drive to Savannah to participate in the NAAA golf tournament, or take your time and spend a day and night on the road through South Georgia touring your way to Savannah for the convention.

After the convention is over on Thursday night, Friday morning head south along the Golden Isles of Georgia that include St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island. Besides islands, you don’t want to miss visiting St. Mary’s, the second oldest city in the U.S.. Drive across the Georgia-Florida State line and visit Amelia Island before turning in your rental car in Jacksonville and catching a flight home. All of these quaint stops are must-see places.

I look forward to each of you attending AgAir Update’s Open House and Hangar Party on December 3. You can come anytime, but the official start time is 5pm and the festivities continue until the last person leaves. I already know there is a contingent of motor home ag-pilots from Arkansas, as well as cars and aircraft that will be there for the live music, Southern barbeque and drink. Be sure to RSVP online at agairupdate.com so I’ll be sure to have enough of everything!

As you can tell by reading the pages of AgAir Update’s NAAA Show Guide, 2010 promises to be an exceptional year for NAAA’s annual convention and trade show exhibition. The first two host

hotels have sold out with two more host hotels being added to accommodate the record breaking registration numbers. Don’t worry too much if you can’t be in the original host hotel, as there will be a ongoing line of river boat ferries crossing the Savannah River from the River Walk and Historic area to the Savannah Convention Center. The convention center is extremely large and can easily accommodate the exhibitors. The ag-aircraft are scheduled to be parked between the convention center and the Westin Hotel, about 100 yards apart. All the playing cards are in place for a great convention.

Be sure you stop by AgAir Update’s booth #617. Graham has plans that even I am not aware of yet. I’m sure he’ll be taking video to email each night to our eEdition subscribers and post on agairupdate.com. You’ll want to wave at your unfortunate friends that didn’t make it to the convention! For our dear and wonderful wives, those of certain age, AgAir Update will be handing out traditional Southern hand fans, “For a HOT News FLASH!”. Of course, I look forward to talking with each of you.

There is one last thought that I’d like to leave with you and have done so every year in this editorial. If you attend the NAAA Convention and Trade Show with an open mind, you can easily offset the cost of attending by learning new and better ways to operate a flying service or fly a field.

See ya in Savannah in December!

110Ag-Nav Inc.

The AG-NAV INC. team invites you to visit us at Booth # 110 during the 44th NAAA convention in Savannah, Georgia. FREE navigation demo software and GIS post-processing software will be available to all visitors. Visitors to our booth will also have the opportunity to see our new products and will be able to speak with our staff.

September 30th marks our 25th year of manufacturing and service to the airborne industry. This milestone marks a great professional achievement and solidifies the commitment to our customers to offer high quality products and even higher quality customer support. Our customer loyalty speaks volumes for the quality of products we have delivered in the past and the experience obtained during these years will guarantee that every product manufactured by AG-NAV INC. will have 100% satisfaction. When you purchase from AG-NAV, we offer you reliable factory service and support as well as FREE software updates for the life of your product.

This year, AG-NAV INC. is pleased to introduce the new and improved TRACKERNAV system. This system is designed like no other tracking system without operational costs. TRACKERNAV is an advanced Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) system designed with fleet management in mind. GPS technology and airwave communication technology provide for a robust, scalable system with no upfront telemetry costs. TRACKERNAV consists of an in-vehicle GPS receiver coupled with a modem. Combined with TRACKERNAV software on your PC, TRACKERNAV puts you in control of your data from anywhere in the world and when you want to see it. Other AVL systems store data off site which can lead to costly monthly data hosting fees. When deployed as part of a fleet management system, TRACKERNAV

delivers accurate real-time information enabling route planners to compare where the vehicle should be and where the vehicle actually is.

Our SPRAYVIEWW software

has been very successful

with helping our clients

interface applied data to

Google Earth.

During the 2010 season many customers used this software to get accurate maps and geo-referenced data for their applications by interfacing with Google Maps. With SPRAYVIEWW, data analysis is easy and reporting is better than with other more costly agriculture GIS software on the market.

Many of our clients have asked for the automatic booms on/off technology to be able to use geo-referenced maps with exclusion zones and such. This year we delivered a fully automatic on/off valve that reacts in a fraction of a second to the maps information during the application. This allows for the pilot to just fly the lines and maintain the guidance line accuracy. This makes the system fully automatic along with our automatic AG-FLOW control and our navigation system.

The SMART BAR hardware suits the requirements for fixed wing aircrafts and helicopters. We have produced a small, medium and large size NAV-BAR. They are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and are able to give you four alphanumeric messages with four digits for each selection; thus, displaying more accurate information in real time. This

new design is brighter than any other intelligent light bar on the market. It is lightweight and aerodynamically designed to fit any type of aerial application aircraft. All models will be on display at Booth # 110.

When you visit us at our booth, we will have several systems on display for you to interact with, such as the popular AG-NAV GUIA “GOLD” model for aerial application. The AG-NAV GUIA is a DGPS navigation system designed to meet and exceed specific requirements for guidance in aerial applications. Features such as the USB port allows for fast uploading and downloading of files, saving you time and money. One USB stick can store data for a whole season, making the AG-NAV GUIA very safe and reliable. No data cards, no PCMCIA, no memory cards to carry or lose, just a plain USB key will do the trick. With the AG-NAV GUIA, your data stays in the hard drive until you decide otherwise.

Unlike other heavy and bulky systems on the market, the AG-NAV GUIA is packaged in a compact single unit to save space and reduce weight. The user-friendly software makes it easy to navigate through menus for set-up and real-time application and its built-in light bar is useful, convenient and sufficient for some operations. Installation and removal are done in a snap!

The operating system for the AG-NAV GUIA allows pilots to navigate through menus with relative ease. It runs on LINUX platform; thus, there are no attacks from viruses most common in Windows operating systems. The AG-NAV GUIA uses features with full data logging that has proven user-friendly and successful in agricultural, forestry, geophysics, mosquito control and many other airborne applications.

The FLIGHTMASTER navigation system has been designed to meet Mosquito

Control Aerial Application specific requirements in the battle against field infestation. This system carries an on-board weather station (AIMMS20) and provides real-time information on wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, temperature and barometric pressure. Data is updated on every pass and displayed on a Moving Map during navigation. FLIGHTMASTER provides the pilot with swath, directional guidance and other navigational information required to carry out precise aerial applications. The FORESTMASTER works in similar fashion, but with features geared for forestry application.

The AG-FLOW automatic flow control system has been designed to ensure a steady distribution of application rates by automatically adjusting its flow. This system consists of a flow meter or sensor, a valve and DC motor to adjust the valve position, and a controller box. The flow rate is adjusted automatically by the valve position; thus, controlling the required flow to the spray booms. The controller box is a state-of-the-art computer which has serial ports and CAN bus technology used for communications with other systems. The simple and easy installation process guarantees that the AG-FLOW is ready to use right after installation as calibration is very fast and effective. The AG-FLOW is also capable of variable rate application.

Looking into the future, we wonder if there is a need for a full autopilot AG-NAV system.

For more information on the above systems and other AG-NAV products such as FIRE-NAV, TRAX-NAV, GROUND-NAV, LI-NAV and PHOTO-NAV, please visit us at NAAA BOOTH # 110 or contact us today at 800-99 AGNAV (24628). You can also visit our website at www.agnav.com.

Electronics International

Electronics International manufactures the most advanced glass panel engine monitoring system available for turboprop aircraft. The MVP-50T system monitors every engine parameter, plus a ton of extras. In addition to the MVP-50T’s seemingly endless ability to monitor and analyze every critical parameter, it also has an onboard annunciator panel. If any parameter climbs (or drops) out of normal operating ranges, the MVP-50T will alert the pilot visually and audibly.

Systems screenThe System Screen offers pilots up-to-the-minute

information for auxiliary functions. If one of the functions being monitored on the System Screen exceeds a redline limit or enters a cautionary zone, the MVP-50T will visually and audibly alert the pilot.

ChecklistsCustom, interactive checklists enhance cockpit

safety and help create a paperless cockpit environment. The MVP-50T places a checkmark next to each checklist entry as you step through each

checklist. Checklists can be easily created on a computer and uploaded through the MVP-50T’s USB interface.

Weight and balance calculationsWeight and Balance calculations are such a

hassle that many pilots frankly don’t perform them as the law requires. The MVP-50T takes the hassle out of the equation by allowing the pilot to input weights into pre-mapped aircraft locations. The result is a page of Weight and Balance information, as well as the associated W&B envelope.

Total fuel managementThe MVP-50T offers pilots up-to-date fuel

management information, including: Fuel Flow, Fuel Used During Flight, Fuel Used Since Last Fill Up, Gallons Per Mile, Fuel to Next Waypoint, Time, Distance and Fuel to Empty and Fuel Remaining.

516by Dennis [email protected]’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but every once in a while I come upon something that is worth repeating. I’m sure many of you have heard the 80-10-10 story that I tell when it comes to drift reduction products: 80% of the time nothing happens, 10% of the time the result is worse, and 10% of the time there is a definite improvement. Laboratory results may be better, but actual field experience has been pretty close to this.

Arkansas S.A.F.E. clinics have included one day of field evaluations of drift potential for years. These evaluations have included a variety of different equipment setups and operating variables and typically include the favored drift reduction additives for the area. The data has been quite sporadic and probably a reflection of the variety of setups, weather conditions, mixing

Arkansas operators take Control™procedures, and operating variables. With all that said, there have been a few products that consistently show a positive response. Control™ from Garrco Products, Inc. has been one of the products that has consistently shown a reduction in drift potential.

A replicated field study was initiated last year to look at nineteen different drift control additives and water with two aircraft. The aircraft were selected to give two separate speed scenarios, 115 and 150 mph. A preliminary report of this study was presented at a NAAA/ASAE joint technical meeting. I encourage everyone to obtain a copy of that report, available through links on the NAAA web page, and see how their favorite product performed. Control™ was one of the top performing products in this study.

The key to consistency can also hinge back to how well products perform under real field situations. Arkansas had

many operators utilizing Control™ as a drift control additive last year. Some of the comments I hear are: “Best material I’ve ever used, Very easy to mix and load, The material that I used to get on the windshield is gone, and Where can I get some Control™?” When one starts hearing these types of comments, there may be more to the performance than just good lab results. I was visiting a couple of different operators during the season and overheard conversations where they were either going to borrow some Control™ from someone else’s pallet until their shipment came in or another operator was coming to borrow some from them. This alone may tell the true story on performance.

Mixing and compatibility are one of the major issues with any drift reduction additive. John Garr, Jeff Tidwell, and I met at Tidwell Flying Service in Lonoke, Arkansas on a very cold morning just prior to the AAAA annual convention

to try several different tank mixes. John has some new products under development and the mix results on those are another story, but we tried every way we could think of to cause mix problems with Control™without success. Control™ mixed very easily under all scenarios even with almost ice-cold water!

I have had any number of operators ask me which drift control products are best. I’m not so sure there is a best product. Remember there are many application variables. I would recommend that operators try to select a product that consistently shows positive results. Also, additives alone are not the complete answer. Properly utilized, they may provide an extra margin of safety. Operators should use every tool possible to avoid drift. Proper equipment setup and operation will always play a dominant role.

ApplicationMGMT

Application Management is a stand alone work order management system that was developed by the Sharp family of Agri-Tech Aviation, Inc. in Iowa. Their original intent was to design a system strictly for their use to manage their incoming work during their busy season. However, after using the system during the 2009 season, the positive feedback from their customers was so overwhelming that they decided that it would be a beneficial system for other applicators as well

Application Management is a 100% online program with no software to download or update. The system allows you or your customer to input the needed information that you and/or your pilots need to complete a spray job. Each of

your customers has a secure login that gives them access to the easiest to use work order product on the market. There are many sorts, searches, and reports that can be preformed to find individual jobs, work outlook, or work history among other things. All the data in the system is backed up off site by a third party and the program is continually updated and improved.

Application Management was designed by aerial applicators for aerial applicators and is not a corporate project. The Sharp’s will continue using and selling Application Management as long as there is a need for this technology. Make Application Management a stop while at the convention in Savannah.

425Pratt & Whitney Canada

In the late 1950s, Pratt & Whitney Canada, then a manufacturer and repair shop of the famous Wasp radial piston aircraft engine, assembled a small team of young engineers and gave it a bold mission: to adapt turbine technology for smaller power plant applications. While there was no secure market for this type of new engine at the time, the company was convinced that, given the continuing growth of aircraft and the inherent weight advantages of turbine engines, the future lay in turbine-powered aircraft.

Adopting a low cost, low risk approach that emphasized engine reliability and maintainability, the team came up with the DS-10 gas turbine engine, an opposed shaft free-turbine design. This allowed the use of a simple propeller with low engine-out drag characteristics on fixed wing aircraft, and eliminated the need for a clutch in helicopters. The opposed shaft layout simplified the bearing and shaft arrangement and provided for easy maintenance access to the turbine in the hot section of the engine. The accessories were grouped together at the rear of the engine, providing easier access to components for maintenance, and the reduction gearbox was located up front. By placing the air intake at the back of the engine and the exhaust up front, the engine was quieter and less susceptible to ingesting foreign objects, and was also easily adapted for installation in both tractor and pusher turboprop aircraft.

Despite numerous technical challenges and rising development costs, a complete gas turbine engine with propeller was first tested on February 22 1960, just 14 months from full design launch. By mid-1961, the new engine, designated PT6 because it was the sixth propeller turbine design by Pratt & Whitney, took to the sky mounted in the nose of a Beech 18 borrowed from the Royal Canadian Air Force. Three years later, PT6A-6 engines began rolling off P&WC’s production lines to power the Beech King Air 90 twin-turboprop business aircraft.

Marking 50 years of innovation with the PT6A

The rest, as the saying goes, is history. Fifty years since the initial test run of the first PT6A turboprop engine, the engine series has emerged as the world’s most popular engine in its class, capturing more than 130 applications for business, commuter, helicopter, utility and trainer aircraft. P&WC has delivered more than 46,000 PT6 engines since 1964. Furthermore, with a whopping 89 models and more than 26,000 engines still in operation today, the PT6 family has accumulated more than 350 million flying hours. Experience gained from the PT6 program has helped spawn many of the engine families that have made P&WC a world leader in the gas turbine engine market. These include the PW100 regional airline turboprop and other engine families right up to the two latest additions – the small PW600 series turbofan for light business jets, and the PW800 designed for the large, high end business jet market.

Unique scalable designA lightweight free turbine engine, the PT6 incorporates a reverse flow combustion path utilizing counter-rotating turbine modules; one driving the compressor and one or two power turbines (depending on the model) driving the propeller through a reduction gearbox. The power turbines are “free”, or independent of the compressor turbine, an innovation that has allowed the PT6 engine to cover a diverse range of applications across all aircraft markets. The engines’ diameter remains constant although the PT6 has been scaled from the original 500shp to up to 2,000shp.

The “A” in PT6A represents the turboprop designation, powering commuter, corporate and utility aircraft, aerobatic trainers, agricultural aircraft, short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft and firefighting aircraft. Unmatched versatility, dependability and performance have made the PT6A the most thoroughly proven and popular turboprop engine family in the 500- to 2,000-shp class.

The PT6A turboprop comes in three fundamental sizes, all of which share the

same basic architecture. The ‘small’ family has three stages of axial compression and one centrifugal stage, driven by a single-stage axial compressor turbine, and has a single power turbine. P&WC created the ‘medium’ PT6A by adding a second power turbine, and the compressor was optimized for the increased power requirements. By adding a fourth axial compression stage to increase overall pressure ratio, P&WC created the ‘large’ PT6A. In addition to the changes in rotor count, several changes to materials and component aerodynamics have been implemented in various models to increase performance.

A constant evolutionSince the beginning, the PT6 has constantly evolved to satisfy customer needs through the application of innovative technology. The success of this approach is demonstrated by PT6’s popularity over the years. From the very start, for example, the PT6A and King Air proved to be a great marriage. The speed, quietness, low vibration and altitude capability compared with similarly sized piston aircraft made the turboprop twin a huge success, with approximately 5,000 sold. The King Air family has similarly evolved over the years and remains a strong seller in today’s market. Many other aircraft were later designed around the PT6, from the DeHavilland Twin Otter and Embraer Bandeirante commuter aircraft to utility aircraft including the Cessna Caravan, trainers including the Embraer Tucano, Beech T-34C and various Pilatus models, as well as agricultural aircraft such as the Air Tractor and Ayres Turbo Thrush products.

In the 1970s, P&WC secured major production commitments for its PT6T TwinPac®, a novel combination of two PT6 power sections with a combining gearbox. The TwinPac® was used on a variety of civil and military helicopters including the renowned Bell 212 and 412. During the mid-1970s, P&WC also adapted the PT6 for use in agricultural aircraft, helping them become much more capable and productive.

The PT6 has also been used for a wide range of non-aviation applications over the course of the years through the ST6 derivative. These have included electrical generators in pumping stations for gas and oil pipelines and propulsion systems for ships and air cushion vehicles. The engine has even been used to power snowplows, trucks, trains and Indy race cars owned by the flamboyant Andy Granatelli.

Aviation applications for the PT6 have continued to proliferate as the power of the engine has grown. P&WC has constantly taken advantage of evolutions in aerodynamics and materials to enhance the performance of the PT6 without significantly increasing its size. For example, the 40, 50 and 60 series, which feature two-stage power turbines and other enhancements, are used on numerous high performance business and regional airplanes, from the King Air 200 to the Beech 1900. The reliability of the PT6, with its low in-flight shutdown rate, also paved the way for an entire new category of aircraft, the single-engine turboprop, which includes the Cessna Caravan, Pilatus PC-12, Socata TBM 850 and Piper Meridian.

Other innovations on the PT6 have reduced emissions, increased maintenance intervals, and further enhanced ease of operation with the introduction of Digital Engine Controls on the large PT6 engines used on military trainer aircraft.

Looking forwardDeveloping new technologies and making sure the right pipeline of products is ready to meet customer demand and create markets are cornerstones of P&WC’s business, and have been key factors behind the success of the PT6. P&WC has demonstrated a history of injecting technology in its products, as witnessed by its certification of 89 PT6 models in less than 50 years, and will continue to develop and introduce improvements to the PT6 and its other engine families in the coming years.

With this in mind, P&WC recently created a new multidisciplinary innovation team to focus on the future. Technologies developed by the innovation team will be leveraged on new and existing engine models, thus allowing P&WC to continue its long-standing tradition of continually adding value through technology evolution and innovation. Stay tuned!

701Hemisphere GPS

Real-time aircraft tracking, on-board background maps, low cost systems with moving map displays, laser altimeter compatibility, wireless transfer of logs…

This is just a short list of new items that Hemisphere GPS will be showing at the upcoming 2010 NAAA convention in Savannah, GA.

With a greater need for speed and a desire for more information, pilots have been outpacing their existing guidance products and demanding more from their GPS system suppliers. In Dec 2009, Hemisphere GPS released the IntelliStar system putting a platform in front of users that would launch them into a new era of technological offerings. With this new product release, features are now available for agricultural guidance systems that were just not possible with the limited capacity of previous systems.

On-board Background MapsOn-board mapping coupled with guidance is one of the new feature sets that are finally available for the aerial application industry. It will be on display in December with the IntelliStar system from Hemisphere GPS. Available map sets include Open Street Map and Sectional Maps.

Open Street Map is much more than just a simple set of maps for viewing on IntelliStar. Openstreetmap.org is an Internet wiki system (like Wikipedia) that allows the collaborative efforts of all users to continuously improve and update content – in this case, specifically to create better maps around the world. Pilots or office personnel can record windmills and power lines or identify obstacles and potential exclusion areas and enter them all within this wiki site. Public updating of the mapping system is not only encouraged but it is required to improve existing information. This mapping ability offers an evolving data system that has the workforce of an entire population.

Hemisphere GPS allows the pilot to upload these maps for use on their

IntelliStar system. The editing tool is free and allows users to put new features into the mapping website in order to retrieve an updated map shortly thereafter. As more users put new items in place, more complete data is available for every pilot to view and use.

Sectional background maps are also available for upload to IntelliStar. Although these types of maps may require recurring fees to purchase sectional updates, they are currently offered for the entirety of the US.

All maps can be viewed in 2D or 3D mode. They are called out as a separate mapping function within the IntelliTrac program. Both Open Street Map and Sectional Maps can be loaded together and viewed as sequential mapping pages on IntelliStar.

Satloc BantamAnother product being released at the NAAA convention by Hemisphere GPS isSatloc Bantam. This system was designed as a low cost guidance solution with a moving map display. Although the software features are limited, it includes a highly bright screen and it is capable of interfacing with flow control systems. Satloc Bantam supports the loading of Job files and guides pilots

using the same patterns as the M3, as it uses a similar version of AirTrac software.

Satloc Bantam is easy to install. It has a small CPU (3.15”x9.55”x5.40”) with just 5 cables. Our Crescent GPS board is internal to the CPU and overall weight of the CPU is 4.1 lbs. The screen is small to match at 5.1”Hx7.9”Wx1.4”D and 1.7 lbs. Users have the option to upgrade the screen of Satloc Bantam to the larger, more robust, high quality screens that are currently available with the M3. Two USB ports allow logging ability to be extended into the cockpit with a remote USB cable mount option. A lightweight lightbar and optional keypad are also available making the system ideal for helicopter installs.

HQ Asset Tracking SystemAircraft and other asset tracking is now available for the Bantam, M3 and IntelliStar guidance systems. Iridium satellite modems can be interfaced with these GPS systems and set up through AirTrac or IntelliTrac software. Real-time viewing is established on the Internet through Hemisphere GPS’ website. The secure HQ site allows viewing and data access to be restricted to one single user or be extended to multiple accounts created by the user. The pilot can configure which pieces of data (such

as Lat/Lon, Altitude, Flow Rates, etc) are transmitted through to the site for real time observation and/or recording. Data is available to be viewed from anywhere in the world and the owner of the account determines who can view the information. Also, logs can be gathered for analysis and reporting through the HQ site. Any and all logged information is saved for as long as the user determines. Deleting logs and accounts can occur instantaneously by the owner of the account as well.

Cellular-based modem options are also available with IntelliStar to reduce the cost of data transmissions but are limited to cellular coverage offerings of specific service providers.

Hemisphere GPS will proudly display IntelliStar (with background maps and available modem options), Satloc Bantam, and the HQ asset tracking system at the upcoming NAAA convention in Savannah, GA on December 7th.

Enhanced Mapping, Satloc Bantam lead the way for a host of new feature and system offerings from Hemisphere GPS in 2011

Continuing improvements from Air Tractor on display in Savannah

The AT-502B, along with an AT-602 will be on display at the NAAA Convention in Savannah.

Air Tractor AT-502B and AT-602 aircraft on display December 6-9 at the NAAA Convention will feature a selection of improved engine instrument gauges. The new oil pressure, fuel pressure and torque gauges received FAA certification in August and will be standard equipment in 2011 production aircraft.

“We’ve been evaluating wet line engine instruments from various manufacturers for several years,” reports Jim Hirsch, Vice President of Engineering at Air Tractor. “We are now working with a supplier whose instrument designs meet our quality and accuracy specifications. The new instruments have received FAA certification and our supplier is ramping up production of the gauges for installation in 2011 model year aircraft.” Hirsch predicts pilots will notice an improvement. “At-a-glance readability and accuracy of these new gauges is much improved.”

Air Tractor now offers an optional drag-reducing gatebox fairing for the AT-802. The new fiberglass fairing fits the popular Transland 10-inch hydraulic gate box. Flight tests show the

fairing reduces air turbulence and fuel consumption. In early 2010, Air Tractor conducted a series of tests to determine the effect of the fiberglass fairing toward reducing drag. An Air Tractor test aircraft, equipped with a PT6A-65AG engine, 115” diameter prop, 250-gallon wing fuel tanks, and flying at a typical working speed of 155 MPH, experienced about 4 GPH in fuel savings. The test pilot reported the aircraft was noticeably smoother in flight, with less turbulence felt in the control stick. A minimal fuel savings of 3 GPH could reduce annual fuel consumption about 1,500 gallons. The gate box fairing kit is now available from Air Tractor for the AT-802.

Air Tractor reports that five ag operators are field testing a new ram air filter during the 2010 spraying season. The new air filter design is demonstrating airflow and seal improvements over the current production filter. Air filter project manager Kyle Schroeder notes that the field test results are being studied and evaluations of the new filters are continuing, with plans for the new filter to enter full production sometime in 2011.

One of the first Air Tractor AT-504 training/spray aircraft sold in the U.S., owned by Curless Flying Service, now has several hundred hours of flight time. Harley Curless reports the aircraft “is one awesome training platform. It’s unbelievable how you can use the 504 to introduce someone to a 502 Air Tractor.”

Curless reports that he trained one of his pilots, JT Kapers, in the 504 this past season, transitioning from the AT-402 to the AT-502B. “JT is a graduate of one of the ag [flying] schools, and he’s been with us two years. He started in a Pawnee then moved into a 401, then into AT-402 and now into the AT-502B – a nice slow progression. I flew a few hours with JT in the 504 and turned him loose in it. JT started by hauling a couple of hundred gallons, then progressed to 250, and then to 300, and more over a progression of time.”

In the AT-504, instructor and student sit side by side for easier communication between instructor and student. Says Curless, “whatever the instructor sees, the student sees, and visa versa. And

with the GPS right in front of both pilots, you can do GPS transitioning as well. The instructor also has control of the throttle, so he can simulate slow, loaded flight. You sit in the same position in the airplane that you’ll sit a 502 or 402 or any other model; it’s the same view over the cowling.”

“An instructor can explain something to a student, then demonstrate it with the airplane. The student can follow along and see what the instructor does with his hands and feet. It’s just so easy to do sitting side-by-side like that,” Curless adds.

The AT-504’s performance specifications mirror the AT-502B in speed, capacity and overall performance. Curless says there’s no difference from the 502B. “Performance-wise with the 502B, there’s no difference. I just get in and go full.” He jokes, “And the extra seat makes a great desk for my maps and stuff.”

Johnston Aircraft Service 218We want to say a heartfelt thank you to our customers/friends in our industry. There is no way we could still be here without you. It is especially appropriate now, as several long time friends are no longer with us and our mortality has been brought home.

The 63 plus years of our association have seen many changes and continuous progress. From the early open cockpit radial engined biplanes to the sleek air conditioned enclosed cabin turbine aircraft of today, we have come a long way. As our aircraft have improved, so have our application systems. Round booms directly behind the wings, T Jet and Delevan nozzles, while still seeing some use, have mostly been supplanted with streamlined dropped booms, CP nozzles (we are a distributor), rotary atomizers for special applications, and electrostatic spray systems. Dry break couplers (we distribute Emco, Wheaton, Buckeye) have virtually eliminated chemical spills while loading. All of this has helped us do a much better job for the grower, consumer and environment.

The progress of our industry is not only in the U.S., but now throughout the world and we are very proud to have played a role in all of this. Today, we are actively engaged in supporting and improving our worldwide agricultural industry. We offer Thrush wing spar cap improvement kits; Piper Brave wing spar cap kits; Cascade Walter turbine conversion kits and ram air inlet kits for Thrush and Air Tractor; Walter turbine conversion Thrush aircraft; ag aircraft sales; airframe repair, maintenance, and modification; engine overhaul; and the BEST parts support in the ag aviation industry!

Please come and say hello - we are in BOOtH 218.”

It is always refreshing to find a company producing and marketing a product which has improvements over the comparable OEM product. There is one such company in Granite City, Illinois, APS (Aviation Products Systems, Inc.). APS manufacturers and markets FAA/PMA brake discs, linings and rivets.

The APS BlackSteel® Discs are manufactured at the APS facility using state of the art CNC lathes. The brake discs are machined from one-piece forgings. This is an important distinction because the one-piece forging means that the directional grain flow of the metal follows the contour of the disc, providing a much stronger unit. After the final machining process is complete,

the discs receive the signature Black Steel® heat treating process. This process is a thermo-chemical heat treatment introducing the steel discs to salt, nitrogen, and oxygen. This treatment greatly improves the surface properties giving the disc enhanced wear characteristics and provides a high degree of corrosion resistance to the steel. The distinctive black color is a by-product of the heat treating process, hence, the BlackSteel®.

APS BlackSteel® linings come in semi-metallic and metallic. The metallic linings are made from a more durable material and innovative design than other brands. The semi-metallic linings are made with a patented Kevlar®

formula which allows the linings to grip the discs better without losing as much material.

APS BlackSteel® discs and linings are FAA PMA approved parts. The PMA approval process is a rigorous process of design approval and testing that yields a part meeting, or in most cases exceeding, the original OEM requirements. APS now has a complete list of applications on most single and light twin general aviation aircraft, including all of the aircraft used for aerial applications having Cleveland Brakes. You can view the approval list on their website at www.apsbrakes.com .

APS brake products are designed and fabricated with the durability

to withstand harsh environmental conditions, as well as the heavy braking associated with agricultural work, resulting in greater safety margins. APS brake products offer these advantages at a very economical price, providing lower operating costs to the operators. With several dealers in the United States strategically located, availability of the APS brake products is excellent.

APS brake products are a truly innovative product at a cost effective price and worth your time to explore. Check it out at www.apsbrakes.com!

Constantly looking for innovations that can create new opportunities, GRAINCO FS and Pontiac flying service learned to adapt and seek out new ways to help their producer customers in their quest to achieve high yields.

Headline changes the gameThe launch of Headline® and Headline AMP™ fungicides has changed the game for GRAINCO. The introduction of these key products captured retailers’, applicators’ and growers’ attention and expanded GRAINCO’s business offerings.

Headline is a fast-acting, broad-spectrum fungicide with a high level of activity on major diseases that threaten yield and crop quality. Growers are also discovering the Plant Health benefits offered by Headline and Headline AMP.

A full-service retailer, GRAINCO operates from seven locations and provides seed, fertilizer, chemicals and spraying services, as well as petroleum products.

“Our growers are seeing increases of 15 to 25 bushels per acre when Headline

Meeting the needs of modern agricultureInnovation leads to excellence in Illinois

is applied,” said Scott Reel, Agronomy and Crops Marketing Manager. “They know they can come to us for sound advice and a focus on what’s important to them: maximizing profits from the acres they farm. We wouldn’t endorse the products if we couldn’t stand behind them.”

Technology pays offGRAINCO partnered with BASF to update its online ordering, invoicing and application mapping capabilities to further streamline operations and increase productivity.

The digital mapping system creates shape maps that can be uploaded into databases and then relayed into the cockpits of the aerial application crews for more accurate and timely applications.

“We send our aerial applicators an e-mail with the information about the fields they will fly and the products to apply, taking out any guesswork and increasing the speed of communications,” Reel said. “The applicator can then take the card out

of the plane at the end of the day and download it straight to the system for their invoicing. It has given us a real edge over our competition.”

Pontiac helps GRAINCO take flightTo implement the new system, GRAINCO partnered with Scott Petersen and the Pontiac Flying Service team. Reel works with Pontiac to complete as much as half of the aerial application of Headline and Headline AMP each season.

“GRAINCO gives us the orders for the fields, which are in the GPS database under unique 5-digit codes,” Petersen said. “We can put an entire day’s jobs on one GPS card, up to 50 fields at a time.”

For Pontiac, this means significant reductions in time spent locating fields, and eliminates wrong-spray and applications that are not properly timed for the growth cycle of individual fields.

Bulk tanks mean big savingsTraditionally, the ground crew had to unpack numerous “packaged” containers, create tank mixes, load the aircraft, triple-rinse containers and

properly dispose of all packaging. GRAINCO FS was the first retailer

to offer bulk tanks of Headline to its customers. This year, Pontiac Flying Service installed their own Headline bulk tank at the home facility in Pontiac. Loads can now be metered directly into the mix tank and loaded on the airplane quickly and efficiently.

“Our guys on the loading pad absolutely love the bulk tank because it reduces the handling time as much as 60 percent,” Petersen said. “When you have seven or eight planes coming in one after another, you don’t want them to have to idle on the tarmac too long.”

With a bulk tank, they simply meter out the correct amount throughout the day, and make the call for a bulk refill which is delivered within 48 hours.

“Our ground crew can get the planes refueled, reloaded and given updated mapping information in just five to 10 minutes now,” Petersen said. “We need less equipment, fewer ground staff and can get more done every day.”

Growers that work with GRAINCO and Pontiac for Headline and Headline AMP spraying can expect great service and great results.

Pontiac applied Headline AMP to corn acres in Illinois this year. All signs point to strong performance and yield benefits in 2010.

607DynaNav Systems

Earlier this year we introduced a new product to market, our DynaFlight-AirAg-E series. In fact, it was an introduction of an entirely new approach and concept to aerial guidance systems. Bold statement? You bet. Read on for an explanation to back up this claim.

In many conversations that we have had with pilots and operators of the aerial ag industry around the world, the one constant is the continuous change and the expensive process necessary to keep current, both in technology and the ways that we do business.

With this challenge in mind, through our design of the E-Series, we have made great strides to resolve these issues. In the technology industry, and especially products such as ours, technology changes at a very rapid rate, and the challenge to stay current both at the manufacturing level as well as for the customer can be very difficult. Obsolescence often rears its ugly head

Growth through DynaNav’s new E-Series

with the result that if a customer wishes to stay current and get the benefits of newer product design, he is often faced with complete system changes at a huge expense.

On the other hand, a manufacturer, through his supply chain can benefit by exercising a “trade in”, approach. This is where the end user is offered a price in trade for his old equipment and for the supply of new product. As the old product being traded is generally worth very little in the true market, the price of the new is often inflated to cover the short fall. In this way the manufacturer retains his margins and his customer base and is able to repeat the process indefinitely, at least until a more creative solution is offered. The problem with this method of marketing for the end user is that his options are very limited and generally his costs are significantly higher.

By being modular in concept and

completely software upgradable through the internet, the DynaFlight products are continuously updated from anywhere in the world at any time. In this way obsolescence is never an issue and our product retains its value and usefulness to the end user.

The E-Series takes our modular design to the next step. It is now quite apparent the pilots primary need is to have excellent job guidance as well as to have instant job review - this is where our entry level E-Series starts. Fortunately, as our original design philosophy is modular, the owner can simply add modules and software to the E-Series at any time to meet the needs for his operations.

In this way, we at DynaNav have met our design goals of “simple by design and flexible in application”, being very much to the benefit of our customers by eliminating obsolescence, reducing his costs and increasing his productivity with

a current and upgradeable product. The E-Series initially addresses

the needs of the small or start up operator by meeting his basic needs and available at an entry level price, however, as his business grows, he can add whatever attribute will assist him to grow his business further. There is no restriction as to what could be added, and it is possible both economically and technically to grow his system to the specifications of the full DynaFlight-AirAgII™ professional system.

One thing that we have learned over time is that each Air Ag operation has different needs and requirements. We are proud to be able to offer a flexible system to meet your needs now and into the future. The choice is yours. Come grow with Dynanav.

Flight Plan Online brings together some of the best technologies to give you a better way to communicate with your customers and manage your business so you can focus on spraying more acres.

You and your pilots will be able to spend more productive time in the air and less time doing paperwork. Your customers will appreciate the professional and accurate mapping that Flight Plan Online provides as well as

Product preview from AgriSmart Information Systems LLC

406its ease of use. They will welcome the ability to track the progress of their job orders with no phone calls.

The most powerful component of Flight plan Online is the ability to process job orders using a centralized online system. This allows you or your

customers to submit accurate jobs orders with geo referenced field maps powered by Surety® Customized Online Mapping from AgriData, Inc. As job orders come in you can review them for accuracy and formally accept the work. Job orders can also include sensitive area alerts and adjacent crop identification to let you assess the level of risk. You can see all outstanding jobs on a map screen to filter those jobs into the most efficient batches for spraying. You can easily schedule job batches with common products and geographic proximity. Flight Plan Online generates all the information needed by the pilot, including loading sheets, individual job maps, and master maps that give an overview of all field locations.

You can easily upload shape files to your guidance system to make the most of the guidance technology that is already in your plane. After spraying you can record actual application information and

if desired, download the data from your guidance system to include as-sprayed imagery. You can then generate invoices from the job details already captured in the process, even on the same day you spray! Flight Plan Online also acts as your electronic system of record keeping, allowing you to generate a formal application report any time to document regulatory compliance.

Our customers tell us that Flight Plan Online makes their lives better, takes stress out of the cockpit, makes them more efficient internally and brings better communication to their customers.

Bottom line, Flight Plan Online will help you earn more revenue and maximize your profits by making the most efficient use of your resources. For more information on Flight Plan Online visit their website at www.agrismartis.com or give them a call at 800 890-6945. See them at Booth #406 at the show!

NAAA chose “Stewards of the Sky” as the theme of the 2010 Convention & Exposition because agricultural aviation and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Who better to open the convention then than a true steward of the sky, albeit a steward of a different sort?

We are pleased to introduce

Howie Franklin as the

keynote speaker for NAAA’s

Kickoff Breakfast.

Franklin served and flew with five presidents on Air Force One and is the only person to do so. Serving in the United States Air Force as the head flight attendant for Air Force One is quite different from how you may normally perceive that job title. Franklin had

many important responsibilities dealing with security, critical timetables, unusual requests and specific details. He was on hugging terms with most of the first families and saw them at the best and worst of times.

From his fly-on-the-wall vantage point, Franklin will offer attendees an insider’s perspective, sharing details about the unique characteristics of Air Force One planes and tales about the powerful and famous passengers he had the privilege of serving over the course of five administrations. He has hundreds of fascinating and funny stories about the presidents and dignitaries he served, and always speaks with the greatest respect.

Howie Franklin spent 29 years in the Air Force, including 18 years on Air Force One. After retiring from the Air Force, he became the airport manager for the Brunswick County Airport in southeastern North Carolina, which the Atlantic Flyer dubbed “The Little Airport with the Big Heart.”

Flock Buster repels birdsSave your crops and increase your yields! Birds have been a problem for growers as far back as anyone can remember. Whether it is through partial or complete crop loss, birds are responsible for decreased profits and not to mention, countless headaches. With no signs of this feeding frenzy slowing, one must question, “What can be done about these troublesome birds?” A company in West Fargo, ND has the answer: “Flock Buster.”

Flock Buster, a bird pest control product which is the first of its kind, is a 100% ecological friendly bird repellent that can be used anywhere birds are undesirable. Either mixing for farm aerial distribution or ground sprayer distribution, Flock Buster is easy to use and proven effective.

Flock Buster is an extremely valuable tool for bird management in sunflowers, corn, wheat and rice as well as Canadian Geese feeding on corn, grain, beans and sunflowers. In its third season, Flock Buster has already helped numerous farmers reclaim their fields.

Flock Buster has many uses outside of the agricultural industry as well. The product has proven to be an essential part of an effective wildlife management program assisting airports with bird control. Flock Buster is also useful in eliminating birds at landfills, golf courses, marinas, parks and any other outdoor recreational areas.

For more information on Flock Buster, visit the company’s website at www.flockbuster.com or call 877-NO-CROWS.

Aero Engines 813Aero-Engines, Inc. was founded in 1955 to service the needs of operators using Continental W-670

and Pratt & Whitney R-985 and R-1340 engines. The company

was founded by eight experienced

mechanics and continues

55 years later to have the most

experienced and

dependable crew in the business.

The current partnership ranges from a minimum of 30 years to 40

years of experience with the company.Centrally located in Los Angeles since

its inception, our shop continues to be the leader in providing quality and dependable overhauls of Continental W-670 and Pratt & Whitney R-985 and R-1340 engines.

We have the most complete facilities in the country with an engine shop equipped to do our own inspections such as Magnetic Particle (Magnaflux) Dye Penetrant (Zyglo), Ultrasonic and Dimensional.

Our cylinder shop’s strict standards include fully “metallized” cylinders, 100% guide replacement, new or serviceable pistons and a choice of “steel” or “nu chrome” barrels.

Our accessory shop overhauls our magnetos, carburetors, starters and generators using the finest of parts and equipment.

Our machine shop is the best equipped of its kind, with cam and cylinder grinder, balancing machines and much, much more.

The parts department has an extensive supply of parts, enough engines to support our extensive exchange program.

Aero-Engines, Inc has provided service to a large number of ag operators over the years, but has also overhauled engines for commercial and private aircraft such as the DeHavilland Beavers and Otters, Stearmans, Staggerwing Beachcraft, etc. Many of our engines have been on the winning aircraft at the Reno Air Races in the AT-6 category. Last year’s first, second and third place finishers in Nick Macy, Al Goss and Dennis Buehn.

Super 600Aero-Engines is the home of the Super 600, officially known as the Vintage Radials altered Pratt & Whitney R-1340. The engine incorporates a modified version of Pratt & Whitney R-2800 cylinders, thus increasing reliability and performance of the engine.

The increased cooling fin capacity, higher rated manifold pressure, larger valves, forged heads, higher horsepower rating and increased compression ratio of the R-2800 cylinders is quite an improvement over the original R-1340 cylinders. The Super 600 engine, approved under STC SE01200LA, is rated at the same horsepower as the stock R-1340, but operators of the 25 engines in existence believe there are some “hidden horses” that can provide a boost when needed.

Presently these engines are being used on Air Tractors, Ag-Cats and Thrush aircraft.

We serve you with pleasure; confident we can supply you with the quality engine to suit your needs.

MAINTENANCE is a MUST! even with CP’s!!!

Keep your CP® Nozzles and Check Valves in top shape.

Replace seals and O-rings annually.

®

CP’s Nozzles are the BEST CHOICE! or Just starting out?

CP’s website doesn’t look as “folksy” as it used to be. It works better than ever!

This year, CP® Products Company rolled out a completely new website. It takes full advantage of new web design technology. It looks better. It flows better. It is easier to navigate and the spreadsheets are easier to use. A comprehensive “download” section has been added so that pdf files can be printed out and set-up. Spray quality spreadsheets can be downloaded from the site. All the tools ag pilots and ground applicators need to set up equipment with CP’s nozzles are there, either to use on-line or to download.

The first CP® website was designed on the warehouse wall. The company had customers in other parts of the world who needed information about CP® Nozzles but, because of time differences,

CP Products 511www.cpproductsinc.com — Faster — More comprehensive — Easier to use

couldn’t call during office hours. Some were in such remote locations that fax messaging was impossible. A website was the perfect 24/7 solution, but neither Bob Evans nor Chris Christopher knew what the internet was or how it worked. So, web “pages” were designed, stapled to the warehouse wall and string was pinned from one page to another to illustrate what the “links” were supposed to do. They may not have been convinced of its value, but the founders let the project move forward and CP’s website was born. The website turned out to be even more valuable to the industry than originally anticipated. It is used, not just by applicators, but by universities and research institutions in the US and all over the world.

Speed is improved because web technology is much more sophisticated.

Spreadsheets are easier to use and results show more quickly.

Navigation is easier and flow from one area to another is more logical. Switching from one section to another doesn’t require a return to the home page.

The download section is the

most important addition.

All tables, seminar handouts and maintenance information the Company has for the aerial application industry are in pdf format. Printing is easy. While spreadsheet calculators are designed to be used on-line, they are easier to use if downloaded into one’s own computer. The Calibration Spreadsheet written by Dr.

Dennis Gardisser can be used with either US or metric measures. There is a quick conversion calculator to convert knots to miles per hour. All the current USDA-ARS Spray Quality Spreadsheets are there and more will be added as new ones become available.

Feedback from our customers is very important! Let us know if there are things which should be added to the website, if something isn’t working correctly and if there are typographical or grammatical errors.

CP® Products Company is fortunate to be involved in an industry so vital to production agriculture. The work is extremely important and our customers are terrific people!

NationAirAviation Insurance

In its 32nd year of operation, NationAir Aviation Insurance is one of the largest specialty aviation brokerages in the United States, with nine locations across the country. We represent all types of aircraft owners and operators, from homebuilts to regional airlines. NationAir is a top 10 broker of all aviation insurers and a top five broker of many underwriters. The sheer volume of business that we place with these insurers gives us the levels of influence of which all of our clients benefit.

The aerial application business is a significant specialization within our company, and we have been representing aerial applicators for over 30 years. NationAir knows how challenging your business can be and, most importantly, what you need from your broker. Our influence and collective experience will lead to you getting the most competitive rates available and also allows us early access to information about new developments coming from these markets.

We also know that it takes more than one person to properly handle your insurance needs. Even if you only talk to one person at NationAir, there is always a complete team of service professionals that do the necessary work behind the scenes, to assure that you get a fast response to things such as certificate requests that we know can be very time critical. All brokerages need a strong infrastructure to allow their brokers the time to do their jobs. While this may be something that many of our clients never see, it is a vital part of any successful brokerage operation.

In recent years, NationAir has added additional services for our clients including Claims Advisors for those

situations where our clients need someone on their side when dealing with their insurer, and a Contracts professional who is ready to review any contract that you are required to sign in

your aerial operation. These services are offered to NationAir clients for no additional charge.

Throughout the year, we are able to network with our customers

and associates within the aerial application

industry at the annual National Agricultural Aviation

Association convention and other state association events. Therefore, we decided to create a newsletter to share current insurance-related information with operators throughout the year. Fly Low, Fly Safe not only educates operators, but also provides an opportunity for you to present your aviation insurance questions and concerns. The newsletter is published four times a year and includes articles from various professionals within the industry including NationAir Aviation Insurance brokers, underwriters and claims representatives from all of the aviation insurance companies insuring aerial applicators. To see past issues of Fly Low, Fly Safe, please visit http://nationair.com/commercial/agaviation.php.

The agricultural aerial application business is very competitive and you probably get many requests from brokers to handle your insurance needs. At NationAir, we’ll help you find the right coverage at the best rates possible, and help you review your coverage periodically to make sure it keeps up with your changing business needs. AgSync offers web-based products designed to manage the wide range of complexities in the crop protection and fertilizer application process. The program is ideal for pilots, who spray the same fields regularly, need to quickly print work orders, provide maps for outside pilots, and prefer to communicate with growers over the phone, fax or email. The four main features that make this an ideal mapping solution: ease of locating fields, the field database, variety of maps available in the system and the ease of uploading .job, .no1, or shapefiles to a GPS unit. Cost for AgSync-Lite is $995 annually.

AgSync-Manager: Offers the same features as AgSync-Lite plus the ability to track order progress, utilize the CDMS crop protection product database, sort pesticide combinations, visually plan

missions, track pesticides applied, and quickly build verification maps. This program is designed for aerial applicators to streamline application efficiency, organize record keeping, and build reports including pilot activity, pesticide volume, and invoicing. The added benefit is the ability to manage risk, liability, and regulatory compliance. Cost for AgSync-Manager is $5000 annually.

TaskForce-Central: Operates with the same functionality as AgSync-Manager plus it communicates with TaskForce-R,C,G (Retailers, Consultants, Growers), programs in real-time. TaskForce-Central is ideal for aerial applicators with customers that need the flexibility to create, edit, submit and track orders at their convenience via email, or online using the TaskForce-R,C,G program. Heat is the enemy to a turbine engine! The hotter the climate, the more difficult it is to maintain the power necessary to carry heavy loads. If a turbine engine could speak, “it’s all about….air” is what it would say. In addition to fuel, air availability is critical to getting the performance that an owner requires of a turbine engine.

Cascade Aircraft Conversions continues to provide products to the ag industry that improve the performance of any PT-6 powered fleet. Tom Thomas, owner of McCool Air Service, Inc. says, “In 1998 I took the giant step to a turbine when I decided to purchase a 510 Thrush. I have enjoyed flying it the last 12 years and have 4000 hours in the aircraft.

I began learning about the Cascade Pressure Cowl from another pilot, and at the national and state association

If you can’t stand the heat…call Cascade!

conventions. After hearing so many positive comments about it, I decided to make the purchase. This season was my first with the Pressure Cowl. I have a 2500 ft. airstrip and I am able to get off the ground about 30% quicker. The ITT temps run 50 degrees lower than they were running, so I know that in adding the Pressure Cowl I have increased my engine life. An additional benefit is my fuel consumption is lower and the plane is quicker in the turns and ferrying time. I also appreciate the easy access in servicing the turbine and in gaining access to the air filter assembly, plus the fact that I never have to purchase more filters. I am extremely happy and satisfied with the Cascade Pressure Cowl!

In addition to the successful Pressure Cowl installations on all PT-6 powered Air Tractor and Thrush, Cascade Aircraft

Conversions is now an Authorized Service Center for the GE M601 and H80 turbine engines. Cascade is positioned to offer engine exchanges, line maintenance, parts, and scheduling for heavy maintenance or overhauled engines. Cascade Aircraft Conversions

has been selling turbine conversions for Air Tractor and Thrush for more than 12 years. Service after the sale is more than a tag line for the Cascade crew, they are committed to making sure GE M601 engine owners keep their planes in the air continuously producing revenue.

Performance of an Aerial Variable-Rate Application System with a Fan Driven Chemical Pumpby Dan martin and S.J. Thomson

An aerial variable-rate application system on an Air Tractor 402B with a fan-driven chemical pump will be evaluated with respect to response to rate change, deposition of spray relative to prescription boundaries and spray application accuracy. The variable-rate system is composed of a Hemisphere GPS Air IntelliStar with IntelliTrac software and a 20 Hz GPS receiver in conjunction with an IntelliFlow automatic flow controller. Application rate and ground speed are communicated to the IntelliFlow flow controller by the IntelliTrac software so that the prescription application rate can be applied. Application rates ranging from 0 to 6 gallons per acre (gpa) will be assigned to the sub-blocks of the test site and a prescription will be prepared for use with the variable-rate application system. Response to rate changes and application accuracy will be evaluated from data captured from the automatic flow control system and the placement of spray will be evaluated using water sensitive spray cards positioned with respect to zone boundaries and parallel to the flight line.

Fusion of Remotely Sensed Data from Airborne and Ground-based Sensors for Cotton Regrowth Studyby H. Zhang, Yubin lan, C. Yang, C. Suh, J. Westbrook, W.C. Hoffmann and R. Lacey

The need to minimize populations of overwintering boll weevils (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) is widely recognized by eradication programs. One tactic to reduce overwintering survival of boll weevils is timely post-harvest crop destruction. Even where cotton plants (Gossypium hirsutum

L.) are destroyed after harvest, regrowth from stalks or growth of volunteer plants from unharvested seed can occur when environmental conditions permit. Timely detection and remediation of volunteer cotton plants in both cultivated and non-cultivated habitats is critical for completing boll weevil eradication in Central and South Texas. This study investigates the use of aerial imagery and ground-based remotely sensed data for the discrimination of different crop species and timely detection of cotton plants over large areas. Airborne multispectral imagery and handheld hyperspectral data were acquired at multiple times over two large agricultural farms in Brazos County in Texas during the 2010 growing season. The performances of imagery data and handheld data for the discrimination were examined individually; then multisensor data fusion technique was applied on both aerial and ground datasets in order to improve the accuracy of the discrimination. The overall results indicate the potential of multisensor data fusion of remotely sensed data from different sensors as an effective tool for cotton regrowth studies.

Bio: Dr. Bradley Fritz is an Agricultural Engineer with the USDA-Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in College Station, Texas. Role of Air Induction Nozzles in High Speed Airstreamsby Clint Hoffmann, B. Fritz and Y. Lan

Air induction nozzles have been used for several years in ground spray applications as a means of generating large droplets and reducing the potential for off-target movement of sprays. Like any new technology, it is important to gain a thorough understanding of how these air induction nozzles work in high speed airstreams before placing them on aerial application equipment. Several nozzles will be evaluated under helicopter and fixed-wing aerial application conditions to determine the effects of nozzle type,

USDA-ARS Aerial Application Technology Group (AAT). These models are available for a number of commonly used aerial spray nozzles and allow users to estimate the spray droplet size based on the nozzle setup, orientation, spray pressure and airspeed. Presently these models are only valid for spray pressures up to 60 psi and airspeeds up to 160 mph, but with the continued performance improvements and developments in modern agricultural aircraft, there is a need to investigate the effects that airspeeds beyond the 160 mph limit have on spray atomization. This manuscript will detail the features of a new high speed wind tunnel system at the AAT facilities that is capable of generating airspeeds up to 220 mph, as well as a scrubber system that will allow for future atomization studies to be conducted with active ingredients. The atomization characteristics of several aerial spray nozzles at airspeeds exceeding 160 mph are measured and reported. Determining how these nozzles perform at higher airspeeds will help to improve present nozzles and/or develop new nozzles or application techniques to counter the increased atomization seen at these higher airspeeds. Additionally, these new facilities will allow for expanding the Spray Nozzle Models

Factors Affecting Droplet Size, Coverage and Weed Control with Sharpen Herbicideby Gary Fellows, R. Barbosa, R. Vidrine and A. Rhodes

Droplet size, number of spray droplets and concentration of a herbicidal active ingredient within the droplet may impact efficacy of products sprayed aerially. Sharpen herbicide, active ingredient saflufenacil, is a new herbicide from BASF in the Kixor family of herbicides. Sharpen controls numerous broadleaf weeds, is an effective burn down product in front of many crops and has an aerial label that allows total carrier volumes down to three gallons per acre. To work effectively, Sharpen requires adequate coverage on the weed leaf surface. Droplet size models have been developed to assist applicators with pattern testing and to optimize product performance. Aircraft speed, nozzle type and orifice size, spray pressure, nozzle deflection angle and product(s) being sprayed affect droplet size and droplet number produced by each nozzle.

Based on results from previous research and a desire to maximize efficacy of Sharpen herbicide, a study was conducted in June 2010 to compare expected droplet size with actual droplet size of water and a herbicide solution, to evaluate different boom set-ups for droplet size and droplet number and to determine weed control with selected treatments of herbicide and boom set-ups. Based on this study, droplet size and droplet number are affected most by nozzle deflection angle, and secondarily by spray pressure. A 30° angle produced smaller and greater number of droplets than no deflection, and higher pressure created larger and fewer droplets. The expected size of droplets from a model was close to actual as long as a 5° or 30° deflection angle was included in the model. Droplet size produced with water only was similar to droplet size from the actual herbicide solution.

Low Volume Fungicide Applications to Cornby Scott Bretthauer and R. Wolf

This study examined low volume fungicide applications to corn. The treatments included various spray application rates, two nozzle types and spray solution with and without crop oil concentrate. Spray coverage and droplet size were measured using Kromekote cards and Vision Pink dye, with the analysis performed with DropletScan. Spray deposition was measured using mylar plates and Caracid Brilliant Flavine

fluorescent dye applied at a rate of 10 g/acre regardless of spray application rate. The study was conducted over two years, with three fields evaluated for spray coverage and deposition each year. Within each field, two plots were taken per treatment, with 10 corn plants sampled per plot. On each corn plant, Kromekote cards were placed on leaves one foot out from the stalk in the top, middle and lower part of the canopy. In addition, a plate was attached to the stalk at ear height. This plate held the mylar sampler and an additional Kromekote card. Differences in deposition, coverage and droplet size

Temporal Indications of Atmospheric Stability Affecting Off-Target Spray Drift in the Mid-South U.S.by Steven thomson, Y. Huang and B. Fritz

This study is designed to determine atmospheric conditions favorable for long-distance spray drift deleterious to susceptible crops downwind from spray application. The ultimate goal is to incorporate this information into new guidelines for pilots on weather conditions and times of the day to reduce

off-target drift potential in the Mid-south. A tall meteorological monitoring tower equipped with six precision (and periodically calibrated) thermistors at 14.7, 29.5, 59.4, 74.5, 89.6 and 95.5 m heights and four wind speed anemometers at 14.9, 39.7, 64.5 and 89.6 m heights will be logged continuously throughout the day during the entire growing season. Wind speed and temperature data will be used to calculate atmospheric stability ratios, and temporal and spatial temperature gradient patterns at different altitudes will be determined. Periods when wind patterns and stable air conditions occur that are known to favor off-target drift will be determined from tower data. Temperature inversion periods favorable for drift will be examined for strength, time of occurrence and duration. Probabilities of inversion conditions as a function of time-of-day and weather will be outlined, and preliminary guidelines for safe spraying in the Mid-south will be developed from atmospheric stability data.

Bio: Dr. Steven J. Thomson is a Research Agricultural Engineer with USDA-ARS in Stoneville, Miss. A Reverse Venture Atomization ChamberBy Russ Stocker

Spray drift is one of the most significant issues facing aerial applicators. Material not applied to the target is a financial loss for the farmer and a potential liability for the applicator. Off-site drift also represents an environmental liability, particularly as habitat, water quality and urban encroachment concerns demand greater attention to larger buffer and/or no-spray zones. During conventional aerial applications, fluid leaving the nozzle is subjected to air shear resulting in an atomization profile (bell curve) with a portion of very small droplets (driftable fines). Increased airspeeds produce more driftable fines, increasing the potential for undesired off-site movement. Controlling the environment where atomization occurs reduces driftable fine production thereby reducing the potential undesired off-site movement of spray material. Control of the nozzle environment is accomplished using the Reverse Venturi Atomization Chamber (RVA). The RVA has three sections. Air enters the first section (diffuser), with a restricted opening, and flows into a larger area (settling chamber) where air velocities

among the treatments will be discussed.Bio: Dr. Scott Bretthauer is an Extension

Using Photography to Aid in Analyzing Airplane Spray Patterns at Operation S.A.F.E. Workshopsby Robert Wolf, S. Bretthauer and P. Newby

The use of photography to aid in analyzing airplane spray patterns at Operation S.A.F.E. workshops is not a new concept. However, with the advent of digital cameras and additional technologies to make the images readily available for review at the workshops, this technique is gaining popularity among pilots that attend Operation S.A.F.E. Fly-ins.

Throughout his career, he has conducted research on various aspects of the ecology and control of cotton insect pests. More recently, he has been working with the Areawide Pest Management Research Unit at College Station, Texas, researching aerial application technology for control of various cotton insect pests such as thrips, cotton fleahoppers, bollworms, tobacco budworms, various species of stink bugs and spider mites. The research on each pest has followed three basic areas: bioassays for determining insecticidal toxicity to the various pests, spray table evaluation of deposition parameters conducive to insecticidal efficacy, and field evaluation of aerial application technologies incorporating results from the first two basic areas.

Automating some measurements during Operation S.A.F.E. workshopsby Roberto Barbosa and Y.J. Chiu

Operation S.A.F.E. workshops, commonly known as “fly-ins,” are very helpful to agricultural pilots in “fine tuning” their aircraft. During the fly-in several ancillary measurements are taken, such as aircraft speed, aircraft spray release height, air temperature and relative humidity, wind speed and direction. Most of those measurements are taken by people operating the flight line with the help of some instruments. It is very common in a fly-in not to have people used to take those measurements, or not to have enough people to take note of all measurements. Automation of some of these measurements could improve accuracy and reliability of measurements during the fly-in. In this paper we describe an attempt to automate some of those measurements and the results of our testing.

are reduced, the nozzle is located and where atomization occurs. The atomized spray and air then travel together through the third chamber (constrictor) where they are accelerated to match the aircraft’s air speed. By reducing the air speed where atomization occurs, the atomization profile demonstrated by the RVA system produces fewer fines, resulting in less drift. The RVA chamber has demonstrated up to a 93 percent reduction in fines at 100 mph and 78 percent reduction in fines at 150 mph airspeed in wind tunnel testing. Actual drift testing with the RVA system on the testing aircraft at 150 mph in the field demonstrated a 40 percent reduction in drift at 50 meters downwind compared to a conventional spray system.

Two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch) are important pests on numerous field and horticultural crops in the U.S. and worldwide. Although this mite species has always been a pest on cotton especially in drier areas and more recently in the mid-South areas of the Cotton Belt, limited information is available on efficacy of aerially applied miticides. Bioassay research initiated last year was continued and expanded to include the use of GreenSeeker™ Technology to assess treatment differences when miticides at different rates were applied to mite-infested cotton using the spray table. Mite sampling was also conducted by collecting half leaf samples from the different treatments and counting the number of mites. Treatment rates evaluated for each miticide were 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and all of the lowest recommended rate on the label. Untreated controls included both infested and noninfested cotton. GE Aviation’s Business & General Aviation Turboprops is nearing completion of its certification efforts for its new H80 turboprop engine and continues to grow its services and customer support network.

“2010 has been another year of great progress for the Business & General Aviation Turboprop team,” said Paul Theofan, president and managing executive of GE Aviation’s Business & General Aviation Turboprops. “The new H80 turboprop engine has exceeded 800 shaft horsepower in testing and the specific fuel consumption is better than we anticipated. We have expanded the service and customer support network in North America and are looking to do the same in South America.”

The H80 engine began certification testing in March at the Business & General Aviation Turboprops facility near Prague in the Czech Republic. Five development engines will take part in certification testing. The H80 engine has completed component and accessory functional tests, including testing of the propeller gearbox and the new single-acting prop governor system. The engine hot section validation testing has completed 6,500 cycles. The 150-hour endurance test will happen before the end of 2010. EASA engine certification is anticipated later this year, along with first flight on the Thrush 510 aircraft.

The H80 turboprop engine will power business and general aviation, utility and agriculture aircraft and will

be the first of the new H80 engine family. The H80 engine combines the elegant, robust design of M601 engine with GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a more powerful, fuel-efficient, durable engine compared with the M601 engine, with no recurrent fuel nozzle inspections and no hot section inspection. The H80 engine will also feature an extended service life of 3,600 flight-hours or 6,600 cycles between overhauls, significantly enhanced hot-day takeoff performance and high-altitude cruise speeds. The H80 will provide the option of a single- or dual-acting governor, allowing customers flexibility in propeller selection.

Expanding customer and product support offerings has been an area of focus for GE Aviation.

In the past 12 months, GE

Aviation has integrated

the M601 product into

GE’s 24/7 Customer

Support Call Center.

The Business & General Aviation Turboprops team also signed agreements to expand its customer service and support offerings. Premier Turbines is the Designated Repair

Center in North and South America for M601 and H80 turboprop engines and offers heavy repair services, exchange engines and rentals, line replacement unit (LRU) rotable pools and field service support to current M601 and future H80 customers. Smyrna Air Center near Nashville, Tennessee, Cascade Aircraft Conversions in Washington State, Winnipeg River Aircraft in Manitoba, Canada, and Sky Tractor Supply Company in Hillsboro, North Dakota, are Authorized Service Centers for M601 and H80 engine families and offer comprehensive line maintenance, removals and re-installations of engines and LRUs and engine spares. Extensive engine overhauls will continue to be performed at GE’s Czech facility in Prague.

GE Aviation has launched M601E training courses at its Customer Technical Education Center in

Cincinnati, Ohio. Two sessions have been held in March and October with positive responses from attendees. The Air Transport Authority (ATA) level III course includes classroom and hands-on training for line maintenance mechanics and aircraft operators.

PARMA 713Membership in the Professional Aviation Risk Management Association (PARMA) continues to increase as more and more Air Tractor operators join PARMA to help develop safer operations and reduce their operating costs. Trevor Edwards, PARMA organizer and Attorney-in-Fact reports, “It’s been a good year for new membership. Aerial spraying operators are seeing how PARMA makes sense for them and is here to stay.” Nevada-based PARMA was created in 2007 to provide risk management programs and services for the ag aviation business and to assist operators in implementing “best practices.”

A key benefit of PARMA membership is the PROAIR insurance program, which consists of Professional Aviation Insurance Reciprocal and PROAIR Risk Retention Group, Inc. These two captive insurance businesses provide hull and liability coverage to PARMA members.

PARMA membership grows in 2010The insurance is funded and controlled by PARMA members, who are also the principal insureds. The owners/insureds participate in setting underwriting guidelines, claims and investment decisions.

A key benefit of PARMA

membership is the PROAIR

insurance program.

PARMA also provides other member benefits, such as the Fly Right Safety Data program, a mapping service that identifies aerial obstacles, and the SPOT communication device that pilots can carry while they work.

“This is a proven business model,” says Edwards, “and it’s based on the successful Canadian Applicators

Insurance Reciprocal (CAIR) established by ag operators in Canada more than a decade ago.”

PROAIR Risk Retention Group, Inc. domiciled in the State of Nevada, is structured as a risk retention group. PROAIR RRG insures its members’ liability risks, including chemical (“drift”) and non-chemical third-party liabilities. Since an RRG is organized under federal law, it is considered an authorized insurer by the states in which it is registered. PROAIR RRG is registered in virtually every state where PARMA members reside and operate.

According to Edwards, the advantage of PROAIR is long-term insurance premium stability because PROAIR’S rates aren’t linked to other sectors of aviation, natural disasters, financial markets or other events that can drive up traditional insurance costs.

“PROAIR RRG membership is limited

to low risk Air Tractor operators who recognize their responsibility for safe operations,” says Trevor Edwards. “This factor, by itself, should result in lower losses and provide a major benefit to the entire PROAIR program.”

Aerial spraying service operators are encouraged to visit the PARMA exhibit, (booth 713) fill out a membership application, and receive a quote during the National Agricultural Aviation Convention at the Savannah Convention Center.

Additional information about the Professional Aviation Risk Management Association, and an online membership application can be downloaded at www.flyparma.com. Or, call Trevor Edwards at 1-800-717-7504.

Covington Aircraft Engines

Let the Abbott family take care of your aircraft’s most important part

517

Your plane wouldn’t go very far without a smooth-running, dependable engine. When the need arises, you want to put it in the hands of a company with experience overhauling and repairing engines, almost 40 years of experience, in fact. It would be even better if that company is still run today by the family that began running it in the mid-1970s.

Covington Aircraft, based in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, has been a family-run subsidiary of Abbott Industries since 1972 and various members of the Abbott family are still around to pick up the phone today.

The management team at Covington has more than 100 years of combined aviation experience and still lives by the same four primary tenets the company was founded on: integrity, dependability, quality service and affordability. This year it expanded its hangar space, parts department and assembly space by another 40,000 square feet. This gives the company the ability to have parts readily available and efficiently handle incoming work, which in turn reduces down time for the customer.

Aaron Abbott of Covington Aircraft surmises that much of the company’s core business falls into three categories: corporate aircraft, agricultural and missionary or humanitarian work. Conveniently based near major interstates, the Okmulgee, Oklahoma, airport and Tulsa, Covington Aircraft Engines takes pride in overhauling the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A series

engine, as well as the Pratt & Whitney R-985 and R-1340 aircraft engines. Covington has the ability to quickly come to your location for engine work, or the engine can be shipped to them. Covington even provides the customers with another option: the plane can be flown to them where all the work will be done by highly qualified professionals.

Covington treats your aircraft with respect and fragility. All aircraft and engines in its possession remain in one of its state-of-the-art hangars. “Only qualified personnel will ever move the plane, and only if absolutely necessary will someone enter the aircraft itself,” Abbott says. The company also performs annual inspections, 100-hour inspections and most service-related work on airframes.

This year the company was named a Pratt & Whitney Canada Distributor and Designated Overhaul Facility (DDOF) for the PT6A engine series. “The designation enables us to expand into different markets, but it also allows us the ability to take care of our existing customers in a more effective way,” David Hamilton, Vice President and Operations Manager of Covington’s Turbine Division, says.

“We’re able to have faster turnaround times on warranty issues because Pratt & Whitney Canada has empowered us to make some warranty decisions without having to involve them, which in turn allows us to make the decisions quicker and get the engines back in the air.” “Customers trust us more when Pratt & Whitney trusts us,” Abbott adds. Every step of the way, a Covington representative is in contact with the aircraft owner, informing them of diagnostics, steps needed to be taken, how long repairs will take, costs and so on.

Private operators receive the same devotion as large companies. As the company’s website states, “We have grown our business one aircraft, one customer at a time and we are not just after the quick sale. We’re after your patronage and a relationship that addresses more than just the engine at the end of the day.” It continues, “Looking out for our customer’s best interests doesn’t mean we want to sell you something. We intend to make you feel appreciated.”

Before any part is used, Covington provides nondestructive testing to verify

the integrity of all critical parts, and uses computer-controlled machinery for necessary adjustments, grinding and balancing. Quality Control Inspectors are on-site to oversee every step of the overhaul, and when the repairs are complete, the engine is run through Covington’s Pratt & Whitney Canada correlated test cell to ensure all performance parameters are met.

Whether you’re one of the self-perceived little guys with one plane, or a director of maintenance with many planes under your guardianship, Covington Aircraft has the years of experience and the down-home Southwestern demeanor to work amiably and attentively with you and on your aircraft. You’ll never feel like the little guy lost in the shuffle, nor the big guy that’s more a number than a name. There is always someone there to talk with you and work within your budget as you overhaul one of the most necessary components of your aviation investment.
